Beautiful but sad song. My Uncle D. died today and his adult children are all crying. They appreciate everything he has done for them. Neil Diamond makes every song REAL! Geat voice.

My heart has something to say in response to these lyrics: The old man gave his children a table so they didn’t have to sit on the floor. His generation struggled with not having material things. His children live in a world of tiny houses and small properties. They move often and rarely eat at home. How many children labor under their parents’ mistaken belief that they must have whatever the parent did without, instead of raising them with support and self-confidence that they can adapt to the needs they face in their own changing times? His children may not want or need his gift. But another child from another circumstance will. The happiness from shared meals around that table will give it a special blessing for the next owner, whoever that may be. Send forth your gifts with gratitude, and let your gifts find those who need them. ❤️ Your best gifts are not things, but love.

Grew up with Neil because of my dad. You always have to drop into the life of the people before you because it gives you an example of their thoughts at that time. Bet it was my dad's anthem at the time 😊

Because of this moving song, I purchased on old oak table and refinished it myself, chairs and all. Throughout the years, my family gathered around it and ate from there. Strangely, forty-six years later, none of my children have shown an interest in claiming it as part of their inheritance. Now that I'm old and gray, this song has really hit hard. Soon the song will be complete for me.

Hi Roger. I usually don't comment on videos, but yours really touched me. I truly hope one of your children will change their mind and want your beloved table. My favorite uncle was a magician with wood. I'm so grateful to have saved every bowl, bookcase and the rocking chair he gave me. Maybe there's a grandchild, niece or nephew in your life who would treasure the table? I bet it's beautiful and has such special memories! Sending a hug across the miles.

This song always makes me sad. I spent nearly two years maming a table and chairs that was more ggan big enough for eight. Its top was one and a half inches thick, made of Jarrah a wonderful coloursd wood but very heavy, the legs i turned on a lathe and therecwere only two, one each end which both had a chevron top and bottom with e buckle that scewed into place and held the top very well. The chairs took me a long time to make as i whated fhem to have a rounded back, and as there were eith of them i wanted them to be the same as each other. I was proud of the end product as i am an engineer, but learned some woodwork from my fath, i think er who was a master carpenter and joiner who i think might juxt have been proud at what i had done. I did not know what was coming for me from round the corner from my now ex wife and her three children which i treated as my own, and from whom i never heard from ever again after having biught them up, i think by now they would have forgotten i ever there despite having bought th em all up to adaulthoodk, that work was sold, and though i di get left some of tge smaller thing i made which i still have, that table always makes me think of the song, at eighty years old everybtime i hear it it brings back memories that always cast a shadow over my life because i did the best i could for them unaware that what happened was in fact planned, a somewhat bitter pill to swallow. I did not carve my name or anything else to that table and chairs, maybe i should have done, but i know it willl be around long after i am gone, its a sad feeling, i felt like i had failed, even though i did come to learn the truth a good few years later when people who knew her told me that she had braged about what she was going to do. I feel in a way this song has something to do with me, the sad bit was she did not want what she asked me to make which was a harp, in all i made four of then one i still have. I have a wonderful wife now that there is so much i would like to have made just for her. This is a song that i know by heart even now and dont think i will ever forget it.

Statistically: 90% of parents experience "Empty Nester Syndrome", particularly when children exhibit little-to-No remorse for leaving nor staying in touch with the Ones who've raised them. It's sadly Reminiscent of the Song "Cat's in The Cradle" by Harry Chapin. (end) (Fri1Nov'2024) nm.

The pain will always be there. And even though it hurts, the emotional experience is in some way, what keeps us still strongly connected with them.
