Fitting a sump spacer to our Moto Guzzi Breva 750. All small block Moto Guzzis suffer from a lack of oil capacity. In the case of the 750 Breva, the sump holds just under 1.8 litres. The solution to this is to fit a sump spacer.
The sump spacer used was supplied by HPower.

My mk3 le mans had a sump spacer as standard but also had a longer dipstick therefore holding the same amount of oil as the mk1 le mans. If you used the shorter dipstick, ie increasing the amount of oil in the engine, it would blow out of the breather. I believed the spacer was only used for greater air volume.

Hi Mike, thanks for great videos. Did you use grease on the gaskets when you fitted the sump extension. I did and it weeps oil despite correct fitting and new gaskets etc

No, I've always fitted the sump gaskets without grease.

Hi Mike, thanks for your informative videos. I recently acquired a 2004 Breva 750ie with around 30,000 miles. Do you find that the sump spacer is completely necessary? The manual recommends changing oil every 6,000 miles, which seems very high to me. Would checking the oil at every fill up and changing the oil every 3000 miles be a decent alternative to buying and installing a sump spacer?

Our Breva had done over 100.000 kilometers (around 60,000 miles) before I fitted the spacer so probably not. However the oil quantity in these bikes is rather small so it works hard and can get dangerously low if you don't keep an eye on it. I usually check the oil level every fortnight and change it every 5000 kilometers (around 3000 miles).

Thank you. My only qualm with the sump spacer is that it lowers the ground clearance quite a bit. I'd be much more wary of taking the Breva on a trail, or even on some less well managed roads. I suppose raising the suspension would be a good way to offset this effect, but how feasible is that?

You still have around 4.5" or 120mm of clearance when sitting on the bike so it's not that bad really. Many of the older big block Guzzis such as the Le Mans 1000 & Daytona ran spacers as standard. Going on & off Kerbs is the only real problem I've noticed. But even then it is not an issue if you do it slowly and carefully.

Fantastic instructional! Kind of an off question but how do you go about installing those ngk spark plug caps?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 3 жыл бұрын
The caps have a threaded spike so you simply screw them onto the lead.

@@MikesMachines thanks mate, just got in from installing them. The ones that came off were the factory ones from 2010, figured it’s about time to replace them. Do new caps actually improve anything? At first I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why they weren’t going on after installing them to the leads...after few minutes thought and investigating, the stock Guzzi caps use the bulb end of the spark plug, the new Ngk caps use the threaded area. Quickly got the end covers off and the new caps slid right onto the spark plugs

Hi, what oil temperatures does the Guzzi have with and without a ring?

But with the spacer you decrease the main parameter - the ground clearance. Some bikes (Harley for example) use separate oil tank

The slightly lower ground clearance hasn't been an issue.

Mike, did you fit this because of high oil loss?
@MikesMachines
@MikesMachines 5 жыл бұрын
We fitted it mainly because of the small oil capacity in the sump which means that the oil is worked very hard. Ours does use oil though which is not unusual for the little Guzzis especially as the miles rack up.

The only ones outside Australia that I'm aware of are made by Guzzi Tech in the USA. www.guzzitech.com
