I'm on a strong dose of legal Canadian cannabis edibles to ring in my eve of Christmas morning. All is normal on a screen when I dip out to brew a delicious pot of coffee from my Netherlands made Moccamaster drip brewer. I get lost in the aroma of the grinding beans. I settle into the comforting process of filling the reservoir. My expectations of this delicious experience rise to a crescendo... To turn back to the TV to see a nightmare boi at eye level trying to obtain his first soul. I laughed for a hella long time. Haven't you done well editors, haven't you done well ;b

I accept its flaws but it has always been my quintessential Christmas film (and the soundtrack is also incredible, Alan Silvestri just captures the Christmas sound for me perfectly). The ambiance in this movie is awesome. It gets quite loud sometimes, but it also goes really quiet. I love the kids running around the North Pole, you know when you see a movie really late at the shopping mall, and when it's over you have to make your way out past the deserted corridors and closed stores and it's unusually silent, not at all the way it looked when you arrived? It's got those vibes.

no, i'll tell you what it is. basically anytime the movie focuses on something that isn't the uncanny humans, its good. because everything else, the effects, the snow, the animals, the dynamic shots, the train itself, are all phenomenal and then you get to the humans....and it all falls apart.

If you, like me, don't care much for Polar Express, but watched it again because of this commentary, I highly recommend doing what I just did for fun. Thanks to the boys for the fun fact that this studio and Zemeckis also made BEOWULF. If you want to experience some SEVERE tonal whiplash, watch Beowulf directly after this. The contrast between technological and mature advancement between the two films is nuts. One scene in particular is cool because it's a reused idea from Polar Express, a one take camera shot following something an eagle picks up. But instead of a ticket, we end up following a dead rat to something...horrific. Anyway, watch Beowulf. Highly underrated flick.

The book is so good but short because it’s a children’s book. So they had to add a lot of stuff to pad the movie run time. That plus the uncanny valley animation makes the movie less charming for me.
