You're great at speaking like a norwegian from Oslo. You hit the accent and dialect almost pitch perfect. There are so many diffrent dialects of norway though. Northern norwegians (nordlenninger) find the oslos sounding too cute aswell and not able to take them seriously when they speak

I'm Norwegian and when I go to Sweeden I understand swedish just fine, but if I speak Norwegian Swedish people just do not understand it so I have to speak English or put in some swedish words. I was in Sweden for 5days at a festival talking to hundreds of different people and I just learned the sweedish words and language while there because it was easyer to get people to understand me. The last day some swedish girls thought I was swedish XD

Your pronounciation is really good, but almost all of the words and phrases that were suggested to you were in dialects that, from my perspective as an Eastern, Oslo-area Norwegian, find more difficult to understand than Swedish :P Come to think of it, I suppose that could be an explanation as to why some of your friends find Norwegian difficult to understand. Danish football player, Nicklas Bendtner signed for the Norwegian club, Rosenborg thinking he wouldn't have any problems communicating. He said in an interview that he had Norwegian friends, and he didn't think he would have any problems with it. Little did he know, that people from Trondheim have a distinctive dialect, and words like "jeg/jag/I" is simply written and pronounced "æ", and "er/är/is" is written and pronounced "e" in Trondheim 😂

So swedish, norwegian, danish, icelandic, would you speak your own languages and understand each other, or english, dutch, icelandic, german?
@Nackagubben8 жыл бұрын
+Clement Ng I personally would speak Swedish with Norwegians and possibly Danish as we could understand each other's languages pretty well. Icelandic and German/Dutch are too far off Swedish and I'd speak English :)
@F0NIX7 жыл бұрын
For me as a Norwegian I also understand Swedish and Danish good. But Icelandic is too far off, I can understand some words. There are off course some dialects in Denmark and Sweden that I have a hard time understanding, well there are actually some dialects in Norway that I have a hard time to understand :D Nackagubben I think you did a fine job, and as you said; you was not given some good sentences to show your norwegian language. It was mostly tongue twisters. It would also be fun to hear you try differnt dialects from Norway: northern part of norway, trønderdialect and some from west of norway. You did try mostly the dialect spoken in the south of Norway in this video...
@Bjowolf27 жыл бұрын
Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are very similar with 80 -90 % the same vocabularies - easily recogniseable words, just spelled slightly differently along fairly predictable lines - and with nearly identical grammars, so essentially they are in many ways just variants or dialects of the same base language. Therefore it's usually fairly easy for Scandinavians to understand the other two languages in writing without too much effort, because the words that we don't have or don't use any longer will still somehow make sense to us or be guessable, as they are often made up from basic familiar bricks. And then are of course some traps with words that don't exist in the other language(s) ( even though they "ought to" ;-) ) or have very different meanings, so they are always cause for much confusion and funny misunderstandings between us, just as probably know it between US and UK English. But in pronounciation they are rather different, so we really have to listen up and focus, when we talk to each others - a bit like a person from the South of England talking to someone from the North or from Scotland. But as long as it isn't any obscure dialects, we can usually manage ;-) Swedes and Norwegians with their melodic intonations typically have an easier time understanding each others at the spoken level than they have with Danes, who don't have a melodic accent, speak more sloppy and typically a good bit faster ( by 30% ! ). At the written level and with respect to vocabulary it's however Danish & Norwegian ( bokmål = book language ) that are more alike of the three for historic reasons ( part of a united kingdom for over 400 years. Icelandic is still fairly close to Old Norse, so we are unfortunately too far apart now to be able to understand it directly apart from a little word, a phrase or occassionally even a small sentence here and there. It's a bit like you trying to decipher Old or Early Middle English ;-) In the written form we can understand a little bit more of Icelandic though - maybe even 20 - 30% on a very good day ;-) - because many simple words can be guessed with a bit of effort, even if we can't catch them on the fly, when we hear them. So we are usually able to get some rough idea what a text in Icelandic is all about. Another reason for these difficulties is that Icelandic has kept its grammatical complexity ( highly inflicted with a full case system, verbs changing acc. to person and number etc. ) along the lines of German and Old English, whereas the Scandinavian languages have given up on a lot of that complexity ( no cases for nouns and their articles, verbs that are the same for everyone, no backward sentences a la German with the verb or verb compound at the end of a sentence ) - very much along parallel lines with modern English ( Middle E and onwards ) - and maybe even due to influences from it?
