Elicia's crying gets me every time I watch because I had a cousin not quite understand death at a funeral. He was fine all the way through the funeral service (a memorial with an open casket) but when it came time to leave the service room he asked, "Why are we leaving Granpa? We have to tell him to wake up." His dad tried to gently explain (again, because they had tried to explain for the past few days) but Jj just started yelling and crying to the body for "Paw paw wake up" and insisting kicking and screaming that "He is sleeping. I don't want to leave".

Oh, also: that "pyramid scheme" scene at the beginning of the episode. 1) I love that they translated it as "pyramid scheme," it's MUCH better than the more literal translation in the manga. 2) In the manga version Bradley TOTALLY notices Mustang glaring up at him and thinks, "Hmm, I'm going to keep an eye on that guy."

​@@Talyrion They probably do that because there are two anime based off of the manga, and they can't make Brotherhood exactly like the original, in which I believe the girl does get the first aid kit. They changed it so that you're not rewatching the first fifteen or so episodes of the original anime all over again. There are several instances where the original anime is closer to the manga than Brotherhood. Three that I can think of are in the first and second episodes, where Father Cornello spills his entire plan to Ed and Al before he even knows Al is hollow, and he doesn't know that Rose is with them. Then Al opens his stomach to reveal Rose hiding inside of him, and Cornello realises he's fucked up. Cray is ordered to shoot them and fails, and then Cornello sets the Chimera on Ed. That's how it is in the manga, as well as the original anime. But in Brotherhood, Rose walks in with them, Cray is ordered to shoot Al, fails, and then Cornello tells Rose to shoot Al before realising Ed is the Fullmetal Alchemist, not Al. Rose doesn't want to do it, but does anyway, because Cornello tells her that it's the will of God. Rose does it, misses, shoots Al's head off, and they find out he's hollow. The second time would be the fight between Cornello and Ed in the second episode. In the manga and 2003 anime, Cornello uses the stone to its full capacity, it rebounds, and breaks, Ed realises it's a fake, and that's the end of the fight. In Brotherhood, it rebounds, Cornello makes himself bigger to give himself an advantage over Ed, Ed uses the Leto statue to punch him into the ground, THEN it falls to the ground and breaks. The last instance is also in the second episode, when Rose is asking Ed what she should do and what she should believe in. She approaches Ed and Al holding a gun to them, telling them to give her the stone. In the manga and original anime, she doesn't do that. She just begs Ed to tell her what to do. There are also a couple parts in the manga and original anime that aren't in Brotherhood at all. The episode with the attack on the train, the episode with Yoki (although he is mentioned in Brotherhood before we meet him again later on in the series), the one with Siren, and then the episode with the red water. Those are all in the original anime and manga, but not in Brotherhood. I guess they didn't feel the need to put those episodes in Brotherhood because they didn't really have a meaning for them. They were kinda just fillers. So there's a lot in the 2003 series that's closer to the manga, like the girl getting the first aid kit, that's not in Brotherhood. It's so that you're not watching the EXACT SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN. That would be REALLY boring, and people would just skip over it because they'd already seen it. They had to spice it up a little so it wasn't tedious to watch.

The only time Envy is ever called 'it' is when he's been run down by Roy and is in his true form If you want to believe Envy is androgynous, that's fine. But at least call him 'them' instead of 'it." The first time I experienced Hughes death was back in 05 with 03 anime and it devastated me too. I was like WTF, you can’t kill Hughes, he’s too awesome. His daughter broke down at the funeral and I was bummed. I didn’t cry, but no anime death hit me as hard as Hughes. It came out nowhere for me too. No matter which version I watch this on it always pulls on my heart string.

To elaborate a little more on exactly WHY his hands are shaking, Bradley says later in the anime that they were shaking out of anger because of Elicia's screaming. He then goes on to say that she's such an awful, misbehaved child and that Saleem would NEVER act like that (but that's a VERY unfair comparison, seeing as how Pride is the oldest homunculus and not actually a cutesy human child like he pretends to be.)

In the first Fullmetal alchemist, they really beat you over the head with that funeral scene. In that one, the little girl was like "why are they burying daddy? He has a lot of work. Daddy wake up!" T.T I think that was the first episode of the FMA series that I ever watch and even I was bawling like a baby.

I appreciated this version of the death of Hughes. It definitely adds a bit more flare to the plot but, I still think his death, like most of the heart breaking moments in this series, was better in the original. There wasn't alot of adherence to the manga so in regards to the character development and the painful tragic story telling they had free reign especially with the almost compete lack of real levity most of the time. It was just a darker version of what you guys are watching now and far more heart wrenching but, I'm glad this softball version of his death got a tear or two from Chris. I was a balling mess when it happened myself. It's awful...and it doesn't help it became a point in the marketing campaign for the show...there's a DVD special edition box case out there with Hughes and Mustang shaking hands...and it ruined me in the middle of a FYE in a mall.

I don´t know if you guys will read the comments but there are 4 OVAs for this series and they can really add to the story. If you find the time you should watch each OVA at the time it takes place in the series between the main episodes because it will make much more sense than just adding them after you finished the show. Obviously they are not essential to the plot but they add more backstory to some of the main cast and explain events that weren´t shown in the show, so they are worth watching. I´m sure your friend who has already finished FMA will be able to tell you when each OVA is supposed to be watched.
