Cracking The Cryptic

Күн бұрын

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
The plaudits for this sudoku have been stellar even though it's only just been released. It's called Post Office Panic and it's the work of tesseralis. This is a weird and wonderful puzzle with some bonkers logic!! Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Cells separated by an X must contain digits summing to 10. Clues outside the grid indicate the digit which has to be placed in the Nth cell in the corresponding direction, where N is the digit placed in the first cell in that direction. Each letter represents a different digit. The grey table is provided to help you record digits you discover.
** PATREON REWARDS JUST OUT **
We've just released a brand new Sudoku Hunt from Joseph Nehme themed around Equal Sum Lines! With 13 puzzles in all, this is just a wonderful collection of puzzles. Do have a go if you can.

I think it says a lot about the types of puzzles Simon solves that _"The Sudoku With No Digits At All"_ doesn't really narrow it down.

Thanks for featuring my puzzle! Solved with aplomb, as always ^_^. The idea came since, like you, I noticed that numbered rooms was getting popular on the discord. For some reason, the first thought I had was "I wonder if I can make one without any concrete numbers" since, as the video title says, we all love puzzles without any given digits, even if they're on the outside of the grid. From there, I played around with the configurations and tried to see how far I could get, and I think it turned out well. Regarding the solve, the more formal way to prove A wasn't 4 or 6 is: if it was 4 or 6, then one of the clues at the bottom would be the other of 4 and 6, aka 10-A. But as you said, we already clued 10-A in box 8, which breaks the puzzle! Definitely the most subtle and hardest step of the puzzle but one I'm pretty proud of and I think is elegant.

Yeah, especially when he whittled E down to either 2 or 7, I thought Simon _had_ to eventually spot the E and 2 rubbing pointy shoulders in box 8. But I was underestimating Simon's natural talent for finding Alternative Paths, as it were ;-)

It's so interesting to see Simon struggle so much with indexes and the actual values. For my job I work with arrays (and other indexed collection variables) all day every day, and the only hurdle was remembering that the letters outside the grid are the values being indexed and not the index itself. So I suppose being a software developer really makes these puzzles easier to understand.

Simon (pointing at the E in r8c5) at around 1:00:25 "I could have got E ages ago...": indeed, maybe longer than he thought, it had been there for about 10 minutes - since the moment the possible values for E had been reduced to 2 or 7 by the 46 pair in r6c19, it had to be a 7 because of the 2 in r9c5.

Simply brainbusting stuff, I had a great time watching your solve Simon. Kudos to tesseralis for a great piece! All the novel stuff I can really offer from myself is that, at 21:30, I deduced the 9 in R9C1 differently. We know that the cells in C1+C9 add up to 90. We also know R2C1+R2C9=10, R3C1+R3C9=10, etc. for 7 lots of 10. Therefore, we find that removing these cells (sum 70) from C1+C9 (sum 90) gives us that the puzzle corners add up to 20, and so the R9C1 is 9 as we already have the other three corners.
@videogamersEU

I did not use math. Just because 1 was taken in C9, it 9 had to be one with the number already fixed in C9. And R9 was the only place in C1.

I was yelling at my screen for 13 minutes until it was penciled in at 54:00, and the kicker is, Simon used logic regarding F to solve for E, not realizing that E could have been solved long before F. At 37:00, the easier way to see that A can't be 6 is by looking at the possible positions for E in column 5. You can't put an E into the 6th position because it would be in the center of the two Es to either side of the grid. That logic is available from the moment you figure out that A is even.

Quite a fascinating puzzle. Got the 159 opening without too many problems, and A down to 4 or 8 soon as well, but somehow i didn't see it couldn't be 4 either. Once past that point with help of the video, it solved very nicely. Not exactly breezing through it from then immediately, but definitely with increasing speed and smoothness.

Wow, this took me over two hours, but was determined to finish it. My brain just won't do anything intuitively with numbered rooms, just have to stare and say the logic out loud. Makes it intruiging though.

Don't be too hard [or disappointed] in that 7-8 pair in box5, Simon. [Because he was dismayed a little] I was keeping track of what that X ten sum could be. [It couldn't be a 2x8 because of the 2-8 in col5 -- and it couldn't be a 6×4 because of "C (a 46)" in that row ] And, NOW, it can't be a 7×3 [making it a 1x9]. That's what that did, Simon. So don't be too hard on the 78 . Good job. [And good puzzle -- even though it was a little difficult getting my head around ] I penciled in along the columns [and in that extra grey region]. Wish You would do that sometimes [But you hold things in your head ]. That "78" DETERMINED that "X ten" clue though. CHEERS 😂😎☕☕ [[Edit : @54:05 or so lol]]

I found it harder to follow the small center pencil marks when Simon knew what letter a cell was. I would have expected him to use the large letter and then replace with the number once it was found or to use coloring in the same way he uses it in other puzzles for cells he knows are the same but doesnt know their value.
@RichSmith77

I entered large letters during my solve, when known for a cell, and like you, was at first surprised Simon didn't. But watching the video, I saw there was a definite advantage to the way Simon used centre pencilmarks for letters. For example, when r2c2 became known to be C, and C was 4 or 6, the only way to denote both pieces of information was to use small centre pencilmarks of "46C". Using a large C gave no option to denote 4 or 6 in the cell as well.

@@RichSmith77 It was in those times I especially wished he would use color instead if he wanted to have both. Also that is the whole point of the grey box to the right to track possibilities for letters. He missed that E couldnt be 2 because of box 8 and I am pretty sure he never registered the E center mark afterwards

I'm pretty sure you could eliminate A being 6 by seeing that it would place E in r6c5, but that's not possible, because there's an E clue on either side of r6, so E could never be in c5 in r6, meaning A could never be 6

A very interesting and exciting puzzle. Although I had to delete many things again and again because I kept confusing the position with the value of a letter, I was able to solve it with great enthusiasm. However, it took me twice as long as Simon.
@gobsvensen

I screwed this one up about 3/4 the way through and restarted. Was such a better puzzle the second time when I didn't keep confusing the indexes and the Letter values. Eliminated the A from being 6 the first time, because it puts the E in r6c5 which breaks the row indexing. On the second go, spotted the easy way to eliminate the 4. If A is 4, r9c5 is 6, and the A is forced into either r6c4 or r6c6, both of which would need a 4 to index the 4. This was a brilliant puzzle once the frustrations of confusion stopped and I could actually think things through properly.

took me an hour to figue out the middle column E with the 2'as around it trick. Which made the Bottom E a 2. Without that It was pretty much impossible to move on I think

When I noticed that he pencil marked the E as possibly a 2, with that big 2 right next to it, I just told myself it probably wouldn't matter, because the little stuff that I notice and Simon doesn't rarely matter that much for the solve. But then he kept repeating it could be 2 or 7... no, it can't 😭 lol, this was a great solve, no way I could have done it on my own

37:26 you can figure out much earlier on that A can't be six, because that would put E in box 5 of row 6... Which can't happen because that would require 5 to show up twice in row 6

I, like so many others, will quite often put these videos on when I am struggling to sleep. Sometimes Simon stays so still and so quiet that you think the video is paused. Let me tell you how concerning it was to be on the verge of sleep, in the middle of one of Simon's pauses and just hear "don't know" very softly whispered.... And to then open my eyes and see a statue still Simon for a few seconds before he moved. Scared the absolute bejeezus out of me, I thought I was hearing things 🤦

19:26... With where you are the question now is what can be 5 now? It can no be A,B,C,D,E,F, or G and with knowing I is 9 that therefore makes H 5, that is your next step which then makes the bottom left a 9
