Erin, because of you I decide to try and save two bananas last year, a large one and a quite small one. I almost internally combusted getting the big one out of it's container on my own, but we all survived, including the container. I kept reminding myself it was expensive to replace if I WWE'd it onto the concrete. But I was 100% done after that, so I just cut the roots and leaves off of everything and tossed them into a dark corner of my unheated upstairs (very old farmhouse) and wished them luck. Went up last week to get them and they were both growing new leaves all on their own. Now they're in pots in the seedling room and growing happily. Thanks for helping me have my own Banana AdventureTime 🍌

I'm envious of your Virginia Bluebells. I planted 4 roots this spring and nothing has come up yet. I think they are so pretty. I do have a patch of Solomon Seal. One plant I did not plant appeared about 4 years ago and now there is a patch of about 15 plants. I'm delighted with it. My daffs are done. I gave up on tulips. The squirrels demolish them. All I have blooming right now is heuchera and brunnera. Primrose would be lovely. I'll have to look for some. My mom used to have them in her garden. What she called them in Ukrainian would translate as "God's little hands". I wonder how that name came about. I enjoy your walk-abouts. It's like visiting a friend in their garden.

Funny thing for me about Solomon’s seal. Someone must have shared divisions of it around because all my new neighbours and me have it in their yards. It looks like it has taken over some of them. I don’t like it and I tried to dig mine out, but the crown was so fibrous I could not get a shovel into it - so I covered it with 1/2 a cubic yard of crummy soil from a local landscape supply company and every time I see stalks coming up and I hack at the crown with a shovel. Seems to be working; we’ll see what it does next year!

The wild species tulips, bloodroot, jack in the pulpit, and the big beautiful skunk cabbage! I would love to try to thin our forest area so that it allowed more light in summer and possibly figure out how it could retain more moisture to grow some of these native plants! The plant at 21:30 looks like Cardamine bulbosa (Spring Cress), a native plant to the upper Midwest. It also might be C. douglassii (I can't see the leaves clearly). There are a few 'nativars' that are sold retail - 'Fairy Lights' and 'Snow Showers' from Plant Delights, but this looks like it could just be the species. I wish I could grow the native bluebells -- we're too high and dry on the esker. My Dad taught us the way to a girl's heart was through pancakes. I'm glad Mr. Much More Patient went to get that sorted for Sunday morning!

This is too funny-you have surprise tulips and so do I this year and I never planted them that I recall and They are Yellow! Then you were discussing the dead branch on the pear and we both went “Hmm” at the same time😂. I was wondering if it’s sunscald and would benefit from a scrap of burlap in that area over the winter. I learned the hard way when my Autumn Blaze 20’ maple got a frost crack-it killed it. The bark wasn’t thick enough yet. Since then I trained a sucker out of that same root system and it surpassed a 10’ new maple in one year. I was pretty bummed because as we age it takes a long time to see trees and what we have are all native oak and cedars=boring. Well we didn’t get all the heavy rain north of Madison, but you got it. I’m really happy we pulled out of severe drought and now abnormally dry level. We have Green Grass!🎉. The rain is later than expected and the chickens keep going in and out so I know when it’s pizzling out. Wanted to get much more transplanting done of veg and flowers and will need to wait. So today I will separate doubled tomato seedlings. You haven’t been in severe drought by Milwaukee and I’m not sure if it was the warm winter and/or the rain, but I’m seeing a lot of happy surprises that either wintered over or magically appeared like the tulips or the coneflower and columbine in the veg bed. I had artichokes overwinter!🤩 It almost seems unbelievable and feels this will be a grand year of gardening!👩🌾 You sound as discouraged about lily of the valley as I do about plantain hostas-What a weed! That creeping sedum called Steppables that I warned about spreading throughout the grass I recently found it is called stonecrop and they actually SELL the seed for it!🤦♀️. I can hear the rain on the metal roof and it’s pure joy! 🥰 Thanks for the rainy Sunday tour! It’s nice to see new plants that can be grown in my area.

Question for you: I live in Janesville, WI and so far I have found 3 ticks crawling on me this week after I came inside from doing brief jobs. Do you spray yourself for ticks, each and every time that you walk through your garden or work in it? I have gone 25 years straight without seeing a single tick before this week!!! And, yes, we have deer walking through out property, but they always have. Thanks! Love your episodes!!!🥰
@dustyflats38327 ай бұрын
We’ve been watching for ticks also north of Madison-none yet. With warmer winters we will be seeing other ticks not normally in this state. I’m hoping the roosters help out. All animals and rodents can carry them into the yard. I have so much fencing it looks like a zoo here😂.

I need the room in the greenhouse and some of those plants are screaming their shoes are too tight😅. Because of the warmer than usual winter I have discovered so many surprises like artichokes and carnations! I think it’s going to be a great year for garden as the rain is returning. The only thing about the warmer temps is if it fools the fruit and freezes-not good.

I adopted a second dog on Friday and took her back this morning, Sunday. She will be someone’s wonderful dog. I had a moment where I thought how great would it be to have two dogs! My border collie/GSP is 2.5 yrs old, she really warmed up to the puppy…but I had to keep the puppy corraled away because she had kennel cough….but our Molly was wanting to play, gave her lots of time to smell another dog. The adoption place said she was a border collie mix…but the app animal indentifier said she’s an English Pointer/Dalmatian mix….that’s an even more bouncy dog, and from the size of her paws she could be bigger than our dog. An adult female range is 44lb-66lbs….and they’re jumpers. 😳so she would probably clear the corral i built that holds my dog out of my planting beds. I slept on the floor with this puppy, I cried as we drove, I couldn’t talk once we got there…I wanted to keep her, but the best thing is to return her so she could find a good forever home. I’d forgotten how tough it is to have a puppy, my 2.5 yr old takes coordination trying to exercise her daily…how was I going to do this? I feel such guilt adopting and then returning her so quick, but I know at my age I’m no longer able to do this…She wasn’t potty trained, i managed in those few hours to have 3 poos and several pees in the yard, she did get out of the shelter for 2 days, saw sunshine….she and her litermates were left by the side of a highway, they’ve all been adopted, so now she’s back alone in the shelter, i’m so sad, can’t stop crying…. Erin your humor is just what I needed this morning. 😢
