Incredible story pal, I found a pre 64 model 70 in a pawn shop in 1998 had it for probably 7 years before I sold it. I still cant find a rifle that groups as well as that rifle did. Could put 3 in a quarter at 100 yards and I've sold and traded many firearms over the years and that is the one I regret selling the most. I have a 700 in 30-06 that shoots pretty well but that model 70 was still the best.

@@EnkeiTenjin not really, an 06 will take a brown bear cleanly with proper shot placement. But when dealing with an animal that can eat you a 375 h&h would be better suited. I want to establish what I base my opinion on; I began hunting at age 12. My first rifle was a surplus 30/40 Kraig. After a couple of years, I acquired a .300 Savage in a model 99. These guns served me well, and put meat on the table. When I was 16, I bought my first 30-06, a Springfield 03 that had been remade into a sporting rifle. That year, I began shooting on a rifle team, and within a year made expert, with the same 30-06. I have hunted in five different states, I have taken everything from coyote to black bear, all with a 30-06. I am 71 now and still hunt when I can, mostly in Idaho and Washington state. I do hunt with other calibers, such as the 6.5 Creedmoor, which I took a nice white tail buck with two years ago. I primarily hunt with a 25-06 these days, for no other reason then I like the caliber. My point is this, there is nothing the "06 can not safely and humanly dispatch inside 500 yards in north America. It is a manageable round recoil wise for 99 percent of hunters. It is very accurate with a wide variety of bullet weights. It is available in most any action you wish, from semi auto to single shot. The 30-06 case is the parent case for many of the modern "race" cartridges. If all hunting was to be done with one round, hands down, it would be the 30-06.
@JuanGarcia-ig4zl2 жыл бұрын
@@Lure-Benson dude his point was that the 06 is capable in the hands of an ethical responsible hunter. He never said it was best. I agree with him. And what are you doing putting yourself in harms way on a river full of brown bears? Have some respect. Your arrogance is over flowing.

Life is interesting. The first centre-fire rifle I acquired, about 35 years ago was a .270, so I never saw the need for a 30-06. That said, whenever someone asks for a recommendation for a "general purpose" hunting rifle (north-central British Columbia) I always recommend a 30-06. Deer, moose. elk, caribou, goats, sheep and bear... the 30-06 is great for them all.

I was using a Hornady 143 grain precision hunter. The buck hit the ground and crawled off resulting in a long brutal death paralyzing the buck. I asked the Lord and the buck to forgive me for such a brutal death and vowed to make sure my rifle was sighted in. After getting the deer to the butcher I realized once he was skinned I placed a perfect behind the shoulder shot the bullet missing all vitals as if it rotated between the skin and ribcage and exiting the spine. Not sure if this is a magic bullet but it missed all the vitals and put a new meaning to the jfk magic bullet theory. The butcher never seeing a shot like that I cant help but think it was the 6.5 and ill be using my ole 3006 180 core lokt. I'd love to find a winchester model 70 30-06. Or another x bolt in 30-06.

After WWI our Army found that the "boat tail bullet of WWI was exceding most of the safety limits of the Military ranges in the U.S.A. (LOL!), so they got rid of the "boat tail". One cannot really extoll the greatness of this round, without the inculding the great legacy of the 1903 Springfield rifle. It's durabilty, simplicity, fantastic balance, accuracy, noticeable lighter weight than the M1, beauty and improvement upon the mauser action (especially the ability to release and recock the firing pin by the knob behind the bolt, while the bolt is fully locked in place). Also it was the round for the super successful Browning machine gun, the B.A.R.. It's like my 1896 hohner harmonica, the company has never been able to find another type of diatonic (and reduce the tunings etc.) to get rid of it as a steady top seller. Like Coke tried to change the basic formula for it's cola in 1986. Hohner like allot of old fashioned companies that provided a basic good product out of SERVICE have become Large corporations that are all about huge profits and no service. Hohner is a "Group" (Large corp), it's unstated motto is "The Group of Greed!"

Great video Most under rated cartridge on the planet. Not to mention 175 grain boat tail holding momentum better than any other. and the angle on front of bullet making it hydroplane fighting gravity To be long range King.. That is why the 50 cal was designed after it. And when I shoot against my buddies 300 Winchester mag at long range . His cracks going sub sonic . My 30 06 does not LOL The 30 06 has got PUNCH

I have a 1903 Springfield made in February of 1907 serial No. 273272 re-barreled in at the Springfield Armory in August of 1918 and I've had this rifle sence I was 17 . It will go to my oldest son when I pass and I'm 61 now. God bless the 30.06.

I’m a cartridge snob. I like the weird stuff. However, I’ve got more 30-06’s than anything else. From hogs to moose, it just delivers. From 22” to 26” barrels, Brownings to Sako’s, choose the rifle that gets your juices flowing and gets you over the mountain or across the cedar swamps. But, remember, if that rifle is chambered for the 30-06 you won’t be wrong.

I was weaned on a .303 WWI Lee Enfield because my dad bought it at an army surplus for $15. The first rifle I bought out of my allowance money for university was a .30-06 Winchester. I'm with you on the .30-06 & trust me, I speak from experience. I took that rifle wherever I went teaching throughout Norther Canada & shot walrus, seals, wolves, caribou, big horns, buffalo & plenty of moose including the odd rabbit which I carefully beheaded. I use a Tikka 3 now & really like it. Personally, I like the Winchester XP3 on every level. Winchester stopped production on them, damn shame.

I couldn't agree more! My old 06 is good old friend that never says no! From 150 to 220 grain bullets, neck sized and with my pet powders, I've never lost a deer, hog or bear! I'm not trying to brag on my shooting ability, but I've never missed and have never required a follow up shot. Very humane cartridge!!! If you'll do your part, it'll never let you down and will fill your freezer! Great job on your presentation!

Up until recently, I would agree with you as I have taken black bears 2016 2017 2018 the first at age 74 with a Benelli R1 30-06. Having recently acquired a Ruger M77 Hawkeye African in 9.3x62, I find it equally as capable. That round was created in 1905. Good choices both.

Picked up recently an older model Remington Sportsman 78, my first 30-06. Been to the range once so far with it to sight in the scope and I gotta say, I am hooked! Once dialed in, man the groupings are tight. Awesome gun that didn't break the bank. Actually got a heck of a good deal on it, sling, bipod, scope and a box of ammo, overall good condition for the gun, $250 for it all. Yup, I am happy. :)

The late Colonel Jeff Cooper used to say about shooting, "If you can't do it with 180 at 2800, then you probably can't do it" He was talking about a 180-grain bullet fired at 2800 fps from a 30-06 rifle. If you had to pick one center-fire rifle cartridge to do it all, it would be hard to top the venerable 30-06. It is the most-popular long-action center-fire cartridge in the world - and with good reason. There's virtually nothing it won't do - and do well.

The wide range of .30 caliber bullets; in weights, profiles and construction, together with a well-designed case, have made the ‘06 a real winner. Don’t know if others have thought:: “I could probably get by just fine and cover all of my hunting with a .22 rimfire, my 30-06 and a 12 gauge shotgun.”

I love the 30-06. It is without doubt, of, if not the most, versatile round out there. However, I would put the .280 Remington very close on it's heels. The 7mm has nearly as wide a range of bullets available as the 06, which means you can get a bullet of equal weight, sitting on the same powder charge, and get better ballistic performance out of it. But still, I agree that the 30-06 is still King.

Great upload , in my opinion you have just hit the nail on the head. There are hundreds of calibres out the they are mostly all good but none are better or more versatile than the good old 30-06 springfield. I can buy a box of 180gr ammo and go to the bushveld where shooting distances usualy vary from 50m to 200m ,shoot a kudu without causing unnecessary excessive meat damage usually caused by the faster calibres ,then travel to the Kalahari and shoot gemsbuck and springbuck at distances varying from 200m to 400m without any problems . Why would anyone ever need anything else?

I LOVE my Ruger M77 .30/06!! When 17yrs old, It was the first hi-powered rifle that I bought - and that's over 33yrs ago now. I've shot heaps of goats, pigs, foxes and plenty of African PG - impala, warthog, kudu, wildebeeste etc etc - and even sharks!! My daughter now uses it - taking African PG and her 100pt NT buffalo with it. Its just a superb round - BAR NONE!! 👍

The additional diameter of the 30 cal bullet allows heavier bullets to be used without surpassing the ability of the rifling to stabilize them. This is one reason I use a 30-06 with bullets up to 180 grain and then use a .35 Whelen for heavier bullets 200, 225, and 250 because even though the .35 Whelen has a slower twist rate it does not require such a fast twist to stabilize the 358 bullet.

Probably the fifth time I watched this video, IMHO it is probably the best most concise video on the 30.06 on You Tube. You can load it up and load it down with powder and bullet grains. I can shoot varmint, deer or bear. I wish somebody would take a 30.06 and make a video where they do load it up and load it down and show just how good it is.

First time I've seen your channel. I like your presentation style, casual but obviously well-informed and impartial. Very well done. I have, in storage at a friend's home in my home state of PA, (I've been living in Thailand for the past 20 years) an original 1903 Springfield, made at the Springfield plant, serial number in the 880k range, meaning it was made AFTER the introduction of the double-heat-treating process. I hope I live long enough to make another trip home so I can sell it, as I have no son to leave it to. It was carried through the German campaign by my stepfather, who retired as a CSM. He brought home 3, and gave this one to me for my 16th birthday (I'm 64). I totally stripped it once, and gave it a 'surgical' level cleaning, and re-linseeded the stock. Action is tighter than a bank-vault, (carried a lot, shot a little) and yet slick as wet ice. It even still has the cylindrical cleaning kit in the stock. If I can make it home, I hope I can find someone to give me an honest appraisal of it's value. Great vid, thanks for sharing!

My first bolt action rifle was a .270 Winchester. Choose that mostly because it was a family tradition. When I started helping a hunting pal hand load for 3006, it became apparent that that was the best option for an all around North American hunting rifle. I now own 3 rifles in 3006. I tell everyone to get a 3006 for their first hunting rifle.

The legendary ought-six is venerated over on this side of the pond too. My go-to deer rifle is my 30-06, it'll drop wild boar in their tracks just as easily as it stops a red deer. I couldn't agree with you more. I have the .30-06, .308 Win., .375 H&H Mag and the .45-70. I think the most efficient bullet weights for the .308 Win is a range of 150 grs-165 grs. The 180 gr, I think is too heavy for the powder and because of that creates unnecessary chamber pressures. The ideal weight range for the .30-06 would be 165 grs-180grs. A 180 gr. Sierra SPBT sitting on top of 59 grs of Superformance Powder is incredible. For even more energy the Winchester Staball 6.5 powder would be the ticket. Energy with this powder is north of 3100 ft/lbs. at the muzzle. However, I would be mindful of accuracy above energy. More energy doesn't mean more accuracy. Long live the .30-06.

I don’t own a 30 06 but I think your right! It probably is America’s cartridge and rightly so, at least for the last hundred years. I started out at 12 with a 270 and so my next cartridge had to be bigger than 3006 but I’ve always marveled at the versatility and the range of bullet weights that the century old cartridge could handle. Cheers

Try a slower burning powder for the heavier bullets. Faster powders like 4895 and 4064 don't do as well with bullets over 168gr. I like 4350 and 4831sc for the 180s and 200s.
