A Walk Around ALL SAINT'S CHURCH | Carshalton

I am out on my government sanctioned walk and in this Vlog, I’m taking a little stroll around the grounds of the historic All Saint’s Church in Carshalton, Surrey. The ancient Church is Grade II listed and a Place of Worship has stood on this site since at least Norman times although there has been a settlement here since Neolithic times. The current Church contains 12th Century work with the Tower being the oldest part of the building and is thought to date back to before the Norman Conquest. Another great Vlog Mark - some info on the Wooden Cross you featured briefly in the Vlog ….. The Willy Bird Memorial Cross, All Saints Church Graveyard, Carshalton The 'Willie Bird' or 'Wrythe Cross' was named after the son of the landlord of The Cricketers, a local pub in The Wrythe. The landlord, Mr G. Bird, was a popular community figure known as the 'Father of the Wrythe' and during the war had a list of local men who had gone off to fight displayed outside his pub. In 1915 his son Willie died from complications arising from appendicitis, and the cross was named after him. It was originally situated at St. Andrew's Mission Church in Wrythe Lane; when this site was demolished in 1964 it was moved to its current location in the graveyard of Carshalton (All Saints) church. There is now the new memorial to the 'Men of the Wrythe' at Wrythe Green, commemorating the men named on the wooden cross.

Two points, I was informed on when I lived in the area, was that the road going through ponds was known as cars-halt-on as popular stopping place for refreshing horse drawn carts. I seem to remember seeing a photo of a circus with elephants stopping there to drink and rest. As to the church, is there still a grave marked to a German pilot brought down and killed during the 2nd WW - I remember it being of something of a rarity. Thanks for taking me down and around my old stomping ground.

From what I understand, Carshalton is a modern name from the original 'Aultone'. I haven't heard of 'Cars-halt-on' before. You are correct about the photo of the Elephants and can be found online in places. I don't know about the German pilot and will have to pop back and have a search for the Grave. Thanks Alan.

@@MarqEnglish Hi, if memory serves me correctly the Grave is situated near the main Rd at the front. I seem to remember there was a ceremony including German representatives at one time. How it came to be I have no idea. The story of cars-halt-on, seemed to hold up due (as I sure you know) carts being referred to as cars during the 19th C. Marq … another bit of interesting info … there is a memorial stone to Tom Humphrys on the South wall of All Saints Church, Carshalton almost opposite the main pathway of the graveyard …. Tom Humphrys was evidently "a Corpulent barber" who was buried in the All Saints Carshalton Church-yard The inscription for those interested reads TOM HUMPHRYS lies here, by Grim Death beguild Who never did harm to man woman or child And since without foe, none yet e'er was known Poor TOM was nobody's foe - but his own Lay light on him Earth (for none would than he Tho heavy his Bulk) trip it lighter on thee Died September 4th: 1742, Aged 44 years.

Yes, I'd like to know that as well. I think it maybe even longer than 3 years since it was removed. I can't think of a good reason why it would take so long to restore, or whatever it was that needed doing to it.
