I totally understand how you feel about Devin and his music. I've been a fan for almost 20 years, and I'm still blown away by him... I love all sorts of music, but there's nothing else out there like him. Dude is a genius.

Same here. I discovered him about 7 years ago, and there is something simply magical about his music. I'm in my mid 40s now, but his music gives me the same feeling of wonder I had as a teenager.

Devin Townsend is a force of nature. He can not be kept down. He operates on a level regular mortals don't comprehend. He had to get three top-level drummers for this song (and album...) because there wasn't one drummer that could keep up with where he had to go. Think about that for a moment. When things get back to "normal", go see Devin Townsend live.

Ya know, a month ago, I woulda looked at that “regular mortals don’t comprehend” comment without hearing any Devin Townsend, and said that was the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, and now I’m like, “well yeah, obviously “

Thank you. I think you underestimate the value in being able to sit and watch someone listen to loved music and see a genuine reaction - I don't know many people I could force them to listen to half an hour of Devin Townsend in real life.thanks again.

I needed this in my life today - Thanks Smitty You taking the time to actively listen to a 23 minute Devin Townsend opus, is not boring. I really appreciate that you pause the music when you talk as well. This is one of his finest pieces, and you can hear small parts of the other album tracks sprinkled in - and it makes for a subtle theme to tie this monster together Cheers!!

Dude…. You’ve gone in the deep end with this one!!!! I haven’t got time to watch now but can’t wait to catch up later. Incredible piece of music. A lot of reviews and fans alike hold this up along side the huge Prog epics of the past like 2112, like Close To The Edge, like Tarkus etc…..

I've been listening to him for about ten years. You might want to check out his other project, Casualties of Cool. It's where he did some of his experimenting for Empath. His song "Mountaintop" feels like a mix of country music and blues

I haven’t gone through all the comments…In response to your comment about his space themes and sounds, his first real inspiring moment with music was with two things, the first Star Wars, specifically because he loved how the “good guys” and the “bad guys” had their own themes, the good being light, and the bad being dark, and then of course the Cantina scene with the jazzy music! You can tell Devin does that in his music…and also from the movie The Dark Crystal! Also, you probably know by now cause this is a year old, but Steve Vai makes an appearance on this track! And I agree with you 100%, Devin is my Spirit animal too! Just a genuinely nice dude too!

Devin often releases some extra demo tracks with his albums that are totally worth checking out when you have a chance. I love the Empath demos in particular.

That last song "Here Comes the Sun!" is one of my favorite Devin songs... so powerful! There's a playthrough by Anup Sastry (the session drummer) on KZbin and you can see how strong of a drummer he is. Also, Steve Vai did the guitar solo :)

Fab to see that Devin has managed to "consume" you in such a positive way ;) There's a video track to the Empath DVD incidentally (and also a 5.1 surround track) which I find is a great addition to the listening experience! Nothing like a live show though - fortunately he's back here in the UK 8 week's from now at the Royal Albert Hall again. Sadly it won't be being recorded though! Enjoy your journey in the meantime :)

I would just like to say that Devin is not a stoner. HOWEVER! He used to be a BIG stoner during Infinity, to the point where it was a problem.

Devin was a stoner, now he's just high on life ;) He's very open about his use and how it impacted him. Here's an old video on the subject. Also, he's talked about it in his podcasts. I think probably the Infinity one most? Not entirely sure kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3O2l4qMlKyLoac

Interesting that you see him as a successor to Metallica. I see him as the next Frank Zappa because his main driver is intent of portrayal with all his inner thoughts and feelings.

Yeah, this is one of those "George Lucas" songs from Devin. By that, I mean that his approach isn't meant to be accepted, or perhaps even understood, on a surface level. In the same way that Lucas focuses more on the tone of dialogue, rather than how naturally it's conveyed, Devin chooses tone over fully integrating each section of music here, because he's trying to tell an emotional story and prefers that the listener feel a certain way at each different point in the tale. So, it's understandable if the song in its entirety doesn't gel with someone, because a person more than likely either needs to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it (even if that's just not caring about the composition), or know how it's meant to be received from the start.
