Lyle was one of truly great unsung heroes of jazz piano. He did not get as much recognition as some of the other great jazz pianists that were solo artists or band leaders, like Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea. He was a great composer, along with Pat Metheny, and a phenomenal performer. I was fortunate to see him in concert with the PMG 5 or 6 times over past 41 years. I met Lyle with the PMG in 1976-1977. Mike Metheny was my arranging professor at the Berklee College of Music. He recommended I go see his brother’s quartet. It was a small intimate club and we got there so early we helped them bring their instruments and equipment into the club. They pulled up in a van with NO roadies. They were amazing .. Lyle was a beautiful nerdy genius with an AMAZING GIFT. I will MISS HIM ..

Dear Michael and fellow fans of Lyle and Pat : I happened to be looking at Google this morning on my phone , and saw the news of Lyles passing . As many of you , I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news . I immediately called the Journalist who published the Article and expressed what Lyle and the Pat Matheny group meat to me . As I talked , the tears welled up and started running down my face ... Want to know how far reaching of an impact Lyle and Pat has ? I am a African American musician from the ' not so nice part of town ' here in New York . I was only in my early twenties. and beginning to become seriously involved with music . In 78 ' the Pat Matheny group came out with their self titled album . While sitting in my living room listening to WRVR the citys Jazz station of the time - they played "Jaco " ( who I would have the opportunity to meet and talk to years later ) . No one had heard anything like that man : The chords and pharsing of Pat's dreamy guitar work , against the lush backdrop of Lyles incredible playing . No one up to that point had used piano , synthesizers , and other keyboards with such a sonic palette like that ; absolutely beautiful . The entire album was the bomb , and would set the bar high for other jazz / fusion groups to measure up to. . Lyle and Pat would continue to set the standard for beautiful complex music that not only touched the head - but the heart . Picture young black musicians in the "hood " grooving and listening to the Pat Matheny group alongside Parliament/Funkadelic : Places like Baltimore Maryland - which would give us other to be great musicians like Dennis Chambers , Gary Grainger and others . Pat and Lyle were the first people to integrate world music into the Jazz idiom . Just listen to " It's for you " and other great music that they wrote . Many don't know that Pat played gigs with people like Chris ' Daddy ' Dave from Mint Condition / Robert Glasper , and Meshell endeochello , the neo soul / jazz movement that has become so popular today . Lyle and Pat heard us man .... Supported us . Took musicians from around the world with them ; showed the beauty of togetherness 👫👬👭👨👩👧👦👨👩👦👦👨👩👧👧👨👦👨👦👦👨👧 I mourn this great loss with each of you . 😪 Tom Maynard , Brooklyn East New York

Lyle's music could touch places in my heart I didn't know was there. His music made me think deeply and feel deeply the things that words are unable to describe. There was a quality of wistfulness, achingly beautiful and sublime gorgeousness of ways his music touched so many. I grew up in the 70's listening to every album and saving up to buy each one that came out with Lyle and Pat Metheny and later on Lyle's solo albums. His music is the kind that I wish I could have composed because it is that awe inspiring.

the greatness of Lyle Mays and his gigantic musical legacy that leaves us in this world will surely be like an endless river. the greatness of his piano technique (and also keyboards), his style in my way of seeing unique in class, sensitivity and positivity in his choices of notes and chords, his musical taste more generally and last but not least, indeed perhaps first, his "sound", the unmistakable the lyle mays sound for me, the only brand of his playing, make him a musical giant that has indelibly marked a lot of excellent quality music from the 70s to today. if Pat has lost a friend and brother, the world has lost a gigantic artist of the keyboard, sound and musical atmospheres that bring joy to the soul. thanks for everything Lyle.

Nice tribute. I feel the same about Lyle and the music he and Pat created that you mentioned. I don't believe anyone will equal that, and I don't believe Pat could have done that himself. In a recent interview he did, he hardly even mentioned Lyle. On many songs I cringe when I know Pat's synthesizer guitar is going to start blaring and wreck an otherwise incredible and beautifully crafted tune. I first saw PMG on the Offramp tour. I vividly remember when they started "Are you Going With Me" that there was no one playing the foundation part of the song...and it hit me that it was digitally recorded. Lyle was not only an extraordinary musician and performer, but he used technology to enhance his music in a way few others have.

They showed us a 16mm film in our science class called "The Search For Solutions" Pat Metheny did the film score taken from the American Garage Album in 79. I loved the song but had no idea who played it. 5yrs ago I decided to look for it on the internet. I only new the name of the Film and that it was produced by Phillip petroleum. Using those key words and spending an hour going thru several websites, i finally found a small clip of the film that had the song. I used Shazam to tell me the name of the song and the Artist. To my surprises I had heard of Pat Metheny Group. They did the film score for "The Falcon and The Snow man" which i had the CD. RIP Lyle Mays

Mournful day - Metheny proclaims Mays to be amongst the greatest musicians he's known. IMO, not the peers of the the most formidable jazz pianists of the modern post-bop era; but undoubtedly the instantly recognisable Metheny Group aesthetically sound is perhaps the greatest fusion sound alternative to the conventional one: Lyle May's 'Americana' visionary is instrumental to this identity that transformed the improvisatory setting from an often relatively claustrophobic studio soundscape to that of rolling fields and landscapes. RIP: Lyle Mays

An incredible musician, I had the pleasure to meet him once at the Miami Night Center back in 86 during a tour with the Pat Metheny Group. I congratulated him on his first solo album which it meant so much to me. At the time, I was having a hard time trying to find my way, but there was this special music and especially this song "Close To Home," although it didn't have words, it still had some melancholic melody that was so beautiful... and it did opened up my mind where I was able to go deep within myself and allowed me to mediate. At the end of the concert all of them came out and before going to Pat, I went straight to Lyle since I wanted to tell him what his album meant to me. He was pleased to find that there actually were people who really paid attention to his composing. One of the most precious things about Lyle was his incredible crystal sense of melody..... trait impossible to replicate which is why is so special. R.I.P Lyle, I will always remember you and your music.....really changed the way I listen to music.

seeing Lyle perform over the years was truly a bonus to being a PMG fan and no other modern composer was more dedicated to his art and passion. Will always cherish "The Way Up' live and how much that concert will always mean to me!

I played a gig with his niece Aubrey at WMU way back in the day. Lyle has been and still is my favorite pianist ever....he and Metheny were a perfect match.
