I started shaving in 1989. My dad's medicine cabinet had the yellow barbasol. Sometimes he had a green or purple can. Always used barbasol. I seen a teal Gillette foamy can once. He had a trac 2, atra plus with the knurled metal handle which I love and then he went to sensor & the excel version. From 1971-1998 2 blades was a sufficient shave. Once Gillette went 3 blades it was all downhill. I'm buying an atra off Amazon and picked up a 10 pack of atra blades at Walmart for $6 an absolute steal. My dad died in 2004 at the age of 83. When I shave I think of him

Agreed, I started with a Sensor when I was a teenager, and hated the Mach 3 when it came out so I stuck with Sensor Excels for as long as I could afford them. I mostly use safety razors now, but still keep some Trac II and Atra blades around for when I'm flying somewhere and can't have the double edge blades in my carry-on.

Good to see this episode, I can relate to it. When I started shaving in 1968-69-ish my mother bought me a Gillette Knack kit (same as the later Slim Twist) I started shaving with that. But when I went to college in 1973 we received a gift bag from the college bookstore and in that was a free Gillette Trac II razor with a couple of refill cartridges. I don't remember if it was in a can or not, might have been. I used that Trac II for over 20 years, same handle, it never broke! I could get store brand refill cartridges until the early-mid 1990's, I think. It finally did break and I started using disposable razors. Never happy with the quality of the shave or how long the blades stayed sharp or the fact that I was throwing so much plastic in the garbage. But, that was my shaving life most of the next 30 years. Then just a couple of months ago I found sinatralennon on my KZbin page...then a bunch of other shaving KZbinrs....and I discovered that the old double edge safety razor was still a thing!! I had no idea that you could still buy razors and blades...the idea never occurred to me...I would have thought it was just some old thing that was perfectly good in it's day but is now long gone. All that to say...that I bought a razor and blades....and had my first comfortable close shave in literally 50 years!! My Thanks to sinatralennon and a huge number of other shaving KZbinrs!!

It's amazing just how well the Trac II works. I have one that I use occasionally with Personna blades (very inexpensive) and always like the way it handles. Forgetting that it actually has two blades I imagine it to be more like an injector razor without the risk of a nick.

When I started shaving in the late '70's I used this razor as it was the de facto standard of the era. As you noted this razor was introduced in the fall of 1971 - 50 years ago this year. The one you have there is the original handle with the "slide off" removable cartridges. The full disposable version which came out a few years later was called the Good News. Every disposable since the 80's including the ones you have tried out in a few of your great "budget shave" videos are clones of the Good News. In the fall you should do a 50th anniversary Trac II shave.

@RockandrollNegro
@RockandrollNegro Жыл бұрын
I would argue that the Bic Disposable, which pre-dated the Good News razor by two years, was the de facto standard safety razor of the era. (Most men I knew over thirty- the WWII/Korea War generation-- had an electric razor). Three Bic Disposables was what we were issued in Basic (we had to buy the rest at the PX, and couldn't have double edged razors with removable blades while in Basic) and a lot of guys just kept using them forever. Eventually, since Gillette had the Selective Service contract, they began replacing Bic Disposables in Basic with Gillette Good News razors, which are now Sensor IIs. There were a lot of people using Gillette Trac IIs and the Schick equivalent in the seventies, but shave for shave, the Bics and Good News were cheaper, thus what most guys used.

Yes, you can get carts for these. I was 6 when this razor hit the market. Dad was a DE shaver. But I do remember him getting one of these. He went back & forth between the two types. But for as long as I remember, I think he used his Super Speeds about 60% of the time. My first couple of shaves when I was around 12, you know, just gooning around, was with both types. I remember the TV ads for the Trac II. It was a big deal. Like you said. Marketing magic.

The Trac II is like a nice compromise between safety razors and modern cartridge crap because you still have complete control over pressure and angle. The Atra and Sensor took away a little bit of that control but are still infinitely better than the Mach 3 or Fusion for this reason, starting with the Mach 3 they dumbed things down far too much. And because you used that old military can opener I was going to tell you about the KZbinrs that open old rations, but I guess you've already seen them :)

I remember 1971. In fact, I bought my first razor, a safety razor in 1971 with paper route money at PW Super, in San Jose, CA. I was just 12ish and I could not wait to shave even though I had nothing to shave except for maybe a peach fuzz mustache. I kept this purchase a secret. I don't remember the shave creme, but, I well remember going into my parents bathroom and shaving for the first time when nobody was around. Very exciting, then I think I had to wait a couple of weeks to shave again. No longer do I have that 1971 razor. Maybe I'll try to find one. Currently I shave with a 1956 Gillette Super Speed razor, or is it a Gillette Slim? I purchased it at a local antique store, and I must say, it looks brand-spanking new and offers such a smooth shave. I've always been a shaving nut. I have to go cold turkey to grow hair. By the way, the name SinatraLennon, I get the Sinatra part, I guess, but where does the Lennon part come in?

I’m older than you. My dad taught me to shave with a Gillette safety razor (which I kick myself in the butt for losing) in 1978 when I was 14. We still didn’t get into the disposable razor thing. By the time I graduated from HS I was using multi blades but still hated the feel of the trac II. Funny thing is my father gave me some as back ups in case we ran out of our DEs or non-disposable multi-blades. I still have a small bag of about 10. They all have gone pretty dull even unused (I’ve tried one or two).

Dude you need to switch to crack lite. In 1971 I was 16 years old. Hell we my have gotten one in the mail then, sort of like the America online CD in the 80's One of my fondest memories of my grandfather was (when I a boy)when I would watch him shave and being that boy said I couldn't wait to be able to start shaving. And one morning I told him that. He just looked at me and said, someday Rob you will hate it,to that I replied, no way grandpa shaving was way to cool to ever hate. I don't thing that started the demise of the safety razor was the cartridge razor. Think about it same style / shape of handle. Less one major safety issue. the handling of the used blades. Was that Wilkerson swords invention? I think the other issue is the safety razor blades being so so sharp. and crewing up your face of a teenage boy, and grown men also. I gave up on finding a safety or cartridge razor after the Track II got a foot hold. I just thought the had gone the way of the dinosaur. Then the cost of them was driving me crazy. Forcing me to electric razors and disposable razors. But I was a fan of shaving brushes and soap. Then and add popped up on KZbin for a Henson Razor. Really great shave I mean really good shave. I have a new bagger brush and marble soap bowl in route. Time to love shaving again. Grandpa was right sort of.

Great video! I think the cartridge razor is actually technically superior to a DE, but unfortunately I also believe they're ripping us off, and they've gone way overboard with the number of blades. I use the Sensor Excel for my daily BBS shaves, and would only reach for a DE (or straight) to remove a lot of growth. With the cartridge, my shaves are super quick, and weeper & nick free. (unless I'm REALLY careless). I hope Gillette keep making the Sensor twin blades - I feel no need whatsoever for any more blades.

I cant get a bbs with any cartridge, safety razors will though, with that said the trac 2 gives me a decent shave and when i dont want to take the extra couple of minutes i use the trac 2. I think they both have pro's and cons. If i use a mach 3 or fusion my face hurts and i get pretty bad razor bumps so i usually just stick to my trac 2 or bic metal disposables when im not using my tech.

Shaving is such a different experience from person to person. I notice it every time someone mentions price. I realzie for some people this is the main reason they go for DE. For me, it's just a nice bonus. If using a DE was twice as much as a cartridge razor, I'd probably still use one because cartridge razors leave my face feeling like hamburger.
@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 4 жыл бұрын
@doctordonuthin sorry for the late reply - only just now noticed it. The Gillette Sensor remained absolutely fine, HOWEVER ..... drum roll......I've been using a DE now for a long time! 😀 There's a few reasons - running cost, ease of cleaning, and also I kind of feel a sense of achievement. I do get slightly more weepers than a cartridge. It took me a while to perfect my technique - especially doing lateral strokes under my chin & jaw, where it is extremely easy to cause weepers. The key, for me, is to use VERY light pressure, and multiple strokes over each area. I can do the strokes quickly, but they have to be light. That, combined with skill at stretching and exposing the bristles to the maximum extent possible. I'm using a mild razor (that cheap Chinese one, who's name escapes me atm), and Astra SP blades. It's all working very well indeed. I even use a DE in the car, with minimal lubrication - that's working well too. (I'm a chauffeur, so I have very long days, and like to stay very clean shaven) Edit: another thing that helped me - I hold the razor very loosely, and let it glide, and kind of bounce around a bit, so that when it encounters resistance, it kind of bounces over it, reducing the risk of causing a weeper. It took me a while to realise that even though extremely light strokes feel like they are doing nothing, they do actually do quite a lot, but yes, definitely multiple strokes over each area. Edit 2: it's the Weishi razor that I'm using. A guy on YT said that he thought that the gold/brass ones might be made a bit better than the silver coloured ones, so that's the colour I bought. I'm no expert, but it seems absolutely fine.

Funny thing about Barbasol; when I saw that can for the first time in Jurassic Park (the prop that is used to hide the stolen DNA samples in); I just assumed it was a fictional brand because I have never seen it IRL and it looked rather cartoonish to me since it's an aesthetic that is not common here in Norway. I don't think they are sold here much if at all; so it wasn't until a few years ago (or 10 years, I dunno; time flies when you're 40+) when I saw someone on KZbin trying to recreate the prop from Jurassic Park and he commented that the current design of the Barbasol didn't match so he had to create his own; and that's when I realised it was a real brand.

I get horrible razor burn from safety razors, so now I use the gillette Atra for daily shaving, and only use safety razors for a 1 week beard or more since they seem to give me a soothing shave when I have about a weeks worth of hair, but sting and pull like crazy before that

Whoa... lol Was the cartridge removable? Or did you just "break" it loose when you dropped it? :P(I'm kidding!, Personna still makes Carts for the TRAC 2) I just got a hold of a Sensor Excel, I now understand WHY people liked it so much over the Mach3-Fusion etc etc etc. Even the Dorco Comfort Thin is nice. guessing because those Carts have the Open back to easy rinse as well. Nice vid as usual!

After watching just a few of your videos, I ended up buying the Crusader from Vikings Blade. I like how it's adjustable and has a comb and flat side. My Gillette Fusion 5 blade razor always gets caught, and having to shave my neck in 4 different directions against the grains is not friendly to my skin. I then have to keep them unclogged.

@@SinatraLennon I got the razor with Vikings' semi-aggressive blades. Didn't want to go too mild. My shave came out smooth, but I applied too much pressure to my neck and nicked it pretty badly lol. It's something to learn for right now but I like it. What sets apart the Crusader razor is that it doesn't use numbers for adjustment. From what I learned, you have to learn how to turn it a quarter turn and 1/8 a turn to make your own settings. It's unique in its own way. Maybe one day you can make a video with it.

It’s not that I’m a shaving soap snob. In fact I just use Palmolive and Aqua Velva every day. It’s that Barbasol is not slick at all in my opinion and gets dry way too fast. Like shaving with toothpaste.

I think the more blades you add, it actually makes the razor less effective somehow. Because I notice those "cheap" razors that look like this actually cut more sharper than than a new blade. So maybe more blades is worse.
@smievil
@smievil 2 жыл бұрын
maybe two blades are fine, but at some points it's probably just a gimmick force you apply are probably spread among each blades, so 1 blade probably has more pressure applied compared to a 3 bladed razor. i didn't really do well in physics class though.

I think double blade was a great invention. Great shave, faster then double edge, no nick. Any more then 3 blades isjust a gimmick. You can buy personnar refills cheap. 100 for $20
