the answer in full: Mr Birling in Act One of An Inspector Calls during his conversation with Gerald and Eric, displays patriarchal qualities. He believes that as a rich, capitalist man, he is extremely powerful, if not untouchable. This comes to light when Mr Birling explains how the Titanic is "unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable". The use of symbolism displays the power of Mr Birling, because this ship was no ordinary ship, it symbolised wealth, capitalism and progress; everything which makes Mr Birling powerful. Therefore, it appears that like the ship, Mr Birling also believes, his power can never be touched, can never sink. Furthermore, the repetition of "unsinkable" displays how certain Mr Birling is in his beliefs. He says it twice, almost back-to-back, which signifies a sense of emphasis, for him, this ship represents everything he believes. As a result, Mr Birling makes himself synonymous with the ship. If the ship cannot be defeated, neither can he.

when you say you show the examiner your knowledge of the play as you state 'in act 1' , could that be replaced without the act and scene number like Before the inspector arrives, Mr Birling ... or At the start of the play, Mr Birling ...

You dont need to include context every paragraph. Just a few times in the entire thing should be adequate (excluding 'sprinkling' AO3 references in, you should do that where possible).

I dont know how to write a perfect introduction but all you have to do is summarise your main points into kinda one whole. So that everytime u write a new paragraph it helps you link back to your main original point and acts as a guide so you don't start talking about random things and itt ensures that all your points in your paragraphs are interlinked. But it only needs to be 2-3 sentences and you don't even need to write one necessarily but it can help you :)

Just to let everyone know since 2017 the only characters that haven't come up is the Inspector and Gerald so I would advise you to revise both of them as normally you can pick between 2 questions one is normally a character question and one is usually a theme question.
