Hi there azure rathalos and pink rathian were literally spray painted versions of their originals to me only difference was the hp value when I was transitioning from low to high rank monsters for the first time as this was my first MH game too

Funny how we went from Subspecies like Pink Rathian, Azure Rathalos and Black Diablos in base World to Subspecies like Fulgur Anjanath, Ebony Odogaron and Coral Pukei Pukei in Iceborne. You can very clearly tell which Subspecies were "born" in the early Monster Hunter games and which ones came in the 5th Generation.^^

I think what Josh forgets when he lists the Sunbreak subspieces is Cotton, since Pink Rathian had been exposed to Iceborne, GU and Rise, giving him a greater appreciation of how subspieces can be different and not just a colour swap with slight move variation. Unlike Gold Rathian (not a subspieces, this is just an example), who changes drastically, Pink Rathain really is just... PINK Rathian.

I'll be honest I'm with cotton on the whole subspecies concept. There are just too many monster hunter subspecies that are nothing more than a monster who decided to dye its scales and/or fur. It just feels really lacking when they make a monster a different color and enhance SOME of its attacks, rather than giving the monster new attacks to go with the color change. I much prefer the subspecies/variants that have attacks and appearances that differ from the original because it lives in a different environment or wields a different element and had to adapt its appearance and attacks in order to biologically do so.

I wonder how they could better differentiate the older generation Subspecies that weren't that different from the original Monster in future games. Maybe Pink Rathian could have an entirely different style of charging and tail-flipping while normal Rathian keeps the usual style.

I have to agree with Cotton. When I heard about the special investigation that lead to Pink Rathian in World, I was really expecting Espinas to appear, which would have made sense that people confused a Rathian or a Rathalos with it. I’m glad Rise gave us Espinas, but a fight in World would have been so awesome, and it would have made itself at home in the Ancient Forest, blending in the the green surroundings.

i want another world game so badly, rise just wasn't it man. it makes such a difference when you can use the world around you like dropping rocks/bones on them or tripping them on giant mushrooms they get stuck in. its just a better system than usable animals like in rise walking around but i would gladly accept environmental hazards that cause blights on the monsters in a future game. There is just something very Tarzan about finding natural traps in the environment to aid you in the fight, it feels really good

Hatred of Uragaan is *absolutely* appropriate, in all places and at all times. *Easily* my most hated monster. (Well, except maybe vespoids…)

But even you have two non Wyvernridable Monsters in the same zone in Rise one will leave rather sooner then later. Even if both are enraged one of them will leave pretty quick. I still haven't used a single Dungbomb in almost 600 hours of Rise/Sunbreak where as I have already fired like 20 in my new World save. And I am not even in High Rank yet.

Ok, but like, Cotton, Pink Rathian is, at least conceptually, interesting levels of different to regular Rathian, smarter AI, 2 additional attacks, more aggressive, and its specifically meant to punish the aggressive playstyle that works against regular Rathian unfortunately none of that matters because people play more reactionary anyway so it doesnt end up feeling anything more than just Rathian but pink

Yeah, normal subspecies (most of them) are sorta whatever as monsters. Besides a few, a lot of them sorta feel the same to the original.

I think subspecies are basiquelly meant to be a cost effective way to pad out the monsters, so assuming that they could be replaced by a whole new monster is just silly. I do find that some of them dont do nearly enough to differentiate themselves through. Base world especially completely wasted the concept by only having pink rathian, azure rathalos and black diablos. if the fight is going to feel the exact same, may as well just save the resources and not make them at all.
