I live in northern Sweden and honestly it's not that bad during the winter, like yeah it's cold and you have to shovel snow but some people in these comments make it seem like its impossible when it really isn't. Honestly the windy rain/snow mixed winters in the UK are more annoying cause you get wet and cold, in Sweden you basically only get cold if you're not wearing enough clothes. "There's no bad weather, only bad clothes" is a common saying in Sweden and it's true :P

In Sweden the asking price is not an asking price at all. It is a starting price. Everything nearly always goes for more, sometimes much more. If something needs a lot of work you could be the sole bidder because construction is insanely expensive so that puts people off. Good luck.

On the few occasions that I’ve been in those home-buying scenarios, I have a ritual right before placing the first offer: I stop to do a hard dive on “counting my blessings” and being deeply grateful for my life in that current moment. I sit with that for a while and then say to myself: “I am about to ride an emotional rollercoaster that’s out of my control. Thankfully, if I lose out on the property, it won’t impact my current amazing life. Worst case…. I’m back to ‘square one’, where blessings abound and I still have my savings.” Things have a way of working out.

I have to tell you, I believe a lot of times those bids are not real that they have. They know what your limit is because the realtors do talk to each other and they will do the bidding wars just to get you to go up to your limit. My husband and I went through that and we did the same thing you did by stopping fairly close to our limit. A couple days later they called us saying the other people pulled out and it did make us believe that it was not a real bidding war. So we told them that we were no longer interested and then we watched the property sit for another little while. Then we went back and offered them their beginning asking price again and they took it. We got the house and we were very happy about it but at the same time we were angry at the feeling of being manipulated or at least they tried to manipulate us. Of course that may just be the way things work in America because that's where we live and the realtors often talk to each other and want to get the biggest commission they can so they will work with each other. So hold out for that dream home. And don't put yourself into a bind and maybe even have a little extra money to put into some renovations. Best of luck and blessings to you both. 29:27

I can't remember the last time I felt so nervous watching a KZbin video. I can imagine it was a stressful process. As someone who has lived in Sweden before, I'm also dreaming about owning a cottage in Sweden. It's just so beautiful and peaceful there. Good luck on finding your dream house!

Don't feel bad I have bought and remodeled a few places. When I got bid out of a place I have later found out some had sewer failure or a well failure that would have cost a bundle to get fixed right after buying the property. So always keep the price in mind that you need to do a real inspection run the shower for more than a minute, flush the toilets and get a good look at the roof even if you use binoculars to look at it. Something will come up but if you can identify it before hand it is helpful. Remember on a long drive way they are great but you will need to plow it out yourself or hire someone to do it.

Oh Beans, it’s definitely hard to find something you love for it to slip through your fingers, but it reminds me of a quote: “you still haven’t met all the people you will love”. I promise there will be other places that you will love that come up along your search and while a house can feel very special, it becomes a home because you make it yours. This journey is just the beginning. Allow yourself to get excited, take note of the things that drew you to the places that give you “that feeling” so you can look for others with similarities. Sending you lots of love, From some kids who are on their 6th owned home.

Sweden has a very, very long winter, and even though you might be travelling, you still have to heat the house all winter to protect the plumbing... didn't see the 20,000 dollar house that you mentioned in your title.. property around water will have mosquitoes all summer...maybe it was a blessing in disguise...

That there are water puddles like at 11:34 when the snow melts is not uncommon. Remember the ground is frozen and snow is frozen water that need to go somewhere. It is therefore not uncommon that there is standing water and soft ground for a short period of time and the rest of the year the ground is hard and dry. It is not just the top of the ground that is frozen, in the middle part of Sweden frost free deep to burry water pipes, etc it is around 2 meters. So how water behaves just when the snow melts and the rest of the year can be quite different. If you just have lifted in England where there are no winters with frozen ground and lots of snow you might now know what to expect this time of year. Moss does not just grow where it is wet, on hard ground it can grow when grass will not. The lawn outside where I live is in part wet and soft right now but is very dry the rest of the year. Ground that is used to drive and park vehicles on for the rest of the year might be very soft when it thaws and you need to keep vehicles away until it has time to dry. I am not saying there it no problem, the ground might be moist for a large part of the year but it might be extremely dry to, it is very hard to tell from how it looks this part of the year. I would look for how the ground is below the house, a crawl space below houses is not uncommon or just look at the condition of the wood close to the ground.

I know what you’re going through. We put in a bid on a house and immediately after several bids came in higher than ours. One was a cash offer too. Our realtor asked us if we wanted to be in second position and a week later the cash offer fell through and we took the first position and closed about 6 weeks later. Now 7 years later we sold that place and moved back across country to where I really want to live. Keep looking, keep dreaming. Always offer less than you can afford. There will be work that needs the rest of your money. Good luck and good cheer.

There is a reason why this wasn’t meant to be. I don’t know if you intend to live there full time or use it as a holiday retreat, but please be careful of the practicalities, like where is the nearest emergency hospital.
