People have become so contentious about nonsense. My neighbor commits a code violation every single day of the week with his commercial vehicle in front of his yard. I'm not going to report him, because he's a working man who is supporting himself and employees several other people with his business. But when my friends come over, they tell me that I can call code enforcement on him. Why would I do that?

We need to go back to the days when snitches got stitches. There comes a point where backing regulations and laws is actually unjust and only serves to massage the egos of small, petty people and further the interests of the powerful. Someone ruin a good situation and makes someone's life deliberately hard just because they can by blabbing to the feds, they need to get clapped and shown how the law ain't a shield for shitty behavior.

The home and land is supposed to be your territory FIRST and capital second, and ONLY if you choose it to be! Linking one's home to capital was a very foolish thing to begin with! Same with everyone around him! . He has RAISED the value of his property not in terms of money, but in terms of natural survivability. We have become so out of touch that we care more about money than our stability and survivability. They would make his life harder because they "might" want to sell in the future... Food has become secondary to cash, but you CANNOT eat cash! He has food available when he needs it, they have possible cash in the future... he is FAR more secure than they are, because his focus is on getting what he needs to be healthy and thrive. They could choose to do the same and then their food costs would go down as well.....humans have been taught an upside down view of how life is to be lived. We could easily provide alot of food for ourselves, but then shun such and pay MORE for food while worrying about the value of our homes.... Gods, all other animals view their homes as a secure place to be safe from predators and the elements...we humans have made our homes so dry and well protective, yet we worry about their monetary value, not what they provide... then go after others for what they do with THEIR nests... even if it would benefit us by increasing our chances of survival, because we only focus on the dollar value.... He COULD very well INCREASE their survivability AND health! If they would only learn from him! ONE plant can produce up to 100 seeds, depending on the species.... how much free food could result from a few of his plants for the whole neighborhood if they focused more on survivability than on property values? They could create a very prosperous neighborhood, with well-fed children and older people, if they just stopped to take a good hard look at it rather than just complain. He could teach them all how to grow food, on their own property, and then everyone in that neighborhood, even the poorest, could eat wel!. They don't see the real value right in front of them, they've been dazzled by dollar signs. Imagine entire neighborhoods FILLED with free grown food, and even those without property could offer to weed a garden or somesuch for a few vegetables.... if this spread through an entire city, we'd be TEEMING with food! There would be enough for everyone in these neighborhoods, but when we only focus on "cold hard cash", that's all you have... and can only buy as much as you have... whereas with this, it would be a vast amount for FREE! How much do you think this would shave off people's food expenses? That the money could be freed up to be used for other things... there is great value in food gardens... if only people realized what was right in front of them! most people are Dependant on farmers outside the cities for food, but that could change if only people stopped planting useless grass and planted FOOD plants! Including berry bushes, and fruit trees! Nature gave us food for free, yes we have tweaked it over the years, but the point is that you can multiply all that food from the seeds of the plants, you DON'T have to go to the store and pay someone else for it! ... UNLESS you are foolish enough to buy Monsanto's and other GMO terminator seeds that don't produce beyond one generation.

I read through a lot of the comments below - it is clear some people do not bother to watch the entire vid b4 commenting - it is great that you have the support of the city board and most if not all of your immediate neighbors. A friend used to live in a community in Florida. One of her neighbors got "in trouble" for planting fruit trees in their front yard. My friend and a couple other neighbors went to bat for them, and the board backed off, did not make them cut the trees down. The board didn't even realize my friend was growing herbs and vegetables in her own front yard . . . couldn't tell that they were not "decorative" plants...

We have a poly tunnel taking up our entire front yard. The city came by last week and took some photos but haven't heard anything yet. I did my research first, and there is nothing in the zoning bylaw that explicitly prohibits "unheated protected agriculture" i.e. caterpillar tunnels or hoop houses within a residential food garden. However I am fully prepared to sit down with city officials to help them improve their urban agriculture bylaw, powerpoint in hand. We have a generational advantage as urban farmers pushing the envelope. Times are changing, baby boomers are retiring. There is a younger generation of city planners that is taking the reigns and they were schooled differently. They talk about urban greening initiatives, mixed-use zoning, food security and urban agriculture. We have to connect the dots for them.. with a smile.

West coast, Canada. Our city has Urban Food Garden and Chicken/Beekeeping bylaws, which is a good start. Despite the progressive bylaws, the only way we can operate is by engaging with our neighbors and running a tight operation. I've seen urban farmers literally chased out of town because (in my opinion) they were abrasive, in-your-face permaculture zealots who pissed off their neighbors. They farmed and worked really hard, just uphill.

I admire your work firstly. Secondly, I'm from South Africa, and in my knowledge, urban farming etc has been, or rather, has never been restricted by any laws "apart from a jealous neighbor who would complain". On the contrary, urban, an rural/residential farming is largely encouraged. The only real issue is space lol, because it's in your front or backyard, so you are limited by how much and what you can farm. I'm currently awaiting my 1st bell pepper harvest this year "and they're looking fantastic" I generally plant seasonal crops, so over the past 5 years, I've been experimenting a lot with what works best in terms of cost, produce and yield. Anyway, my pont is, I wish more people along with their respective cities, would embrace e the culture of urban farming. Keep up the good work

Nice to see you have a somewhat friendly local government, I've battled with code enforcement from my neighbor lady retaliating for my complaints about her barking dogs, I complained about her barking dogs, warned her over the fence one day that I was about to file another barking dog complaint on her, As I've had to do it before, she told me go ahead, she would just file a complaint on me, couple of days later come code enforcement showed up and she walked him down the fence in her yard pointing out trees hanging over the fence line, she said a limb had fallen off my tree into her yard. So they cited me, I had to get rid of several cars, and clean up, had to trim and take out trees @ 100's of $$$. turns out with further inspection that the limb was NOT from my tree but hers! Didn't matter she complained, even though she walked with the code enforcement officer in her yard and pointed out stuff while he took pictures over the fence, and talked with him for at least 10 minutes, when I asked him if she complained he told me he just "happened to be driving by" and noticed a dead tree in my yard ( tree was already scheduled to be removed) I called bullshit on his"just happened to be driving by" and he told me I could get the information if she complained ONLY with a "freedom of information request"!? There needs to be a law if someone wants to file a complaint they must do it "in written form and face to face in person directly to the party in complaint", no more secretly getting to bitch when it doesn't affect you directly, it would stop a lot of this complaining by people who have no legitimate complaint!!?

It sounds like Curtis approached the city with his ideas for urban Ag and they then incorporated those ideas into their zoning bylaw during the next review. I visited your area this past summer (before I discovered your channel and set up). I was impressed with the extent of the mixed land uses, which is not an approach that the U.S. has traditionally supported thru its zoning laws. It was very impressive to see small and medium Ag operations within and adjoining residential and commercial uses. It's a much better way to live - much more balance.

We had a neighbor that was nosey and always complained. Bragged about all the money that she made on her house. She wanted to divorce her husband because he was looking at porn on the internet. Just one look at her and you would understand why. She finally moved to a house on the Alabama coast. Heard later that hurricane Katrina blew her house away, Yee haa!

Curtis I could not "get it" without your videos. I have done nothing yet because I will need to switch out some of my time at other things to get farming in any form to work for me. So all your videos on what you go through socially as well as techniques I can try are pivotal. I have a home with two small plots I can use. Because of those you've interviewed and because you introduced cold winter farming ideas I can now confidently consider effective ways to use these spaces for much more production than I would without your help. I live in Utah. If I get started this year I'll post my work.

See, that is a typical liberal answer....it isn't "hate" but if law states that you can't have any structures like this in your front lawn, and everyone else abides by that law, then either change the law or abide by the law. Simple. Honestly, I wouldn't want to walk down a neighbourhood or own a house in a neighbourhood who had those things all on their front lawns....even for 5 months of the year...... How would YOU like it if I set up a temporary shelter to house a work shop or my boat, motorhome, whatever? YOU probably wouldn't like it much.....
@billjohnson56527 жыл бұрын
whoa, get out of here making all that sense. these liberal commies don't like it, and don't care if you have laws protecting your rights. their rights come first!
@billjohnson56527 жыл бұрын
adam so how did other people buy their "nice" homes? did they steal them? did mommy and daddy buy it for them? or did they work their ass off and invest their money like you did? so they could buy a nice house in a nice neighborhood with the expectation that their neighbors would have a nice house and yard like they do? did you ever think that somebody might have had to work harder than you to get their house adam? no I didn't think so because you are a selfish bitch. nobody was complaining about a garden, they were complaining about a building in the front yard which is hideous and unnecessary. it probably also doesn't occur to you idiots that you are lowering the value of somebody else's investment:stealing from them. they realize that talking to you about it would be equivalent of talking to a stump. so they call the city. maybe you should try to use your brain and be considerate of other people for a change.
@mott19927 жыл бұрын
Bill - How about you stay in your HOA and I'll stay on my farm? That way your property value won't drop because I planted a garden, and I don't have to listen to you complain about me parking my boat in my yard. We will do each other a favor and leave each other alone.

Here in the states, (at least where I'm located) everything is not only regulated by zoning laws but can be regulated by a housing association or community. I agree that in many ways there is a lot of BS associated with this, especially regarding agriculture. In some areas pristine farmland is turned into housing developments and the remaining farms in the area are eventually run off because of complaints from homeowners concerning sight & smells. But regardless of the fact that I can sympathize, putting your tunnel in the front yard,in that setting is rather tacky.
@Holy_hand-grenade7 жыл бұрын
David Exton agree. It’s a slap in the face to his neighbors, but he’s so autistic about his farming that he doesn’t consider implications on neighborhood property values.
@connorcollins86297 жыл бұрын
Autism is the strength of the future. But how would having a greenhouse on the front lawn reduce property values? Fresh food for pennies/dollar? I'm in. Granted I'm autistic, and so is my dad (yes, we procreate). We try to grow at least some of our food. We're lucky that we live in the middle of nowhere, but most people in the US/Canada don't. What's wrong with I greenhouse in the frontyard? I prefer it to billboards or sterile manicured lawns. I can't eat a lawn but I love salad, tomatoes, peppers, squash. Everyone in my family would prefer (if we had to live in a city) to live in a neighborhood with a greenhouse over one with a fancy lawn; and mom and both my siblings are avowed carnivores lol
@lauriemashek54196 жыл бұрын
How can they complain about something that was already there?
@lauriemashek54196 жыл бұрын
I hope he finds out who it was that complained. No more salad for you. Perhaps a fence, even better, a trellis with vines to make it more attractive. Trim it back to a lower height when the tunnel comes down to allow sunlight in.

Urban Farmer Curtis Stone-- could it be monsanto or the like saw how awesome and influential your example is & said, "that just wont do." The goal of having neighborhoods full of people growing their own food is a real threat to Big Business and when big business is threatened, well, people lose their lives in the worst case scenarios, their freedom in other's. When big business is threatened by the little guy the little guy usually loses his income, loses his way of life and loses his property. What you're doing is revolutionary and so its also dangerous particularly if it catches on in popularity. I support what you do wholeheartedly and believe that you should have the right to do what you please on your land. I live on a small homestead only about 5 miles from town and I fear the eventuality of my small town building this way & changing my way of life by force. I'm planning by then to be able to move out into a larger Farm farther away from town. Further away from people. Best of luck to you and to all future Urban farmers. Your farm is very impressive and I've learned a lot from you. Thank you.

KZbinaholic2 or you know, is interested in preserving their property value in a home they were in 25 years before this autistic gardener moved in and ripped up the front and backyard and started putting hideous looking structures in the front yard. It’s not like this guy is just doing it for personal use either, he’s bringing down surrounding home values by running a small commercial farm with zero fucks given about the effect on his neighbors home values.

Is you property zones commercial, residential or both? If it is residential and it looks like you are running a business on your property, you should be shut down. You bought the property and know how it was zoned, so why do you think regulations should not apply to you?
