In this episode I look at two Case Stockmans that on first glance appear to be identical. But on closer inspection they are far from the same! A word of caution for you as well as hard earned lesson for me.

I was lucky to pick up the amber bone stockman you mentioned when it was offered. After some carry it has similar blade rub marks just like your. Funny how that happens.
@MJFallout
@MJFallout 4 жыл бұрын
Well, a bit of blade rub isn't the end of the world as long as it doesn't mar up the blade to badly, or even threaten the cutting edge somehow. With traditional patterns one shouldn't expect to receive a perfect specimen, rather hope for (or cherrypick) one that has few scruffy areas, or displays those kinds of imperfect one minds the least (such as weaker or uneven back springs, or poorly matched covers, or bad swedges, wonky stamps, little dents anywhere, etc.) Like, personally I don't mind much if the stamps are a bit crooked, or if there's a bit of rub.

Thanks Tobias, the 2318 looks to be about the same size and blade configuration as the GEC 291319 they call the Stockyard Whittler from last year. I do like the blades on the Case knife and for a working knife a slight rub does not matter to me.

I just got a Case Stockman with synthetic red handles as my first traditional pocket knife. I wanted a sheepsfoot blade for opening boxes and bags without having to commit to a single-blade folder, and the spey blade's round shape is not intimidating. Kinda afraid to shell out more for bone handles and such. But I am already loving it, even though I was bummed out by the blade rub marks. Take care and always stay safe, now!

Blade rub almost comes with the territory on Stockman knives. If they don't have it when you buy it, they will develop it over time.

Can't complain about Buck. (Well I do some times! ) But seriously, Buck is a great company and they actually are upfront about the steel in the knife. Unlike Case that has changed their "Tru-Sharp" and their "CV" steel on a couple of occasions! I use a Buck Clearwatrer bait knife and their 4 inch US made Mr. Crappie filet knife for most of my pan fishing needs. Both are outstanding!

i have a GEC Wrangler, 571312, with a clip, spey, and punch, with cocobolo handles. I like it because of it's girth and curved sides. In fact, I carried it this past week, and today. Most the Case knives I seen or felt are thinner and flatter. In general, that not to my taste. I haven't tried Ebay yet.

Having a similar what's going on here situation with the Boker Stockman I bought. There's a tiny bit of gappiness between the liners and what looks like a small amount of damage to the scales in the same area. No big deal really but I was lead to believe the German made Bokers never had this. It was a good buy for a German made Boker so I wonder if it was a second? Then.... According to some collectors the knives like mine that don't say Solingen, made in Germany on the knife aren't German made. Mine just says Germany on the red crest on the scales. I searched online for the longest of time and it says all Tree Brands except the Arbolitos are German made. Rather than the tiny fault its a beautifully made quality knife but like yourself, I just needed to know.

I have had problems with two of the six Case knives I have bought. The problems were more than mere aesthetics, and is a high failure rate. The failure rate on my Rough Ryder knives is much lower, in fact it is zero.

i used to buy factory rejects at my local surplus store from schrade and the same kinds of things were wrong with them, pins sticking out a little bit i would buy 5-6 for 5.99 a piece and hand them out to my friends, usually they were large stockman knives, i did however from amazon, buy a new case white smooth bone barlow with the cross shield and was far from satisfied with it, a few weeks later i bought the white smooth bone barlow from rough ryder and was so much more impressed with it, they are both the same size and the only thing that might make the case a better knife to me is the nail nic for each blade is on the opposite side but with the rough ryder you have to open the pen blade to get at the main

Thanks for the lesson Just wondering how you decide to keep some knives in original boxes and not others. Also, am interested to see how you organize and store your collection.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
P.H.F., I keep most of my boxes but my knives are not in them. I remove them from the box and put them in felt lined wooden drawers with other knives. The drawers have silica packs to absorb moisture. Those that have key rings or nails are hanging from hooks. And are checked periodically. The boxes are store separately. I keep most but not all boxes. If the box looks really cool, I keep it. If I can use the box for storage, I also keep it. I’m not concerned about depreciation but I want to have the boxes in the event I give the knife away or sell it.

I have just received the same knife with synthetic black scales from SHC, but with the usual spay blade. Mine came in a box marked Carbon Steel and instead of CV, CS is punched on the blades. I wonder what the difference is? Unfortunately, there is so much gapping on the springs that I'll be returning it for a replacement.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias Жыл бұрын
Sad to hear about the gapping. I've been very fortunate with SHC but I also had to return a butterbean canoe because of poor finish. Word has it Case switched from 1986CV (Chrome Vanadium) to a version of plain vanilla carbon steel in 2021/2022. I have not heard what carbon steel is being used. Here is hoping that it is at least 1080 or above.
@cmd2four
@cmd2four Жыл бұрын
@@KnifeChatswithTobias Thanks for the reply. SHC has graciously accepted my return request, and even granted me the option to exchange it for the version with the punch blade. According to the Case website, they have reverted to 1095 carbon steel for lack of raw materials in lieu of the usual CV.

It's funny you should mention them as I just recently picked up the current Old Timer Camp knife! It will be the subject of an upcoming video. I like the earlier USA made Old Timers better than the modern ones. Primarily, I'm not keen on the way the newer one's saw cut bone looks and the 3Cr13Mov. (considering the asking price of the knife!) Old Timers have always been budget friendly knives so not as valued by "knife aficionados" but I collect more for historical importance and for that reason alone Old Timers are very much on my radar. Let's face it, the difference between an Ulster Boy Scout Knife and Old Timer Scout knife was the handle material and the shield! Both perfectly acceptable knives.

Tobias Gibson how funny, well looking forward to seeing the next video than. I have been debating picking up the old timer Barlow on amazon but not sure if it’s worth it, the quality is my main concern I know it’s a budget knife. I really only buy budget knives and have a small collection of rough ryders and victorinox so far. Just getting started but loving the slip joints.

I'm very, very picky with Case Knives. But I've been very happy with the knives from Shepherd Hills (at least when it is SH exclusive). I think they do a little in-house QC on their products. But you are correct. Rough Ryder has at least caught up with Case in QC. And when you consider the lower price; that puts RR way ahead of them.

Yeah... factory seconds. I got once the opportunity to get a Case knife through a friend travelling to Europe. I got some lousy quality sh&#^$%*t (Medium Stockman.with amber jig bone). Large space between liner and backspring, clip blade has a play in the direction of opening (yes, a non-locking knife has back and forth bladeplay). Blade rubbing, one end of the shield sticking out like crazy... It just doesn't do a favour to the Made in U.S.A. tag...
