Well Doug, this is beautiful, the beauty lies in the simplicity of the video, and the images tell the story of the song perfectly. As well you know, this song has a special poignancy for me, as it was the first song my dear mother heard me sing in public, the lyric, "Are you going away with no word of farewell" brings back the pain of her passing, and the tears sting my eyes as I immerse myself in the video and song. Do not feel guilty for stirring such emotion, as you have achieved what you set out to do, to stir latent emotions in the viewer and listener. There are some songs that are too painful to revisit, this is one such song for me, although it is possibly my favourite cover by Neil Diamond, he sings it with just the right emotion, and depth of feeling, the arrangement is heavenly, and such is Neil's ability, it sounds like one of his own compositions. You have touched my inner being and soul with this, and although the video isn't as majestic as many of your other offerings, its sheer beauty marks it out as special, the images of a young Neil Diamond remind us what a prodigious talent he was/is, and adds to the frustration of his condition today, where we will no longer see his brilliance on stage, he is greatly missed.

Thanks for your most welcome comments Dave. I had no idea that this was the very first song that your mother heard you sing in public. I am listening to this song right now as I respond to your comment and hearing the words, _"Are you going away with no word of farewell",_ has given me goosebumps. I have been mulling over this song for over a month after Suzi Delasierra related to me the tragic event that visited her family, and how this song, and the very same line as you have highlighted, always brings her to tears; the years have not healed. Neil has that unique ability to put his stamp on a song, to the extent that many believe that he actually wrote them... 'Suzanne', 'Both Sides Now', 'I Think It's Going To Rain Today', 'Husbands And Wives', to name but a few. The feeling that Neil is able to imbue into these cover songs is breathtaking, so much so that they appear to have emanated from his pen. I deliberately set out to create a bare-bones video, which is what I felt the song required; even to the extent of converting colour images into black and white images. I also endeavoured to keep images of other than Neil, to a minimum. I felt that his facial expressions in the included images actually told the story and carried the video without the need for embellishment. I guess in the world of entertainment this would be termed a low budget production.😊

@@NeilDiamondCentral It may be a low budget production but it hits the mark wonderfully, the way you approached creating the video is actually a masterstroke, the old adage "Less is more" is so true in this instance, the bare-bones of the video are its strength, where the message is subtle but ever so powerful and moving. It never ceases to amaze me how a song can reach the inner depths of someone, you state how Suzi related a tragedy within her family, and how the very same line in the song took on a whole new meaning, and depth of emotion, for me, and my mother's passing it was exactly as the line says, she just slipped away with "No word of farewell" the reality of that line carries the most pain, and of course the special poignancy and attachment of the song. I thank you Doug, as much as you have provided more majestic video's this could be a standout for me, for touching my soul and deepest emotions, and reminding me of the special someone I had lost.

Dave Radstock isn’t it just amazing what a particular song brilliantly and poignantly sung by a certain singer can do to you emotionally! This song in particular sung beautifully by Neil Diamond is the one that kept running thru my head as I slowly watched my mother slip away from our family earlier this year! She really did love Neil Diamond and his music tho we never had the opportunity to see him perform live , we had the next best thing with his videos and cd’s and what I could find on KZbin ! Her favorite song of his was “I-am...I said” ! But this song sung they way only Neil can just reaches into my chest and gives my heart a gentle squeeze!

When my first husband left for a younger woman, I played this song alot,, for my part in our divorce. I had twins and a daughter. I felt like a single mother, anyway. He wouldn't help with the kids. I was expected to keep the house clean and take care of our kids. The only time he watched the kids was when I had to go shopping or doctor appt. Then he found a bartender that had time for him, that I didn't. Neil Diamond songs made me feel like I was worth loving again. They kept me going on, like our kids. I will always be grateful for these heartfelt songs. ♥️ I am happy again, I found a great guy, who wanted to be with us.

Yes, the trilling in the voice tells the real story of losing and missing somebody still so loved. I attended his last, all but one in Belgium, Antwerp Sportpaleis, in September 2017, so great to be there. It's sad that he didn't perform Stones and this song. Thanks Neil.

Go back to July 1973. This song was all over the radio. I met a beautiful girl and it was love at first sight. But I was not from her area so I had to leave and go back home. This song was playing when I kissed her goodbye. I’ll never forget how I felt when I first saw her and the sadness of not staying there with her. She was 18 I was 21.

Just heard this song for the 100 th time I guess.. I don't remember any singer with this intensity and the flow from his soul.. Another song was Husbands and wives... Both sung so beautifully it would play out a particular imagery in one's mind.. Ive loved many songs from the 70's. But not always the singers.. Beautiful rendition! Neil’s Stone record was played regularly on our sound system when I was a youngster, my Mum bought it we were into the Beatles and Stones and Cat Stevens to name a few, I never appreciated this songwriters musical ability and wonderful timing until many years later. He is a truely great song writer, musician and performer, his are the best concerts you leave feeling the joy of life and music. I hope the more recent drugs available help with his Parkinson’s journey and allow him to continue creating wonderful music, and enjoy his life.🌸🙂
