I spent a lot of my childhood playing in the jungles of Borneo but my parents and grandparents mostly taught me about plants that were medicinal, edible, toxic and/or had other practical uses. Only when you are older and have travelled the world do you realise you had taken the beauty of nature for granted when you had it so readily around you.

Like you I grew up in gorgeous gardens....10 years on the island of Java. So many of my indoor plants here in Canada are the same ones that were just part of our huge garden when I was a child. I would love to go back for a day just to walk through those gardens of our house....would have to travel back in time. I think now my house plants are a way to appreciate the foliage I grew up with.

@@jcsmith7898 Yes! And I find that I'm growing and searching for plants that would even be considered a weed. Sometimes I go into shock at the prices that garden centres and ebay sellers charge for certain plants! Now I just propagate and share my plants with family and friends and plant swap groups.

Home's collections are EPIC and I don't say that lightly. All of his plants should be made into a National Botanic Garden, in Thailand. I've seen a lot of plants in my lifetime... but I am blown away by his collection. Summer Rayne Oaks... your channel rocks... I can't keep up!

summer, my favorite episode to date! uncarina grandidieri (wicked fruit) Home says dont touch, Summer, i already touched it. you were very lucky, these things are incredibly hard to get off and draw blood. i use to have a large cycad collection and cycas debaoensis was a favorite. brownea macrophylla cant be beat. i remember the first time i ever saw one blooming was at fairchilds in miami. we had to wait several months before we could go back and swipe some seeds. very low germination rate but managed to get a few. plants grew very low and sprawling(about 15 foot across). thanks again to Home for allowing us in his garden. is the b and b open yet? several of us want to come and visit!

Home enjoys that rarified level of horticulture where one grows not only choice species but rare and superior varieties of said species. His success with seed production of Brownea macrophylla is illustrative of what a dedicated expert hobbyist can achieve. I love that he refers to ground covers as ‘dressing’. ~ You narrowly escaped a sticky situation when touching the Uncarina , aka ‘mousetrap tree’, fruit. Those barbed fruits are extremely difficult to extricate once they get a hold of you. ~ I liked all three episodes but the succulent and cactus tour was my favorite. (I’m a lapsed foliage aficionado, currently suffering from xeric-mania.)
