The Grass Roots started out as a folk band led by P.F. Sloan called The Grassroots (one word). After a couple of years, he was disappointed with the record company constantly pushing them toward hits and left. In 1968, producer/songwriter Steve Barri was given A&R control and was commanded to change the band's musical direction. The heavily R&B-flavored "Midnight Confessions" was the first result of the new musical direction, and it became a #1 record, and the hits came until 1972. And, if you like "Sooner Or Later", you'll also love "Temptation Eyes" and, i'm gonna keep mentioning it..."Midnight Confessions"! One more thing: Real Gone Music released a fantastic singles collection almost a decade ago. It's a highly recommended buy. It's also on the streaming platforms for those who prefer to stream or download music.
@cwby2854 Жыл бұрын
Sloan and Barri WERE the Grassroots.....Lou Adler of Dunhill Records wouldn't let them play live or tour and made them go out and find a band that could be the Grassroots....PF Sloan found a band from San Fran called the Bedouins with a lead singer named Willie Fulton....they didn't last long and went back home....then they found an LA group called the 13th Floor to be the GR but one guy was drafted and Rob Grill replaced him....most songs that are credited to Sloan and Barri were actually written by PF Sloan alone...but because he was a teenager Dunhill made him share writing credit with Steve Barri.....
@platterjockey Жыл бұрын
Yes. After Lou Adler sold his Dunhill label to ABC Records, Jay Lasker, who was co-owner of Dunhill, was made president of the combined ABC/Dunhill label, and handed A&R duties to Steve Barri. That's when the band changed their sound.@@cwby2854

To try to answer your question, Amber, while I have not done a deep dive into the subject my (failing) memory and love of music tells me you are almost surely correct, that the 70's were the golden age of horns in rock music! To give you a treat to test out the theory may I suggest the song "Hi-De-Ho" by Blood Sweat and Tears, a song featuring an organ, grand piano, horns galore, a harmonica solo, a killer bass line and a church gospel choir kicking in towards the end! This song has very strong albeit bittersweet memories for me. In August 1971 my good friend Bill picked me up at 7AM when I got off work at a 24-hr convenience store in NE Okla to go enroll him in KU law school. Bill was a drummer in a band I sometimes did vocals with. This song peaked at #9 in late July and was still getting lots of airplay on AM radio. It seemed like we heard it about once every hour on that round trip. We sang along with it many times that day and night. Sadly Bill passed away very young and his friends miss him. Every time I hear this song, I'm back in his Olds 442 doing about 75mph and singing about 100 mph! RIP Billy. See you again one day buddy. Thanks for playing this one.
