Love everyone pointing out inconsistences, as far as I know it air force one is capable of in air refueling so that it can stay airborne indefinitely, even leaking fuel they werent leaking it fast enough to not be able to mid air refuel all the way back to the US to land on an emergency runway.

Even if their tanker hadn't been blown up, or they could fly another to them in time, it would be virtually impossible for the president and the major to hold the plane steady enough to attempt a midair refueling. Not only are the 747's controls severely compromised, but they had already lost their #4 engine during the fight with the MIGs. A midair refueling is a precision mission that requires perfect control of both the refueler and the receiving aircraft.

@@SuperTrucker2019 I mean he says the controls are sluggish but it doesnt sound like the plane is totally uncontrollable and there has to be some sway in the boom so that it doesnt snap right off at the first bit of turbulence. Maybe it would have been risky but im not sure it couldnt be done, even if they could have hooked up for 5 or 10 minutes it would have made the transfer from plane to plane a bit less pressing.

@@stevensanderson2817 It would be VERY risky, to put it mildly. The only other thing I could think of that might improve the odds would be shutting off the #1 engine to equalize the thrust. But all this is academic, unless there had just happened to be another refueling aircraft flying close enough to reach them in time. But this is Hollywood, so ya never know......😃😃

Because the 747's maneuvering capability is too damaged, and they're also losing fuel. It is highly unlikely, with their #4 engine down and their controls compromised, that Marshall and the Major would be able to hold the 747 steady enough to attempt an in-flight refueling. Besides, AFO's tanker was blown up earlier in the film.
