Farmers looking to incorporate cover crops into rotation are often left with the issue of terminating the crop. Is spraying enough? If you need to work the ground, what’s the best option?
To tackle that question, Ontario field editor Bern Tobin asks Pat Lynch, agronomist and Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show tillage demo host, about tillage options for cover crop killing.

If incorporating residue increased organic matter, then full tillage farms would have the highest levels.

Imagine not knowing how organic matter gets built 😬

Shallow tillage and incorporation of plant biomass has been beneficial on my farm. Some of the tools shown are too aggressive

What if we could till the residues deeper and deeper with each cover crop, as the organic matter increases in the upper levels.. wouldn't this bring the organic matter and air exchange further down into the soil profile for long term soil health. Why do we want the residue only in the top 3/4 inches if we already have high OM in top layer? I imagined something like a trench that gets filled with residue, kind of like strip till in that you are not turning over the whole soil but only in strips. Make sense?

Tillage is to costly an bad for soil. We need to roll or graze cover crop and NO TILL cash crop in!!! Or STRIP TILL for corn.

The field looks a bit yellow before they start the tilling. Has this been sprayed about a week ago?

So he says that some farmers burn fuel and put hours and wear and tear on the equipment just to have something to do. And will a dealer have a piece of equipment to rent. When your window is open. Because all other farmers in the area have the same window.

Minimum tillage is the better route but efficient use to do the job is a must!!!

I don't see the point of using herbicides ! If the idea is to make the soil better.
