Are you tired of people calling you “spot”? Well then maybe you have Tinea versicolor. It’s one of the most common rashes caused by fungal infections, and it’s easily recognized by it’s characteristic appearance of spots on the upper back and chest that look like swiss cheese. It’s very easy to cure but so hard to prevent from recurring, unless you know how to treat one special part of your body that doesn’t even have the rash.
Tinea versicolor, also called Pityriasis versicolor, may sound like an exotic disease but it’s caused by a very common yeast called Malassezia globosa… I know, it was right on the tip of your tongue!... And it occurs most commonly in young adults and adolescents in warm, humid weather. The rash is usually confined to the upper body: chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. The spots tend to be smaller than a dime or a centimeter, and are hyperpigmented in lighter skinned people… and lighter than your skin color in people with dark skin tones. Usually there are no symptoms, not even itching… just spots! If you look real close you may even see fine flaking at the edges of the spots.
Because the yeast only lives in the most superficial layers of dead skin cells, it’s easily treated with shampoo containing yeast fighting chemicals, like over the counter selenium sulfide and prescription ketoconizole. While treating with a shampoo is easy and efficient, because you just spread the lather everywhere from your neck to your waste, you need to be patient and leave the lather on for five to ten minutes every day for at least a week. That kills the fungus and thereby prevents spreading and new spots, but it may take months for the spots to disappear and for your skin color to return to normal.
So it’s easy to treat. Right? But annoyingly, it so easily comes back the next time you are in hot humid weather, especially if you sweat a lot. We think that most people carry the yeast or its spores on the hair of their scalp and get re-infected from their own hair. So if you want your Tinea versicolor to stay away, makes sure you treat your scalp hair the same way I described for your body and let your friends call somebody else, “Spot.”

I'm not a doctor but I can tell you if your condition is extensive you must treat it with Anti Fungal capsules for around 7 days or so to make sure that the fungus has been eliminated. Along with this use a shampoo such as the ones the doctor mentions but you may have to do this for up to 3 months or so. If the condition is extensive it can take more than 6 months for the patches to go away.

I have tried antifungal lotions and Tea Tree oil skin ointments, how do i know these are working? I have it on my wrists and forearms, my forehead and some on my face, would it be better to take pills to treat this? Mine are large white spots on my arms and small ones on the back of my hands.

How can you tell whether or not it is tinea versicolor versus seborrheic dermatitis? I feel that I've had it for years but that it has gotten worse on my face. The area will not tan and I sometimes have peeling skin on my nostrils. Will 1% ketaconazole work or do I need the prescription strength since it is all over my body and face?

I am not sure what seborrheic dermatitis is. My dermatologist told me I had peri-oral and peri-nasal dermatitis and that there is also peri-ocular dermatis. He prescribed metronidazol gel and it made it worse. I read that you can't use cortisone type medicine on it either because it will make it worse. There are videos on KZbin about it. I was wondering what you thought about it, because apparently there aren't many drs who really have an answer. A lot of women use home remedies to try to treat it.

NO it's not. Neither, versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis nor peri-oral dermatitis are contagious. I say all 3 of these specifically because it seems like that anyone who has 1 or 2 tends to have all 3. I've had all 3 at one time & it's a PAIN IN THE ASS to get rid of. Because the med's for one can irritate or inflame the other & peri-oral is extremely sensitive to topical steroids which are sometimes given for seborrheic dermatitis to control the redness & itching.

This got rid od it for me!!! Im not sure if i had this or Pityriasis Rosea but I dealt with it for over 3 years. I had it on my back shoulders and under my breast. it was itchy and when i was hot or if i was sweating it would make it so much worse. I tried all kinds of fungal creams and body washes nothing worked. Until I discovered Zeolite. Theyre pills i took for a few months and it completely got rid of it. I couldn't believe how well it worked its a life changer for me. Please just do yourself a favor and try it. The brand i tried was Health Force ZeoForce.
