Piers hit the nail on the head when he mentioned that the more we talk about mental health the more issues we have. How about we teach our kids that life is good and bad at the same time. When it’s good enjoy it, and when it’s bad get through it because tomorrow is another day and it may be good tomorrow or maybe it won’t be, but either way keep pushing forward. The other important thing to teach children is to be kind and treat people the way you want to be treated.

Thank you! I'm 25 and seems as though EVERYONE sees a therapist weekly. I don't disregard mental health at all but somehow people are convinced that if something happened to them or is bothering them then they are broken and need to be fixed ASAP. For example I have a friend who is very scared of seeming "lazy" so she over works. We know and acknowledged that it comes from a time when her mentally ill mom was bed ridden and was dependent on their fanily and abused her position and once she rests she feels as though she resembles her mom. But thanks to her hard work my friend is a med student, so is it really THAT bad of a thing, now that we understand it and can work on it? People who thrived in one field always struggled in another, that's just life. People always had trouble. I blame social media and instant gratification for these as well because otherwise I don't see why anyone would think that they are the only ones who struggle with something, that they need to be perfect in every aspect and of course the lack of patience to any process these days is so apparent.

@@NK-bz9wb I’m glad you found my little piece of advice helpful, as far as the friends you have who all think they need mental help from professionals then I’d advise them to read: “The Myth of Mental Illness” by Thomas Szasz, who is a psychoanalytic psychiatrist. Obviously physical bullying was a different matter, but the best way to deal with words is to ignore it. Teaching kids to go into meltdown because some other kid calls them a word, only feeds the bully as that is what they do it for. Everyone is bullied in some way throughout life but their won't always be someone to run to. Knowing how to deal with it is a far better approach and is far more successful in a very quick time! Teaching kids that they are victims is dangerous and leads to an inability to deal with any problem life throws at them and encourages them to be obsessed with their 'mental health'. We need to STOP bringing awareness to everything. Why do we want happy children thinking about mental health problems? So, they can have a down day and then think they have depression? So, they can feel nervous about sports day and think they have anxiety? So, they decide not to wear a dress to school and think they are transgender? When I was a kid, I didn’t even know what anxiety or depression was? And I grew up happy. I was a very angry kid and definitely emotional, but I had a healthy relationship with emotions because I knew they were temporary. When you teach children about chronic mental illness, you make them believe their issues can last forever. We are unintentionally poisoning the innocent minds of children, with negative thoughts and problems too great for them. Why should we teach children to actively think about and notice racism? So suddenly their peers that they saw as the same as them are now highlighted as different? Do you know how ludicrous it sounds to expect that approach to bring people TOGETHER? We are actively teaching children to see each other as different. STOP BRINGING AWARENESS TO EVERYTHING. World issues are kept alive by us continually speaking them into existence.

I completely agreee. I'm 20 and have been diagnosed with depression since i was 13, due to many reasons - though I have always been tought to ignore people's comments and ignorance because if you don't let the words hurt you, then the bully/attackers have no weapon to use against you. I use that day-in-day-out because like Piers said 'the world is mean' and it's due to this mentality that I won't actively try to kill myself despite the fact I don't want to be here most days. Children and young people are tought the truth of the adult world way too early now, I mean when I was 8, I was playing out with my friends screaming insults at eachother and having fun - because that's what kids do, they're blunt, mean and have no filter with what comes out of their mouths, but that's what makes the children grow, they learn not to talk like that because it's rude and disrespectful and it makes these children grow into polite and respectable people when they reach adulthood and are forced to face the brutality that is the real-adult world. What this Woke culture is promoting in young people is disobedience and rudeness as well as a lack of respect. I mean there is only a couple of years between me and my younger brother, but he's got absolutely no respect for anyone, he hates when people argue back with him, if he loses he throws a complete tantrum and baring in mind he's nearly reaching adulthood himself, he can dish out insults and bad language, but the minute someone is mean/hurtful to him, he pulls out the victim card, and tries to make himself out like he did nothing wrong. We are going down a road in which the world will be sensitive due to the amount of awareness we are forcing upon these children. And the only thing this teaches is if people think they are/have something then it must be true. But the issue lies with people self-diagnosing themselves with mental health problems, then it will get to the point where your body is going to react to what you are telling yourself by giving you the signs of anxiety, depression, etc just because you are trying to trick yourself and your body into thinking you have these mental health condition. All we are doing with this mentality is aiding the suicide rate in children and young people by shoving adult-problems onto people far too sensitive to handle them.
@therebornnewb0980 Жыл бұрын
Hard agree on this, and i would like to add that the problem with world issues is that many adults today are too immature to acknowlege things like systematic racism, corporate starvation, and demographically charged segregation. More grown-ups need to teach their kids real life to become better individuals who can make a difference in a life that has ups and downs. The real world
@Ad1nfernum Жыл бұрын
That's building resilience in kids. I was bullied all through school, even to the degree of what would now be labelled criminal physical assault. While I wouldn't wish my childhood on anyone, the point does still stand that you get through it and are more resilient because of it. Many, many people overcome childhood adversity and grow into very strong and capable adults. But we're not seeing that now - our kids should feel safe and loved and supported, because we emphasize giving children all of those things, but they also need some struggle in order to build resilience. They need to be able to make some of their own decisions and take on the risk of failure from those decisions. Failure is what makes kids grow. I did exceedingly well in school, but socially was where I failed, and it taught me more useful lessons than I got from always succeeding in academics. I wouldn't have learned those lessons if my parents had taken the place of friends instead or if they'd organized playdates for me. I had to figure it out myself and that was the best thing for me. Kids can't learn and grow if parents are always stopping them from ever failing at anything.

While words can hurt...being lied to is so much worse. If someone were to be honest and YOU CHOOSE to take it the wrong way, you are making that choice. The 5 people next to you might not care, are not fazed by the comment, or they find it funny and all because of how THEY CHOOSE to take it. Free speech should not be silenced just because the minority (and it is the minority) got hurt feelings that they can actually recover from if they are willing to MAKE THE CHOICE to put in the effort to learn how to move past it and not let one comment from someone control them. Lies should be shut down instead. This woman claiming that Piers not liking what Meghan said shows clearly how words can hurt is barking up the wrong tree. Meghan said hurtful lies, not hurtful truths. Meghan LIED and many brought it hook line and sinker which makes them gullible in that situation.

What a horribly shallow unempathetic view you and other commenters have on this very basic subject. Kids can't wrap their little undeveloped brains around not letting others words have power. It’s immature logic to believe that we can ever “train” kids to be mature and never be mean or pick on other kids; society can’t be made into an utopia. Does this mean that we shouldn’t teach of kids manners; respect and to be good citizens? Obviously not, but even adults aren’t perfect. They're basically babies still trying to form a self image and personality and they take cues from how the world views them and if their tiny world they live in is mostly negative then they will be deeply damaged and hurt. Just think about this topic a little longer and don't just think about how you dealt with it because maybe you had a better home life and maybe you weren't called names for years and years and no one wanted to be friends with you.
