Fun fact: my friend Sharon actually helped me with the very first video I edited. This was in 2009 when I was living in Portland, Oregon and I came across an online travel contest in which the winners would be flown to Australia to help promote tourism in the country by filming their travels in a van for several weeks, all of it paid for. This was years before Sharon moved to Australia. She also lived in Portland and had imovie on her computer, so I used that to edit the video. It's nothing impressive, very simple which is one of the reasons I didn't win, I'm sure. But you have to start somewhere. You can check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZitY6uCnreBjZY

@@FarAwayInWA Yeah I sorta screwed up, people had told me to head up there but I booked three nights in Cairns and it's quite the tourist scene but with no beach. I'm sure I'll make the most of it and will definitely head up to Port Douglas, either on a day trip or for a couple nights after here.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos You also can't swim in the ocean up there this time of year because of the Irukandji jellyfish. Although if you travel out to the reef you can swim there. Best place for the beach this time of year is South-East Queensland and then heading south into NSW. I'd suggest making your way down here after Cairns, but then it looks like the weather might turn rainy here in SE QLD as well next week.

I live in Sydney, but gosh I love Melbourne and glad you’re enjoying it. There used to be a stupid competition between the cities, but I reckon we’re so different and unique by now that it’s no longer relevant and we can celebrate both equally… and least that’s the feeling I get amongst Sydneysiders nowadays. I’m certain it’s now much the same amongst Melbournians too these days.

@@tobyb6248 Funny you mention this. As an expat living in the US who grew up in Sydney. Every time I encounter another Australian from Melbourne 100% of the time they have to compare Melb to Syd and how much better it is. I never reply because I don't care. Aussies from other cities never compare or compete. Perhaps they have nothing else to talk about, idk.

Great video! Sharon got it mostly right about the Yarra River. When the Europeans asked what the name of the river was, they were actually standing beside a small waterfall. It was the waterfall that was called Yarra Yarra, which meant "always flowing". The aboriginal people called the river Birrarung which means "river of mist". The park between Federation Square and the MCG is called Birrarung Marr which translates to "beside the river of mists".

As a Sydneysider I would say that Melbourne is absolutely the coolest city in Australia. Still, having grown up in the southern suburbs of Sydney, I would prefer to live in Sydney because of the beaches, waterways and National Parks. Love to visit though. Melbourne is known for having “four seasons in one day” so it’s great to see you have finally found some sunny weather, though ironic it’s in Melbourne after a rainy Sydney. More often than not it’s he other way around. Wow St Kilda food prices are up there with Sydney prices. Don’t remember that being the case the last time I was there which I just realised was 9 years ago! Time to visit again.

She lived in the building above the KFC you mentioned and her partner at the time was a chef at a restaurant in Fed Square! I loved the city and area and this brought back some great memories. Lucky you. The weather cooperated for your photographic ramble (meant in the walking sense), but then I thought, as all Melburnians do, “Hey it’s Melbourne, give it an hour or two …”. Melbourne was not much of a town until Gold was discovered in the 1800’s but at the peak of the Gold Rush, Melbourne was the richest town on Earth so a lot of good architecture combined with the wide grid street layout and historical preservation being key, the blend of old with new blends IMHO. I hope you were able to experience some good weather for the remainder of the Melbourne leg of your trip.

Seems like a mix of a lot for cities. Would love to visit there. I'm looking forward to the Cairns video as I visited when i was a kid, as I've got family who live there.

Hi Gabriel, What a change of pace from visiting Sydney. Melbourne has a mellow west coast vibe and traveling around with Sharon made the transition easier to see the different sites. I like the fact the city uses trams a nice easy way of getting around. Melbourne seems to be a tech hub whereas Sydney seems to be more the financial hub both are very beautiful. Looking forward to seeing more of Australia still much to see.

I’m so glad you finally made it to Australia. I’ve been waiting years for you to finally go there but it was worth the wait. I want to go to Australia so bad, but I just don’t have the money and there’s not really an easy way to get there

I'm not sure if nicer is the right word, but Melbourne definitely looks more interesting a place to visit then Sydney. I actually prefer that beach to Bondi. Have a great rest of your trip Gabe

There mainly St Kilda in Mel whereas Syd has hundreds of beaches. Unfortunately Gabe went to most over hyped hated by locals i.e. Bondi. Only that straight stretch where Gabe moved around from Swanson st to St Kilada is there curated preserved segment for tourists. But Syd has natural harbour & abundance of nature of Mel.

I've drove from Melbourne, along the coast to Jervis Bay, to Canberra, Sydney, Gold Coast, ended in Brisbane. I think Melbourne is my favorite. ALL those Cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) are well worth a visit though. Sydney is BEAUTIFUL (almost sensory overload, it's so beautiful). Brisbane is really nice, and for me, seemed the best for families. But Melbourne and the state of Victoria in general are my favorites. Honestly, I can't say why I liked Melbourne more, I just did. It was very walkable. The CBD is not too big.
