A visit to Pittsburgh's Incline Railways

On September 9, 2023, I made a brief visit to Pittsburgh to see the city's iconic pair of funicular incline railways. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Pittsburgh was the epicenter of steel production in the United States. To move people and cargo from the city's riverside to the surrounding hilltops, a network of 17 inclines were built between 1864 and 1901. Today, only the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines survive, still forming an important part of the city's transit network as well as being popular tourist attractions.

There's one active Cliff Railway here in the UK. It connects Bridgnorth Hightown and Lowtown together. So that would make three.

Just thankful that two survive. Unthankful though that there’s *_waaaaay_* too many damn lost ones to time

Agreed, but it seems the tunnels through Mount Washington and the development of automobile roads made most of the inclines obsolete.
