Hold your thumbs..lol. I believe studio soundproofing involves setting the floor onto springs specifically engineered for the weight of the structure above. And attention to detail. with lead walls if possible..😉 The springs sit into wells filled with dense rubber that further dampens any vibration.

For Sound stopping completeness of the building elements is essential, The reason I note this is on your other video there is about a 200x 200mm square break in the bricks where I assume the perlin end is built into the wall. There are different ways materials can resist the passage of sound, mass is the most effective so brick and dense blocks are very effective if complete and sealed (All frequencies). Another way is by not being stiff, so your foam strip idea will act in this manner as a dampener (good for higher frequencies). A better detail would be to not fix the battens to the brick at all and have a 10mm gap with additional insulation behind or alternatively use resilient bars which also act to decouple the board from the wall. Just remember that the whole system is only as good as its weakest point so flanking sound transmission and services need careful consideration!! A perfect wall just needs one small hole and its effectiveness drops to near zero. Sound block plasterboard is heavier and denser than standard and would help. If you want to match the noise reduction of a properly built modern masonry party wall you would require a build up like the following: Skim 3mm 12.5mm sound block Plasterboard (fixed using construction spray adhesive and all joints filled with acoustic caulk) 3 to 5mm High density, polymer based, soundproofing rubber sheet (fixed using construction spray adhesive) 12.5mm sound block Plasterboard (Screw fixed and all joints filled with acoustic caulk) 50 - 63mm timber frame free standing with base and head decoupled from floor timbers with strips of High density, polymer based, soundproofing rubber sheet. Void behind to brick wall filled with mineral wool, either batts or roll acoustic if desired. All power outlets would require a plasterboard and rubber sheet back box and any wire runs and joints sealed with acoustic caulking. With the floor deck and ceiling not present I would consider also treating the floor zone, maybe just filling the perimeter with mineral wool batts would help. This will bring you up to between 90 - 120db. The regulations are very weak in this area and the noise reduction levels required were drawn up before Hifi's, sound bars etc were commonplace, a sound (pardon the pun) 9 inch brick wall would already meet the requirements if no holes are present and are not really fit for purpose in the modern age.

Totally hooked to this series Adam. Have binge watched first four episodes tonight. Great work and really well explained. I’m a keen DIYer but have never tried anything this involved before but would love to buy a doer upper at some point in my life and let loose! Just one observation - washers may have been a good idea for those coach bolts through the three timbers? Those nuts looked like they were already eating into the timber. I did like the point about zigzagging the bolts along the timber length - I didn’t do that when I last doubled up timbers but that was only for a cold roof garden room so hopefully structurally still ok.

@MR A BUILDERS forgot to mention those engineered joists go up a lot easier than a steel one. You would have needed a tower crane and the entire roof off to lift and locate. I watched a Grand Designs programme about a house costing £3.5 million that used the same engineered timber joists. If it's good enough for an expensive house, then you've not gone wrong in your calculated choice.

I wouldn't use this stuff for plasterboard. It foams when it first comes out, then very quickly liquefies, almost dissolves into normal looking wood glue. Hi Adam, great detailed video and glad you've got a floor at last. In episode 2 around the 26min mark you were explaining all the problems you were having with sizing the joists. The shorter joists were were 5.07m long but you also mentioned that you had told the company the span was 5.5m. I was wondering how come you had got longer joists at 6.1m ? Was the 5.5m an error on the video ?
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hello Kevin, hope you're well mate and sorry that it has taken so long for me to reply. The 5.5m was a rough measurement that I got just to price with. Then I properly measured it and it was a little shorter. The 6.1m lengths are longer because they go the full width of the house, then they shorten down because they go around the stairs, so there's two different lengths of joist. 9 of one and 10 of the other. Hope that makes sense?
@amazing451 Жыл бұрын
@@Mr_A_Builders That all makes sense and I do appreciate you taking the time to answering it, as I was confused when you mentioned the 5.5m but the joists only measured 5.07m. Can't quite understand why you didn't put the bolts in the other way so no need to cut them all down - they's be in the floor/ceiling void?
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hello Rob, I did explain that but I had to cut it out! The bit I've got isn't deep enough to fasten onto the bolt with so much thread sticking out, so I cut them off for that reason. Thank you for watching and commenting mate, really appreciate it. Have a great evening.

If you can, build the soundproof wall separate from your party wall. Even a 10mm gap between the two walls will make a difference. I did this when ripping my own home to bits.

Great video :) Been house bashing all day and then come and watch some else do it, what the hell is wrong with me! Was their a saving not using old school floor joists?
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Haha! If there's something wrong with you then there's something extremely, worryingly wrong with me! I should have mentioned the cost of the joists in the video, sorry mate. They were £2600 all in. Not a saving but they are the only ones that could've done the job so it is what it is. Thank you for watching mate.

What's the difference between underground pipe and coloured pipe for svp? I always thought the underground stuff doesn't like the uv light and goes brittle but other stuff would do for anything
@Brown969 Жыл бұрын
Underground is supposed to be thicker, but you are correct that it goes brittle when exposed to sunlight. I believe the thicker bit isn't because soil will crush it, but instead it provides some resistance to shovels or accidental damage 🤷♂️

Well Brad I have to congratulate your hair and makeup team for doing such a great job of hiding the real you. Your stunt double is a dead ringer and it’s hard to tell the difference between the one in front of the camera versus the one doing the work. You didn’t show us the catering caravan assume it’s similar to the one the BBC uses on the big build. I admire you all, super job and a lesson to us all for going that extra mile. Enjoying the series immensely. Regards Mike 😅
