After the passing of Kirk Douglas at the ripe age of 103 earlier this year, Olivia de Havilland may have been last one left of Hollywood's Golden Age. Imagine having played in arguably the most famous and successful movie of all times, Gone With The Wind and still be alive - *eighty* years later! Alas, this gracious screen legend has now passed too. But her movies and talent remain timeless.

We have Angela Lansbury Marsha Hunt (104) Nehemiah Pershoff (102) Margaret O' Brian(sp) June Lockhart Kim Novak and a few others but they are sadly leaving us with their forever memories today's Hollywood cannot hold a candle to the true stars of the Golden age of Hollywood.

She nailed this role. It would have been so easy to make Melanie 2-dimensional but she was able to give her depth with such subtleness.

I just watched "Gone With the Wind" again and was deeply moved by the character of Melanie because she was a true lady and a true Christian--someone who showed love, compassion and forgiveness to everyone even if they didn't deserve it. That's what we need to strive to be like.
@maryk4465 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Also, Melanie was born to wealth and could have easily just been a shallow society lady. But she was not spoiled and she strove for virtue. We could see it when she told Scarlett that no, she wasn't tired taking care of the wounded soldiers because they could all be Ashley. Also, she didn't have any self-righteousness in her. Look how kind she was to Belle Watling, despite what Belle did for a living. And what woman would ever give up her wedding ring for any cause? To me Melanie was a lot like Dorothea Brooke in the novel "MIddlemarch."

Me too! I love every movie that Olivia acted in. GONE WITH THE WIND is EPIC for sure! I never get tired of watching it. Yes; she was a true Christian like Ginger Roger was and quite a few movie stars from the GOLDEN ERA of HOLLYWOOD. I will meet her face to face in heaven when it's my turn to go. Of course, I look forward to meeting Jesus face to face first! To be present with the Lord is the fullness of joy; it is written. The historical events that Olivia lived to see from a young girl to a beautiful senior citizen are mind-boggling to me! Now she is face to face with her Lord of all; having known that HISstory is true from beginning to end. NO END for her at all but rather a new beginning, with no end; eternal life; thanks to having become a born again Christian.

I feel so sad! However, know that the second Olivia'sd heart stopped; she was with Jesus Christ in her FOREVER home; in Heaven. Born again Christian that I know I'll meet when it's my turn to leave this earth. What a day of rejoicing that will be.

I am a man I was born in 1976 I saw Olivie de Havilland for the first time in the movie Captain Blood from 1935. Her appearance in the film was not only the appearance of an excellent actress but also an amazing beautiful girl when she was 19 years old she was young and beautiful actually hypnotized me You can it was possible to fall in love with her without memory at first sight. This film, due to her amazing beauty, not only spiritual, but also beauty, was deep in the mine mind. As soon as the news of her death appeared, I immediately remembered her actor creation in this film. Olivio died for the world I can only write rest in peace for me and for many other fans who love your by film creations you will live forever and you will always remain in our memory Robert from Poland

Always remember that when every other actress in the world wanted to play Scarlett O’Hara, Olivia de Havilland was the only one who wanted to play Melanie. If you think about it, she’s giving you some good life advice there.

She acted to perfection in The Snakepit, eh? Then again she acted to perfection with every role she got during the GOLDEN AGE Hollywood. She was a gentle spirit REAL LADY; but also strong when she had to be. A well-balnced human being.

I feel sad too! Yet she had a long life on this earth. Silly, eh? I feel like I've lost a family;y member over her passing on. I have a movie with her in it; ready to watch. I pray I don't end up crying all the way through it; knowing a bright and shinning STAR has left us.

@LeslieGMN4 жыл бұрын
@Claire Salmonson I agree, but the sword wasn’t Ashley’s. It had been Melanie’s father’s, and then passed down to her brother Charles. His son Wade then inherited it, but Wade was left out of the movie.

Reviewers speak of her as almost saintly, as if sancity were weakness. But Melanie was a saint, and her willingess to use the sword was a sign of a strength that armed her against whatever foe attacked her and hers. No actress ever radiated such joy.
@stefanmakara3733 жыл бұрын
@@JRobbySh Agreed, I mean several Christian saints were also warriors. Being willing to use a sword to protect her own doesn't take away from her great character.
