I grew up in Beddington and lived there until I was 11, when my family moved to Canada.....in 1956. I went to what was Park Farm School located behind Carew manor in the housing estate......to see the park again and to instantly recollect playing cricket and football and sailing my boat on the pond that seemed huge as a kid......thanks for this.....very much appreciated.....I attended several weddings in St Mary's as well and my aunt kept horses in the old stables......too many memories.......happy camper here.

This is where I used to play as a child. It's a place that I return to, in my mind, when I meditate as it has always given me a calming sense of peace. Thankyou for showing me my favourite weeping willow tree along the stream. Haven't seen that in real time for over 40 years. Most appreciated!

Thanks Marq for sharing your walk with us! It was interesting to see familiar areas of the park. When I was at Wallington Grammar School bearing in mind this was 50 years ago, we would do cross-country running around the park. The bridges, dovecote, boating lake etc were all included. The new intakes each year had a challenge each October, involving running through the (very cold) streams, scaling the Orangery wall, through the woodland copse etc. In my time Carew Manor was used by the school for 11/12 year olds. Science/biology lessons outside were fun! Loved seeing this again, thank you!

The Roman Villa is located at “what 3 words” location “fakes.slam.soil”. I worked there during the 80’s. Also, I’m looking forward to your video on the Beddington tunnels. As a youth I used to go into the tunnel located behind the Plough Pub in Beddington. The original entrance was much higher up the bank than it appears to be now at street level.

Spent a good few years in that park as a kid when we moved to Beddington from the St Helier estate!! Not been back there for a while so was nice to see it again...thank you!! I didn't know that gangway of trees leading up to Carew Manor was called Queen Elizabeth's Walk....but i once rode my horse through that gangway of trees...years ago now...from the bottom right up to Carew Manor....had a great canter ....something i always wanted to do lol.....even though no horse riding is allowed in the park !! Have they closed all the public access to the orangery with them railings??
@MarqEnglish4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hazel for sharing those lovely memories. The Orangery is in the grounds of Carew Manor so not much access.

Thanks Marq, very comforting watching this today. Part of the film "If" starring Malcolm McDowell was filmed inside Carew Manor. It came on BBC late one night in the 90's and I recognised the inside from singing in there with a school choir. IMDB backs this up.

Great video, Marq. Ben had a football match at the park a few weeks ago. The dormers on the church are a clue to a Victorian restoration - a number of churches were given these to improve light into the nave (I can think of Banstead and tandridge locally.)

When I was a schoolboy at Carew Manor 53 years ago we were shown a tunnel that was said to lead to Croydon Palace (as an escape route for the bishop from Croydon, or the family from Carew Manor, who knows?!) The tunnel didn't go far, it had been sealed off, apparently was unsafe. Or to stop us escaping perhaps!
