It’s great that because of the wonders of You Tube that we can see places that have been reported to be dangerous and make our own minds up to realise that most places are quite safe, I was living in Colombia for 4 years in the 1980’s and sure you had to be aware of being cautious with your surroundings, but my time there was fine, in fact it was an exciting time to be there, I was married to a Colombian with 3 young children and life was challenging but no more or less than any other country that I could have gone too!

Roy Goad I think you're right. I was utterly surprised when I saw that Ewa zu Beck could travel in Syria (Damaskus for one) and that life went on there pretty much as in every other country in the Middle East. The only difference was the construction work and the renovations going on. Made me wonder why the hell ppl (so called refugees) still make the journey to Europe and my country when there are places in their own country that are safe. Then it struck me...social welfare and benefits 🙍🏻♂️

@ JD ,,,, agreed. I'm sure it is easy to spend a week somewhere and come to the easy, pleasant conclusion. Also places change with changing conditions. I lived for 18 years in Todos Santos on the southern Baja peninsula. No murders and minimal theft for the first 12 years. Beautiful people, town and experience. Not like that as much now. Cartel is present now and more crime including deaths. So, so sad. Yes,,,the populace goes about it's business and mostly without injury. However it is possible to be in wrong place/wrong time. Mentally and emotionally stressful. Not saying don't go but be realistic, aware and mindful. Good luck travelers.

@@horseplop9, these statistics are based on a population sample. I live in Guadalajara which many would consider a dangerous place. I’ve lived here for 30 years, and of course one hears about things, terrible things happening in certain areas, and maybe encounters of some acquaintance, but personally I have never had anything terrible to share because depending on where you live will determine how safe or exposed you are to certain experiences. Said that, I have visited Leon many times. I have never had nothing remotely dangerous happened to me or my family. Hope this helps in some way.

Irapuato, Mexico, really one of the most dangerous cities in the world. But travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

I was born and have been living in Irapuato for 34 years. Several people in their comments mention that it looks like a paceful small town and actually it is. Unfortunatelly, it is true that public order has become worse (not only here but he whole country's) but since it has been categorized as the 4th most dangerous city in the world, one would expect to see shootings and caos every second, something that is completely false. I can say that almost all the violence and murder cases are related to drug cartels and most of them occur in determinated places (rural areas and outskirts). Of course, like most cities in the world, depending on the time of day, there are areas that one tries to avoid because of mugging (For example, the overpass where you were walking). Besides that, I think is not a bad place to live.

It is safe, as long as you learn the ropes, example... drugs are the number one reason someone will peel your cap, during sept 2017 to about aug 2020 there was about 10 to 20 people being killed per day within the city which Is not that big, ive heard many saw very few and experiened none. Many people here will be friendly and some aren't at all but stay out of clubs at night and just dont go into bad neighborhoods and youll be alright. Of course the possibilities of being killed by a bus, stray bullet, confused for someone else or robbed at gunpoint which is also the second most lethal crime, you should be alright, I live here so I know and I grew up in Los Angeles during the 90s, very similar

So, I actually live in Irapuato. I would say that it depends on the zone. The area where he's walking is relatively safe at night, I speak from experience because I lived in the neighborhood for a couple years. I frequently went on foot at night to an ATM that is right around the corner from the cathedral, then went dining to a nearby taqueria and then walked back home. Most crime is concentrated in a few neighborhoods.

Hi. I live in Guadalajara, JAL. Mexico. I will be moving to Irapuato sometime by the end of the year or beginning of the next. My husband was offered a position near Irapuato and we will relocate there. I have only passed Irapuato on my way to Mexico City or coming back to Guadalajara so I was curious about it. I really was in shock when you mentioned about how dangerous of a town it is, but I have learned that depending on where you live in such place you are exposed or somehow more safe from these horrible statistics. My son drove his father last week to Irapuato because he wanted to make sure it is livable place; and of course they didn’t stay near downtown where you were walking. My son said they found a very nice part of town with a nice mall and restaurants with excellent dining. So I am choosing to believe him because I will not be moving all over the place when we relocate. But thank you for making me aware of the security, and I will be cautious and maybe one day will share my experiences with you.
