Doesn't sound like the worst Scumbob episode, but wow, that ending is such a downer :/ Nevermind the future sequence where we know everyone's dead; the fact alone that Spongebob has to return to his home only to find everything gone is unsettlingly dark for a Spongebob episode.
@ArchenOpteryx9 жыл бұрын
One thing to point out is that some sponge species live a very long time, so in a way the ending does make sense. Not that I think the writers were actually trying to acknowledge that or that it would have been a good way of doing it if they were.

kitkatcutie520 Even worse, there is the horrifying possibility of this episode taking place after the movie (Plankton broke out and destroyed the Krusty Krab 2?) meaning that this episode is the very dark ending to the series. That's definitely not the actual case though.

This episode actually kind of scared me the first time I saw it. It's not like I was young when I saw it; no, I saw it rather recently. That ending scared me more than some horror movies have. Not only is it creepy, disturbing (at least to me) and not funny, it's also really badly written. The plot is based on an absolute contrivance, and they had SO many missed oppertunities that maybe the target audience would understand. It's okay for a show to have jokes that cater to an older audience, or pure dry humor episodes, but adding in other jokes, or at least some jokes at all would have been nice. To clarify what I mean by creepy, only 5 five episodes or times when Spongebob has actually scared me, besides the obvious in question. They were Demolition Doofus (obviously), Squid's Visit (same as before), One Course Meal (do I need to explain) Gary Come Home (the scenes with Spongebob alone in his house) and Squidbob TentaclePants (dem faces tho). The same problem with all of them is that they try to show really dark situations in a *cough* "kids show". Murder, stalking, suicide, insanity, body morphs, and now depression caused by assumed apocolypse. What is this, a YA dystopian novel with sea creatures?

The view that a dark/serious story cannot be done in a comedy and makes an episode automatically bad _annoys me so much_. It CAN be done, it CAN be good, it's not automatically terrible. While most of the episodes you listed are pretty bad, I liked Have You Seen This Snail? and a few other episodes in this along with other shows that did this sort of thing. Spongehenge IS indeed bad, though. (Love your icon by the way)

I'm not necessarily defending the episode as a whole, but if you want to get REALLY technical, ocean currents are kind of like the underwater version of wind. They follow the same rules and flow the same way as wind currents, just that one is a gas and the other is liquid. I guess Scumbob's holes could be whistling in the...ocean currents, but that doesn't sound NEARLY as memorable, does it?

Look. This is an old video, I wasn't as good as explaining myself. Here is the bottom line: This "wind" is critical to the entire episode. Without it, the plot would not work. All I'm asking for is a joke or reference to the fact that it's unusual. They have made countless jokes about fire underwater, and given a silly explanation that the water is really goo. All those things you mentioned were also included from the very start of the show and while there has been wind before, it's never been like this. Just because the show is weird and the logic is different from ours, doesn't mean it has no logic. An episode that's nothing but a black screen would be illogical, but it would also make for a really boring 11 minutes. Just a simple acknowledgement of how weird the "wind underwater" is or a quick explanation that it's a current is all I'm asking for. Or make the episode actually entertaining and funny and I would have been so distracted I never would have thought of how weird it was in the first place.

Ok so I have kind of a dark theory about this episode. Since sponges can live for a long amount of time, maybe by the time spongebob got back to the Krusty krab, it was already a post apocalyptic world. Because spongebob was so clearly devastated, maybe he killed himself and his spirit inhabited the sponge henges (hence his laugh through the stone sculptures at the very end)

You're crazy, this episode is great. I'm not going to give my reasoning though because you already gave it. The difference being that's what I think makes it good. Even as a kid (not super young, like 7), I found this episode really enjoyable and weird to watch. I laughed at the Krusty Krab being buried because I understood this was a one-off. This was not permanent. I learned later it was a planet of the apes reference, but I found this episode entertaining regardless. I still do. I don't find this episode laugh out loud funny, but neither is SB-129. That's not required for a good episode.

As a kid I never understood that ending with Spongebob meant by "how long was I gone?", those aliens that came at the end because of how random it was. One thing Ive always questioned this episode is how the hell are the winds going for that long. Because from what you say in your video "fishmanity is gone" or something. It just doesnt make any sense. Even the references dont make sense. I dont really see anything to hate about the episode, just its really "mysterious" due to its confusing ending with spongebob and that strange part of him going crazy talking to the statues.

I love how you're asking for sense in a show about a talking sponge who has a job, friends, and who goes on wacky andventures. Yeah all that, perfectly sensical, but underwater wind? Thats nonsense! Also, there is an underwater river, I think your whole tyrade about underwater wind is more than ridiculous.

I think this episode actually executed what it wanted to do pretty well. as a kid this left a lingering fear in me when the gross out stuff didn't really affect me because I was too young to understand it. Now I will agree that it comes out of nowhere for what you expect from spongebob, but on the other hand, that's what made it resonate with me. If this was a story I went in expecting to be so depressing I probably wouldn't have been so surprised at it back then

In I’m with Stupid, Patrick is just desperate to please his parents well what was thought to be his parents. Overall I don’t think he wanted to be mean-spirited, he just wants to please them because he had a rough background and tries to do everything to please them but keeps failing over and over again, and is looked down upon over and over. So I know that he never wanted to be mean-spirited, he just thought that desperate times calls for desperate measures. So I can forgive him for that. In Rule of Dumb, he just had a power trip, despite the fact that he wasn’t supposed to have the title of royalty in the first place, but he didn’t know that yet. The title of royalty got to his head and started to become a jerk, also at least he knows that what he was doing is wrong, so wanted to give up his royalty title because he didn’t want it to control him. So I can forgive him for that. Overall, I think it isn’t Patrick, Tibbit or any of the new writers to blame, it is Viacom at fault, for treating kids like sheep and not caring about quality, at least Hillenburg came back and the show became great again until he died, and Jerky Patrick started to disappear. So thank goodness for jerky Patrick vanishing. Now they’ll have to create episodes with Tibbit in charge again, but I hope Hillenburg taught them how to make a high-quality episode.

Interesting to see what episode made you give up on SB. Honestly, I stopped watching after season 4 because I was growing up and becoming more interested in other shows, but one day I had the misfortune of seeing A Pal For Gary on TV and thought, this is what SpongeBob has become now?
@Otakupatriot1178 жыл бұрын
I think I've mentioned this before on another of your videos, but the episode where Spongebob becomes a lifeguard is another episode based entirely around something that's impossible underwater and usually just a gag, it was just done much better. Overall, it's the quality of the writing that really matters, they've proven that they can make a Spongebob episode out of almost anything. Even one of the newer episodes was nothing but Spongebob trying to clean a plate, but it was actually pretty entertaining.

I really liked this episode. I thought it was very funny. I didn't have any problem with the whole "wind under water" thing since I suspend all disbelief while watching Sponge/Scumbob. I liked the "whistling holes" and how Spongebob made different sounds based on how he contorted because it reminded me of fun edutainment games as a kid. I liked the music because it was, well, auditorilally pleasing. I thought the Mr. Krabs bit of "I'll never understand you boy" was great strait man and spoke to me on a personal level since there were many times I thought I was making perfect sense but the person I was talking to says "I have literally no idea what you are talking about." Patrick watching TV and being an idiot was well timed stupid humor (the kind of stupid humor I enjoy, almost internet flash cartoon level). The surreal aspect of Spongebob making a stone copy of himself and trying to distract the jellyfish was surreal in all the right ways. Before Spongebob decides to make all these giant stone spongebobs, he says a monologue to the extent of "I need to figure out what makes the proper pitches to create the pleasant sound," some science that interests me as someone who can play an instrument and finds notion of "making an instrument from scratch" very interesting (except drums since that's just hitting stuff). Then how after doing that monologue Spongebob says "eh, guess I just have to make a bunch of them" was unexpected in that Spongebob is no stranger to doing science so having him say "I'll just wing it" nonchalantly was quite funny. While I didn't get the whole Planet of the Apes bit, I thought civilizations being destroyed was funny because I saw it as punishment for "not doing the assignment and doing guess and check" (a lesson I learned many times since I preferred the "guess and check" method as it was more fun than doing the work). Then the "here we are at Spongehenge, we don't know why it exists..." was hilarious because my dad is always saying "here we are at Stonehenge, we don't know what it is or why it is here, but it is interesting none the less" and the fish basically made the same unknown reference my dad makes all the time (I don't think he knows where it's from, he just likes saying it). Basically, you talk about them like they're bad things.

SerabiiBot Atlantis Squarepantis I think the problem with it is what they didn't do. Yeah, they shouldn't have made it a musical but for such a long special, they missed out so much. It's not so much what they did wrong, for me, it's what they didn't do right. There are some worse than that, I don't think it's quite the worst.

Want to see Stonehenge? Watch a documentary. The plot of the episode is all over the place, barely any humor, and the episode cane out of absolutely nowhere! I can say it has very good dialogue, though. It might not be the worst, but it sure as hell isn't the best.

The ending of this episode is supposed to be a parody of the original ending of a movie called Army of Darkness Universal cut that ending yet decided to make a similar version of that ending here. Logical decision

Don't know if this helps but TV tropes says that the ending is a reference to Planet of the Apes.
@MrTrollio501710 жыл бұрын
Look man, I respect everyone's opinion, but what I gathered from that entire rant, you basically said when you watch a cartoon, you want to see logic in every bit of the episode. Cartoons essencially don't have logic so you should probably stop watching cartoons altogether if you only watch them for comedy relating to real world physics

AceMC See, the problem with this episode is that we don't know if we are supposed to follow a comedic logic or a spooky logic. Is this supposed to be funny or freaky? I dunno, and the audience doesn't know because the writers did a horrible job of establishing the tone we are supposed to follow. You know how modern Spongebob utilizes a lot of filler because the writers don't do a good job of planning out their episodes? See, in any screenplay that you write, you have to think of the basic outline of a Three act structure and in this episode the first act is what killed the episode's potential to begin with.
