Hey Laura, I just made one of these today (with a little modifying) to suit it fitting in the back of my van. I can't believe it's possible to make such a solid bed from a single sheet of 30mm ply. It's nice knowing I have something I can add a headboard to later on when I move back into an apartment, and there was just enough scrap to make 12 door wedges to sell + a coffee table attachment for the bed. Thanks for your inspiration!

I like this design very much! No screws, just gravity and a few dowels. I like it because it's modular. You can easily swap out any part for a new one quickly. You can change the entire headboard if you want it to be taller, or at a different angle. You could build different bases (taller or wider or both) if you want to add some storage under the bed. You could add bedside tables; make a horizontal arm from the same size board as the stiles, attach a small tabletop to it with dowels, and cut a slot into the headboard to slide the table arm in from the front. Or, you could make an L-shaped arm for the table, and attach it by adding notches to the stiles. You could add a footboard using the same design as the headboard. Does the headboard slide backward when you lean against it? You might need to add shallow notches to the stiles to keep the headboard in one spot. They would only need to be 5mm or 10mm deep, just enough to keep the headboard from sliding backward. If you cut a sawtooth into the stiles, you could then adjust where the headboard stops, and each cut of the sawtooth could allow the headboard to rest at a different angle - steep, medium, shallow. SO many options with this design. Maybe Ikea will buy it from you!

Looks to be about 4" or so, certainly high enough to broom or Swiffer, maybe not high enough for a Roomba. If you were to change the dimension of the black boxes that hold the slats, you could certainly make it a bit higher, but will take a bit more plywood.

@JusBidniss4 жыл бұрын
As another big guy, who sleeps more comfortably in a 'recliner' position (back angled, butt lower down, knees slightly up, feet same height as knees), I'm wondering if this very excellent and stylish flat bed concept could be adapted to the shape of those recliner beds/chairs? Like maybe a bed of shorter straight slats (3 or 4 slat pieces to make 1 rib), with those shorter pieces overlapping and hinged by longer and larger-diameter dowels going left to right through holes in all the slats at the hinge points, so the bed of slats could be bent into the shape of the recliner as viewed from the side. May not be able to use the cross lap cuts joining to similar cuts on the black boxes, unless some way of making them able to work through the range of adjustment is figured out (like maybe half-holes in the bottom edges of the slats, and instead of black boxes, have trestle rails with the cross lap cuts in their top edges that would engage the half-circle cuts in the slats, with the trestles supported by adjustable-height leg assemblies?). Sounds like a design that would be a lot of fun to work out!
@raymondmcgee44914 жыл бұрын
I would think that the ribs wouldn't be an issue since the body weight is evenly distributed over them, much like the IKEA bed slats. Nice design

I realllly like this design. Since it's so simple, it leaves a lot of areas for customization. Like if you decide to make it a twin instead of a queen, you can make one of the base boxes longer than the other and build an end table that's built into the bed. Or if you're tired of the bed moving around on frame, make some taller boards for the edges and foot and drop them in to encase the bed.

Wow! Another amazing creation. Thank you for sharing it. I’ve got a couple of questions for you: Is it heavy? You used particle board/MDF and that’s usually a heavy material. And why didn’t you go horizontal with the base instead of vertical? It seems that the vertical base absorbs the weight placed on the mattress and causes it (the mattress) to lose its form when some lays on it, making the bed uncomfortable. I do love the simplicity of the design!

I used similar box joint construction on a perimeter frame and salvaged a tilt mechanism from an IKEA tilt storage bed frame for under mattress storage. But since I was moving around at the time, I made the frame members hollow beams for wight (solid plywood members can get heavy). And your design makes adding things like side tables easy. You could attach them like the head board.
