I follow a man called Martijn Doolaard who is renovating to small stone cabins in the Italian mountains. He shows you how he has repointed the stone walls with coloured mortar to make it water prove and warm. He might be helpful to you and making your cabin more comfortable.

Yes, apply a stucco plaster to the entire stone walls inside. This is needed to keep out the insects and seal against cold drafts in winter. If you want to, you can preserve the stone texture to some extent by wire brushing the stone surfaces after plaster dries a bit. When it’s fully dried, paint it white or a light cream color to keep it looking larger / brighter, and somewhat clean. Roof leaks will need to be identified and something done to seal them, short of removing the outer tiles and replacing the entire roof decking and tar paper / sheeting. Making an old storage shed habitable and comfortable is a challenge. It’s a start.

Definitely stucco the entire inside 2 you got to replace the roof ties and ridge, looks like they are dryroted and insect damage, ...you have to dismantle the entire roof and it would be a good time to poor a reinforced concrete belt around that would make it solid and bring the interior height +20 cm Add a nice window to see that wonderful view . I'd use the fiberglass concrete mixture, add coloring to it and completely seal the inside. It would stop bugs from coming inside. The stone would need to be very clean of soot, loose mortar. Probably consider a little more soil around outside to seal the stone and provide more coolness in Summer. Probably plant some trees around outside for shading to sit immediately outside and keep a microclimate under the shade for house. If you have a stream, the water could be pumped above the home into a green or black (prevent algae growth) tank and then gravity feed to the house. It could be used for basic things except drinking water. I'd have that roof checked really well for strength before doing anything.

Glad you were safe in the heat wave. Your property is looking so beautiful. I would choose option B for the inside walls because it might keep spiders and mice out. They like to hide in little nooks. The horses are so beautiful too!

@@leawIt’s all looking great and coming to life again with your love being put into its bones. Plaster is best for your health. Take a picture of the wall or walls you want to be seen as the rock wall. Use the plaster to seal the rocks and chinck around the stones to keep the shape of the original stone wall look, each stone will be enhanced; when dry, use your picture to paint or stain the exact look on the stones before you plastered them, now you’ll have a sealed and cleanable wall, but best of all the rock stones wall you love and it will match your picture of the before look. It’s doable and would be beautiful. When plastering, don’t try to keep the wall smooth, use the jutting edges sticking out as possible to create the form of the real stones character sticking out of the wall. Be well and safe, much love and happiness to all beautiful people ❤🎉.

@@leaw I vote for lime plaster inside where you can see the rocks but spaces are all filled in between stones aka "pointing" as was done by the Indie Project people, Bea and Theo, seen on You Tube. Pointing material in a color that blends nicely with the stone colors. This keeps out bugs and mice, and is nice and clean and cozy.

Here is something you might consider in the future: Find out how the breezes blow during the cooler summer nights. Put in windows on opposite ends of the house/stone cottage, open them at night and close in the morning. This traps in the cool air, keeping you cool during the hot summer days. I lived in an old 1892 farm house with no insulation, no a.c. and that's how I kept my home (somewhat) cool in the summer here in the states. It did get warmer by the end of the day, but it was a wood home, whereas the stone home will help keep it cool. Love your videos, and thank you for taking us along.

you can use pipes in the walls where there are holes for more air flow easy to block them up we have 6inch pipes in our ferro wall for air flow - we live in Australia it gets hot here too

I would refinish the house with both option A AND B! Do most of the interior with a stucco finish but Leave an accent wall. On the accent wall, you may want to apply a “stone sealer” or “masonry sealer”. These products not only seal the stone to protect it but also can enrich the natural stone color.

For the inside of the house, maybe a mix of interior finish, with smooth parts in areas that you would need to clean more often, such as a food prep or kitchen area. And also perhaps an area next to a bed, if the bed is up against a wall. I love watching your adventure!

I would go with option B for inside the house. It will be easier to seal and maintain. It will also be more calming. You'll still be able to enjoy the full stone look on the outside, but have a cleaner, calmer look on the inside

I would consider the Adobe interior of the house. It will still look rustic but maybe easier to seal all the openings and get rid of the black left by fire made inside the house. You have done well so far 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Must feel great that the fires missed your property but you must feel horrible for those affected Suggestions for structure: 1. Build an outdoor kitchen to open up available space within the living structure so that way you can put a wood stove in the corner where the kitchen would have been. 2. If you like Adobe, you could run armored (electric) cable within your structure for outlets and lights and hiding them after with the Adobe plaster.

I totally admire you both for having taking on this new life with a toddler. You''re an inspiration to many! I can't wait to see what you do with your stone house. I was also thiking that you should renovate it and use as your temporary home. I would definately plaster the inside walls, that way one keeps out the bugs and it will also look brighter and bigger. Perhaps keep small sections of treated stone wall inside the shower, or as a back-splash in the kitchen or a fireplace wall. The house will look great with some TLC and possibly add a wide cement patio around the entire house for Luce to play and for you guys to sit and enjoy dinner and watch beautiful sunsets!!

It seems all over the world it's been terribly hot. Here in Canada it has been unbearably hot and the air very thick and humid. It makes it difficult to do any work outside and in fact they warn against doing any laborious type of work outside right now.. Also in western Canada we've been dealing with wild fires for quite some time. And in Eastern Canada, we've been dealing with very dangerous floods. We've beat many many records with the high temps. Love watching sweet baby Luce. She is without a doubt the sweetest baby girl. She's doing great walking on her own. Take care and stay hydrated. 💜

Cari amici, thank God you were not affected by the wild fires, we saw the the hot heat over the South of Europe, lots of work to clean up, the orchard, the trees, the stone house all in good time. Clean the stones redo the stucco and paint the stones give them a bright colour. Luce è un amore, children love animals, cats, dogs, horses their favorite. I truly enjoy seeing a different prospective of life there in Sicily. How everyone seems like family ❤. Here in America we are surrounded by mountains and water and its beautiful as well but, you have to have as you always say, The beautiful people. I enjoy watching the interaction with the community and the help they give you. Life seems rewarding every day. Stones are nice but adobe walls are lovely too. Where I live, near Santa Barbara, Ca. there are many old adobe homes from 200 years ago that have been restored and the adobe walls are so beautiful. Have you thought of building a nice outhouse outside to not take up too much room in the little house? Our friends have one with a composting toilet and it is very nice. You guys are such a beautiful family. 💕 I’m glad you are ok from the wildfires, where I live, we experience them too. Scary and sad. I’m glad you have your apartment for now, to retreat to. I will buy your olive oil when you start producing. It’s all I ever use. My grandparents are from Italy, Calabria, Sicily and Reggiano.

On the stones, I am a big fan of the combined aesthetic of stucco and stone. I love this weeks episode, I do vote for the exposed stone because I love stone houses. Whatever which way they do it in Italy I think you can clean and seal it with something I’ve seen where they put a lime stone treatment or something it looks white in between I do like that look. Anyway once I’m free, I’m gonna come and help you guys but right now I’m in the USA and I’m taking care of my 97-year-old dad!!

At first I was thinking the same. But then realized it would take away of original charm of historical build. They are going to build a new home there so I think this is going to be temporary situation. Kind of like living in an RV but bigger.

A sone house like that could not support the weight of an additional floor. They would be better off going thru Italy's nightmare permitting process and build a new home.The stone house should remain a facility that supports the olive trees.

Your property is so stunning with the backdrop of the sea, the colors are so healing. For your stone house I suggest a combination of the two options (A&B) & suggest checking out The Indie Project & how they restored their little stone barn. Some of it was painstakingly slow work but the effect was gorgeous & truly honored the authenticity of the building while at the same time making it functional.

Gorgeous view of the ocean, complete with the sound of waves and sea breeze. Option B, cover the stones with stucco and paint over with earth tone. It will give better protection from outside insects and brighten up inside. Delightful experience as you transform the property. Next year with vegetables.

We too had very hot weather here in Iowa for a week. We had a big storm, but Now it is nice again and should not be so hot anymore, so I can also work outside again now.Luce is such a happy baby due to the loving care of beautiful Sara, and hardworking Luca as well!
