Hear me out, what if Bradley is in control of lust, envy, and gluttony and he knew Hughes was smart and was going to figure out his scheme or plan after he saw him in the room with Ed and al. Bradley knew Hughes was smart and he was starting to put the pieces together and had him killed to protect his plan and that's who they refer to as father.

Maes was the smartest character in the entirety of the current main cast, he legit put the whole villain's plan together by himself given some context clues he already had. With his death this also puts Mustang on the trail of the Main Plot where before he was solely concerned with rising in rank and consolidating his own power. You can see this as the shot of Hughes's grave casts a long shadow, showing how this is going to have some serious effect on the plot moving forward.

Yeap. Character wise i think his is the best arc and yet manga wise they fucked it up: SPOILER I think him realizing all the death he caused in the war and his whole arc trying to be him making up for it by taking power and wanting things to change is great, and yet at the end of the manga him curing his sight by using the stone that used the bodies he killed was what fucked it up. He should have refused it and accept it as a sort of final punishment for what he did. And continue to be a leader and changing things by working with Scar. To an extent i always say he didn’t participate in the war by choice. He was lead to believe it was to protect his people and then used as a human weapon, and didn’t realize his errors until he was in the midst of it. But he still is a war criminal despite it. I like that in the anime they didn’t offer him the stone though. They leave it open ended because it seems like he regains his sight but it is never stated. He should have continued to be a leader and make things right, but should have never used the stone with the bodies of people he KNOWS he killed unfairly. Thats to say, he’s still one of my fave characters ever and i think he is brilliantly written. The ending was just… not quite it. The last page of the manga basically. If not for that, his writing would have been complex but flawless. I stick by thinking he’s still blind in the anime. I think is brilliant they cut it out in the anime and caught how much that would have set his growth back.

@@V1G4M1 ooh u right i did kinda blocked that shdjfjjf. Well point remains, his arc was almost perfect except for that. I think it takes away from his consequences. @@valentinafangirling That's not Roy's nature. He would make sacrifices in order to achieve his ideal to shape the country into a better one. He's definitely a means justify the ends type of person. He's not Ed. In fact he constantly berates Ed and looks at him as a naive (but idealistic) child because of the way he refuses to use the stone etc. That's not to say Roy doesn't respect him but he's built different.

That “terrible day for rain” quote has some history. It’s a trope from old action manga series, because back in the day, it was considered unmanly to have the main character cry over anything. That trope was used as the closest an author could get to showing the hero cry. Notably, Fist of the North Star broke the ice by ignoring this, and having its hero Kenshiro frequently cry with manly tears streaming down his face whenever something sad happens, like a friend dying. The trend disappeared soon after that, with the trope no longer being used as a necessity. This scene is a good example, showing both Mustang leaning into it as part of his character, while at the same time, Armstrong, one of the manliest characters in the series, is openly sobbing in front of everyone, showing that both displays are okay and don’t detract from either character.

@ryanakers1372

I'm sure there will be tons of people pointing out the double meaning of Mustang's, "Terrible day for rain" line, but here's why the double meaning: Mustang needs two things for his Alchemy, a spark and his transmutation circle. This makes him very dependent on his gloves because the special material they are made of creates a spark when he snaps and each glove has his transmutation circle drawn on the back. So as long as those gloves stay dry and the circle unbroken he can create infinite fire/explosions with a literal snap of his finger. But when they get wet the gloves can't spark and his flame alchemy is useless. So at Hughes' grave he's not only saying he's sad, but that his ridiculously over-powered alchemy is useless when it comes to saving his friend. And this is me watching it. . .😭😭😭

@@ryanakers1372 I still fundamentally disagree with the idea that he could blame his alchemy for anything. People don’t blame their skills for things. Alchemy isn’t some external thing. It’s not a magic reservoir or anything. It’s a science. Mustang feels that HE is useless. When the rain comes the other officers don’t say his alchemy is useless. They say he is useless. Because the science of flame alchemy is still useful, it’s his inability to use it that is the problem.

A few episodes ago, I likened FMA:B to an emotional roller coaster. Shou Tucker was the first real bump, and Maes Hughes is the next. He's a prime example of a character being too smart for their own good. He figured out a major piece of the puzzle that makes up the story, and only 10 episodes in. And he did it by looking at information that's in plain sight. It was something so important, it got him killed quickly and sloppily to cover it up. This series is brimming with intelligent characters - and yeah, Mustang is definitely one of them - but there are always consequences. Whenever I rewatch these early episodes, it's _really_ interesting how much foreshadowing there is. You're not going to understand it until much later. All in due time... Oh, and as much as I love Double Trouble, they were basically the tutorial for the kind of games that Envy plays. This episode just gives you a glimpse of what a truly, deliberately malicious shapeshifter can do.

I mean, kinda? Her assistant(s) had read her script and had originally drawn the scene with Mustang and Hawkeye as a rainy scene but she corrected them by pointing out Hawkeye's initial dismissal (and then acceptance) of Mustang's claim. Thus, because of how well the scene had been written, even those creating it occasionally had to have their interpretations reviewed.

Not because he didn’t trust her, but because he didn’t want her killed for overhearing what he wanted to tell Mustang Edit: It could also definitely be because he knew that the “secure” line wouldn’t be secure in the slightest. So, the thing about eating the pie with their hands is actually a "Arakawa did sooooo much research for this series" moment. Up until relatively recently, pies were a finger food, made much drier than we're used to. They would be treated fairly similarly to how we think of sandwiches. Remember that this series is set right around the turn of the century, so them eating the pie with their hands is actually an insane detail for Arakawa to have considered for her comic.

Y'know, I'm not gonna tell anyone whether they should or shouldn't feel it's rushed, but...I feel like part of the reason people feel that way is that they are looking back on 03 with nostalgia. Because if you actually compare the number of episodes the characters are in, it isn't much of a difference. It just feels like it is because Hughes isn't introduced until further in the 03 series, and died further in as well (episode 25 compared to episode ten). But he was only in less than half of those episodes. In BH, he is introduced in the very first episode, and he is in nearly every one after that until he dies. So he does get more screentime in 03, but it's only equivalent to maybe another two episodes worth of time. Which certainly isn't nothing, but also isn't quite as big of a difference as it gets made out to be.

"Just make sure you visit us any time you're in Central okay?" I love how the writing is so matter of fact about what's going to happen and you don't even realize until it's too late. Like even the music as Hughes walks away is sad af I'll say it again, DEATH MATTERS in this show. For a universe where supposedly there may be a way to bring people back from the dead, and alchemy seems all powerful, death means something to people. It affects them, stays with them. To put it lightly, Hughes death is incredibly important, especially to Roy, for obvious reasons. But also to others. Life is precious in this show, and that's something that is apparent the further you go in, and death is not taken lightly either. I bring this up because some shows, anime and otherwise, make death just seem like "okay this guy died, let's move on", but this show has the balls to contemplate and stay on death and those who have died for a LONG time...so prepare to cry and be sad XD

I love the detail that Roy’s hair is still done up from the funeral because it shows a LOT about his character. He lost his closest friend and ally, allowed himself to shed ONE tear, and then IMMEDIATELY got to trying to solve the case. Absolutely no hesitation, moping, or even stopping at home to get himself back in order. Just straight to trying to avenge Hughes, right off the bat. It also shows how incredibly intelligent he is. He’s so analytical and able to pick up on so much even after receiving news that completely wrecks most people’s reasoning capabilities. Legend.

If you are even the slightest bit empathetic, this show will teach you the most PAINFUL emotions. 1st it’s PTSD with Nina, now it’s the pain of loss with Hughes. FMA doesn’t just stab you once either. It likes to twist the knife and throw fuel into the fire. We all liked Hughes, but they just had to throw in a ton of caring and adorable scenes with his family before he goes out. But then they make his death super important riddled with details of the grander mystery, so in all likelihood you have to see it more than once. Only for them to decide to have the kids just bombard Hughes with appreciation completely oblivious to his death, IMMEDIATELY followed by his family and everyone he knew mourning his loss. It is a recipe for just emotional turmoil. I think 03’s approach was WORSE because we had gotten to know him MUCH longer. (Worse as in it was more painful. They are equal in narrative strength.) AND you had to go into Brotherhood knowing he wouldn’t escape his fate! At least he goes out like a badass in both. I won’t speak of the mystery itself, since they are completely different. But it was more or less the same for Hughes. It HURT. Ed and Al are going to see their alchemy teacher. And their teacher also taught them combat too….and they have to go to the teacher with the reality that they committed the greatest taboo of alchemist’s. (Also when kids are FANTASTIC martial artists, chances are they got the snot beaten out of them for those reflexes to be so strong. At the very least in the World Wars era.) And although Mustang was always annoyed by Hughes, you can tell JUST how much Hughes meant to Mustang for him to consider the taboo. They really were best friends. And they went through hell and back to make it out of Ishval alive. Imagine making it through an entire war with your best friend only for him to die by regular murder about a little less than a decade later. This episode is HEAVY.

One of the reasons I really liked the 2003 version is that we spent a lot more time with some of the characters like Mayes (14 more episodes in fact) that his death in my opinion held a more weight. HOWEVER that does not take away from how well they did these scenes in brotherhood, and it's even a testament to how well they could establish such a strong emotional connection in less episodes for the viewers and also set up such a strong plotline

These like 10 episodes take place over the first 20-25 of the first series (before it veers way off course) but it hits even harder there because you spend so much more time getting to know Hughes

Holding pies and pastries by the crust is actually quite a common way to eat them here in New Zealand. Granted, they're usually single-serving things, so fully enclosed, but I've seen people eat slices with their hands just fine, too. In fact, it's probably rarer to see them eaten WITH utensils over here.

In the original anime it is a bit more drawn out but because they want to get to the material they didn't get to animate in the first FMA they condensed it a bit. We actually get to see Barry the Butcher and one other story that gets mentioned later before Hughes dies. 🥲 It doesn't hurt any less tho 😭

Latin: [hɔˈmʊŋkʊlʊs]; "little person") is a representation of a small human being, originally depicted as small statues made out of clay. Popularized in sixteenth-century alchemy and nineteenth-century fiction, it has historically referred to the creation of a miniature, fully formed human. The concept has roots in "preformationism" as well as earlier folklore and alchemic traditions. (Wikipedia)

Such a surprise that you don't trust a guy whose title is DER FÜRER. The manga (and in part the first anime-adaption of it) had a lot of little "fluff" episodes, that did not contribute to the larger story overall and was mostly character building. A lot of those where about the secondary characters, like Mustang and Hughes. One of the more iconic ones are where one of Mustangs people ask him why he wants to be Fürer. Mustangs answer is that his first order, will be for all female personnel to wear tiny miniskirts. Needless to say, most of the guys at the office immediately voice their loyalty.
