Welcome on a garden tour featuring an inspiring garden design filled with DIY garden ideas and inspiration. This garden, located in Bright, an alpine town three hours from Melbourne, highlights the beauty of autumn foliage with 130-year-old elm trees in the front yard. Join me, Chloe from Bean There Dug That, as we explore the formal yet fun elements of this enchanting garden.
In this picturesque garden, autumn starts early and the trick to an incredible autumnal display is to have different species of trees that change their leaves at various times, showcasing a spectrum of autumn colours. The low clipped hedges throughout the front and back gardens add a formal touch, enhancing the garden's elegant design.
Nine years ago, Christine started to transform this property, adding various plants and sculptures. The deep shade under the elms necessitated hardy plants like lomandras, which thrive even in dry shade. Christine also added whimsical elements like a fairy garden, making the space playful and engaging.
The front yard, with its formal yet cottage-style elements, complements the charming house and wide verandah. Christine designed the backyard to create distinct rooms and spaces, offering different perspectives from the balcony and throughout the garden. The back deck is a prime spot to enjoy the garden and the north-facing sunshine in autumn and winter.
Christine's efforts in transforming the garden are evident in the variety of plants, including euphorbia, roses, clematis, and loropetalum. A highlight is the Cercis 'Forest Pansy', which offers stunning autumn colours and gorgeous spring blossoms.
The garden features numerous seating areas, providing cool, quiet retreats compared to the more exposed front yard. The flat lawn space in the backyard is dotted with eclectic plantings, reflecting Christine's love for diverse plant species. Despite the challenges of shade from growing trees, she has managed to create a productive herb and citrus garden.
Christine's composting system efficiently handles the fallen leaves, turning them into rich compost to nourish the garden. The quirky elements throughout the garden, like the "Grandma's Garden" sign and playful features, make it an engaging space for children and adults alike.
A beautiful gingko tree, one of the last to change colour in autumn, and a dark green magnolia frame a cosy fire pit seating area. Christine designed and planted the garden herself, creating inviting spaces that encourage movement and exploration. Circular sculptures and garden beds add cohesion, while the formal avenue leads back to the house.
In the shady areas, giant photinia hedges protect the ground from the northern sun, supporting a lovely collection of shade-loving plants. Fatsia, podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty', and lamium brighten these areas with their unique foliage.
This garden bed is a perfect example of year-round foliage colour, featuring red foliage plants like coprosma, and loropetalum.
I've loved the mix of formal and whimsical elements in this garden, and I hope it inspires you to try something similar in your own space. Let me know which part of this garden inspired you the most. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more garden tours and tips. See you next time!
