An old farmer once told me at an auction that a bull with a short tail is a sign of low fertility

I have also heard that!

I noticed a “high fence” in your video and wondered the reason for what appeared to be a seven or eight foot fence?

It's a game fence. There are some buck on the farm.

The brahman also shivers the skin when jou touch it. I am also interested in whether other breeds can do it.

I haven't seen the Simbra's do it - yet, but I'll be watching them!

Shane, tail length is difficult to assess in young cattle . Nguni cattle which I farm with have thicker and shorter when young. You can only use the tail to indicate Purity in indigenous cattle in mature cattle. I would be wary of dipping cattle in August unless they have mites. The immunity for African redwater only lasts for 8 months so cattle need to be constantly challenged to maintain immunity. So dipping in winter, early spring is questionable, as is the practice of spring burning to reduce tick load

Hey Graham, Thanks for the comments. As I said, tails and tail length is something I only learned about recently but thanks for your input!

I don't plan to dip at all - if possible. I might, however, treat individuals if they show signs of falling out. Once recovered they will be sold as I really don't want animals that can't make it naturally. With regards to dipping in August - this was something a friend of mine mentioned to me. They were advised by a rep to do this and ever since have had such good results that they actually decreased their number of tick treatments. I understand that this is also influenced by the area they are in - also tge type of ticks they struggle with - thus not a blanket approach. But I'm always open to learn and I appreciate your input!

Nguni cattle farmed in colder high altitude areas will develop a winter coat as I think will all indigenous breeds. The coat quality will be determined by the cold/ altitude and nutritional status. Well fed animals will probably remain sleek throughout the year

Good idea! My cattle aren't tame enough to get that close - I keep them a little wild for theft purposes. But thanks for sharing!
