In this video I will take a road trip and introduce you to my gardening friend David the Good. it's not very often we get to meet the people who have inspired us to garden and improve our gardening techniques. But I had the privilege of traveling through Alabama last week and met up with one of the gardening authors of some of the best gardening books you can get your hands on. We had a good time looking around his garden, enjoying some Christian fellowship, and talking about plants. Join me as I tour his garden and glean exceptional gardening tips.

Glad you got to tour DTG's place, I enjoyed the video and the live stream. The sitting on the porch smoking your pipes talking about Jesus, nice end to the day. Thanks for sharing Scott, be blessed, stay safe, but most of all have fun. Peace 😎👍🌱👆👉💥🛎

I found your channel a few weeks ago through David the Good. I'd been trying to find someone close to where I live here in Jefferson County, so it was a pleasant surprise when I saw "Black Gumbo". I figured you must be pretty close. Thanks for everything you've shared, I've learned a lot that totally relates to what I see going on in my backyard.

In Nature the tomatoes would 'sprawl' along the ground not grow 'vertically' so this shows what happens when you grow them as nature actually intended. I'm sure many would grow up along a tree or existing fence but without a 'farmer's hand' they would grow along the ground. Cucumbers too. So people always complaining about 'growing naturally' needs to realize what that REALLY MEANS. Good garden!

I watch both of your channels, and also 'Self Sufficient Me' 😀 I've learned more from you than anyone else even though you have a small garden and I'm trying to create a food forest. I've been watching gardeners from Arizona because the Rio Grande Valley in Texas is getting too dry, . ..well, actually probably just my garden. Several times huge storms have rained on Harlingen & San Benito and I didn't get a drop in La Paloma

That's so great that you got to hang out with David. Those snake gourds really took me back to my childhood garden...those plants grow super well in tropical India and we used to play under the canopy ducking between the gourds. My mom made this fantastic dish where she slit and stuffed the gourds with ground beef and potatoes and then sliced and fried them, yummy! I am growing several plants this year, not sure how they will do in dry hot California!!

Scott, one reason I like you and David so much is our very indirect connection through Reformed theology. I was baptized Dutch Reformed. Now I have strayed, to put it mildly, but I made a defence of sorts for predestination: easy enough to imagine God saying, "What? I should only create people who like Me?"

Thought your garden was smaller and was thinking mine was not far off, but when I worked it out we have 83sq metres or 900sq feet of space, and really cannot compare, but to be fair I have maybe 180sq feet of raised bed space and the rest is food forest in the front yard. I think the smaller space, the more creative you are in terms of planting.

I get to watch a David the Good video and a Scott Head video both at the same time!! The black locust trees that David has are more useful in his context: they will send thousands of running roots out beneath the soil, helping to trap organic matter and prevent it from being lost as they pull nitrogen out of the atmosphere to manufacture their own fertilizer. That's great for a large sandy area - the downside is, at some point they will no longer be desirable, and they are tough to get rid of! For smaller areas, Red Bud trees and things like Goumi or Eleagnus Multiflora are good nitrogen fixers.

Scott, concerning vine bores on squash plants (and I’m assuming any other plant that gets vine bores), when you get time, go watch That 1870’s Homestead (Rachel and Todd). In the video, she wraps the base stem of the squash plant (just above the roots), with athletic tape. It is sticky and attaches to itself. She only wraps that portion of the vine (just above the roots and to the first leaf). I thought it was a neat idea. Why not try!
