Sorry, the Laura Bennett Art shirt I wore really combines with the guitar’s pinstripes and does a number on our visual senses. Hope no one got dizzy. 🤣

Mike, did you ever make a video that shows all your beautiful guitars? If I'm not mistaken......I think you did? I'm so busy that I can't remember or keep track of YT vids. But you have the most prestigious collection! You deserve every one too! Thanks Mike. Peace.

Cool video here. That's one of my fave VH songs. I am a semi beginner on guitar (I play bass primarily). I just ordered a Positive Grid Spark amp and I saw that you had made a review for it a while back. Very informative and entertaining. I wanted to ask, do you plan to make a video on the Spark app features that you left out on that first video? Also, what is your opinion on the Spark now? Do you still have it/use it? Last, have you tried the new mini Spark amp? If so, what're your thoughts? Thanks.

a tip for people trying to learn EVH solos, timing and feel is everything! just because you read the tabs and know all the notes, doesn’t mean you “can play” it. there is always more nuance than you think. use tab in conjunction with ear training (slowing the original track/isolated track down), tab can’t always teach you timing
@jasonrestoule91752 жыл бұрын
You are correct! Learning the notes is the easy part, it sometimes takes me weeks to have a Eddie solo finally fall into place. Finding that groove is magical LOL.

I disagree. Having the tabs is really all you need to be able to play whatever song you want. Especially the older Van Halen solos.

@@angels77100 You must come from the Vernon Reid school of guitar playing. All flash, no feel.
@JustAdude2912 жыл бұрын
@@angels77100 disagree, just because you have the tab, doesn't mean you understand the timing, phrasing and all the little nuances. Using a tab and using your ear in conjunction is the best option for learning a song, especially a Van Halen song.

Just remember, a huge part about EVH's playing: he played for the fun of it and not for 100% accuracy. I still learn the tabs to the T, but youre allowed to improvise

Hey, I found this quite interesting. I didn’t realise what was happening in the second speaker. No I do thank you for pointing that out, I am a blind musician that’s been playing for quite a few years now, I’ve always found Van Halen to be a bit intimidating, but I’m gonna have a go With learning this using that, and instead of the one that everyone else knows, keep on rocking!
@zachlewis97512 жыл бұрын
I think this video came out a year too late for it to apply to me, but I am pretty sure given a day of practicing that I could play it a year ago. That being said, anyone who's just now learning or thinking about learning, start now. The first few months I could play that and barely a year later I could play it in 20 minutes of learning and practice. The only way to make guitar playing easier is to have experience with it, and that comes from starting ASAP.

A lot of his stuff isn’t real hard to play decently. It can be difficult to nail his tones and phrasing, but playing a perfectly passable solo is well within most intermediate players skill level. What he did that was most difficult was inventing a whole style.
@wm-nu1yf2 жыл бұрын
I always thought the same thing. Van Halen never played stuff the same way every time. Trying to play everything note for note with every nuance wouldn't be easy, but it isn't too difficult to play a convincing approximation of what he was doing for most of his solos. I always liked his rhythm playing better than his solos and some of the rhythm parts he played are more tricky to get right. His brilliance was more that he played stuff differently than most people had at that time.

Okay, it's a different song and I don't mean to hijack, but I think you might be able to answer the question. In "Wall of Sleep" by the Smithereens, there is the end of the solo where the guy is whacking two strings back and forth, almost in the same key but not quite. Can you explain how this sound is achieved on a separate video? Again, I am not trying to hijack your post.

I think it should be said for the beginners that early VH songs are not even in Eb tuning! You generally need to tune your guitar per song by ear if you want to play along the record. All I want to say it's pointless to tune your guitar down if you are just learning the song. BTW, it's not only VH who did that and it's really frustrating if you want to play along the tracks.
@TheArtofGuitar2 жыл бұрын
Beginners just shut off when I get that specific.

@RoRo-vr6wx2 жыл бұрын
Exactly
@chemax792 жыл бұрын
It's not easy to play cleanly like Eddie, most people on youtube i've seen play it with butchered timing, half of the notes blend together so it's just sounds like a mess and not triplets at all, sure it's easy just to tap your finger fast, but if your hands are not synchronized it sounds terrible
@john23572 жыл бұрын
It’s a huge misconception that the Eruption tapping is easy. The beginning sure, but when he does the descending pattern it’s extremely challenging to play cleanly. It is not an easy solo at all
