Corlys looks like a beast in this series. We usually only saw him book wise as a small council member, but in that shot of him charging into battle in the Steps tones, Steve is like a full head taller than the troops running alongside him. Pretty epic

@@being2real943It's a book... use your imagination! 1) Was his skin color... or any of the Velaryion branch's skin color ever mentioned in the books or was it assumed due to the silver hair & violet eyes? It may have been but I don't remember it. Guess what...there ARE dark skinned people with blue eyes. I teach genetics. Skin colorvis a polygenic trait which is why we have so man6 shades. Genetically it is possible for two dark skinned people to have very light skinned children as light skin is recessive to dark. We don't know everything about the old ones. 2) It's possible that the Velaryions of Driftmark were somewhat different after living for generations away from the freehold and nearer the equator. Even here IRL skin colors mutate. Once we ALL had dark skin. Light skin is actually a mutation that helped humans as they migrated North where there was less sunlight. Humans need sunlight so our skin can manufacture vitamin D as it does not naturally occur in food. Near the equator that's not a problem... too much sun which can cause skin cancer is the issue... SO we had darker pigmentation. But northward the sun is at an angle and less intense. Lighter skin lets more sun reach the cells that make vitamin D which we need to build bone. In our modern times we add artificial Vitamin D to some food/drink... such as milk to prevent people from being low in vitamin D and having soft bones leading to Ricketts. So being nearer the equator perhaps the Velaryion branch developed darker skin over generations. 3) It freaking DOES NOT MATTER to the integrity of the story line - What matters IS having a great actor to bring Corlys to life. Steve IS Corlys ... and if something as inconsequential as skin color knocks your head out of the story... then maybe it's something already in YOUR head that is the issue.

there is one thing i don't understand. if in the series the Velaryon are black it means that the Targaryens and in particular King Jaeherys is too. His mother is Alyssa Velaryon. it means that Jaeherys and his sister-wife Alyssane are mixed race. Except that we can clearly see that in the series, that Jaeherys is not half-breed. Wokism makes things inconsistent

Half-breed is a strange word to use for someone who's "mixed" but I'll leave it at that. The thing is we have no idea how much of the ridiculously extended Velaryon family (GRRM creates a new random one of some obscure lineage every book) is dark-skinned. This could easily have very little affect on the appearance of the Targaryens of history. Also in the real world people often look very white anyway when they have only a 25% or 30% black admixture. Essentially this "wokism" is a none issue, there's no need to even look that deep into family tree and make those extrapolations.

One of the velaryons (probably corlys’s grandfather) married a summer islander. It’s the only explanation for this. The showrunners said there is an explanation in the show.

Well the idea some Valeryens married into the seafaring and some pirating south island peoples IE DARKER SKINNED makes sense and gave Targaryens from Dragonstone and surrounding Valeryens houses on near islands a maritime power. I just thought more Valeryens had dragons than just the Targaryens being from the books more than Targaryens followed the targaryen woman's prophecy to moved to Dragonstone away from the DOOM. The Valeryen genes still were strong enough to give silver hair is fantasy logical being IRL in my family out of 5 kids one of us got the DARK skin of our dad and rest of us freckles lighter skin hair from our maternal side. They identify Starks with dark hair with dark eyes, lannisters with blonde hair and green eyes, Tullys with redheads(auburn) hair and blue eyes. Especially Baratheons with the dominant gene of having thick dark hair over most of their descent, which is how Ned found out about Cersei's kids out of wedlock. George RR Martin is very specific about Certain houses and their looks. Also the regions of the world. Dorne with their olive skinned original Nymerians.
