3:07 Me one year ago: there is no way I'm gonna write anything in fantasy. It's too complicated and I can barely manage this one contemporary romance story. Me today: *crying in the corner hugging myself and staring at my computer across the room* one fantasy duology with half a first draft and a spinoff series idea, one premise, two fairytale retelling outlines and a group project. EVERYTHING IS FINE!

I feel you with wanting to write a stand-alone and then having it grow! I had a book idea for a stand-alone and then I had a dream about the ending that brought in a second book and by the time I figured everything out I’m pretty sure it’s a five book series now.

A few years ago, I had that idea of a trilogy. But then I started thinking that my second book villain needed a better backstory. I thought about his old relationships with another characters and his fall and rise and where he came from and how he rose again... in the end I decided to make a book before this one, focused explaining all these things that grew so much. And when I looked at the final book, I saw that the first half was basicly the main characters going hunting an old evil object, and the second half was how they needed to figure out how to destroy it since another person got the object. It was like having two stories in one so... now I've got a five books series. That's amazing xD

Working on book 2 might be a blessing in disguise. You might learn things that need to go into book 1, and in turn, learn things that need to be added to book 2. IIRC, I had shared with you an author's advise of writing the second book before editing/reworking the first book ... then set aside the rough draft of book 2 to finish book 1 ... then move on to book 3, before returning to book 2 ... etc. Leap frogging manuscripts to always have one rough draft to return to to edit/rework once a new rough draft is finished for the next WIP. This may not work for everyone, or every time, but it might be the idea way to deal with a book series ... so that things from the next book (2) in the series can be added to the last book (1) in the series, and then whatever changes this brings about can be added to the next book (2) in the series. Or added to a file for another book in the series, where it might go. (Book 3 or 4 or 5, etc.) And, IIRC, there's an author who works on one project in the morning, and a second project in the evening. It seemed to work for that author, but that doesn't mean it will work for everyone, so I'll just leave it here should anyone like the idea. . . . hmm . . . Or maybe I got that idea from Diana Gabaldon, who will work on a different project if/when she's stuck on her main project. That's how a lot of her novella's came to be. Or even work on different sections of the same book. And, since a series is the same story, finishing the rough drafts of all of the books in the series before editing/reworking the first book in the series, might not be out of line. *shrugs* Good luck, with whatever direction you take on this endeavor.

My story was a short story when I wrote it for a class project and my brain is like "but what if it is not, what if it is a novel" and I am like, "I just thought it would be simple and work as a short st-" and my brain says, "never mind, it is a series." That is where I am at so NaNoWriMo is going to be interesting lol. Best of luck with the twins!
