In this video I discuss the problem I am having with the Minn Kota trolling motor on my Lund boat. The Minn Kota Ulterra finally gave me a problem. If you have ever had any problems with the Minn Kota Ulterra please let me know! This trolling motor problem is with the auto deploy and auto stow function on the Ulterra trolling motor. When the Ulterra motor shuts down the motor will not deply and will not stow. There is not easy way to manually stow an Ulterra trolling motor.

I practiced manually stowing mine a couple of times at home just so I would be familiar with the process in case I needed to do it on the water. So far that need hasn't surfaced.

36V Ulterra Owner here for 5 years. Spend hundreds of hours a year pulling cranks with it. Its been flawless, but the first thing I did after I put it on was practice how to manually stow it. With a simple screw driver it will take you a minute to do. I have never had to do this but its common sense that at some point it will fail. My remote is rechargeable and I do so while on the water due to the time we spend trolling. I have it linked to my fish finder so I can operate it from there, if I want. I also carry the foot pedal that it comes with in the bow compartment, just in case all else fails. This motor has changed the way I fish with no need for a kicker. 180AH worth of battery power and you are good for 10+ hours of trolling. If you are scared of this technology how do you live with a lithium in your boat that only gives you power when the computer inside of it decides it is OK to do so?

Regardless of issues, I'll only run Minn Kota now. Motorguide refused to sell me a locking pin for a quick release bracket for my XI-3 and wanted me to buy a whole new mount. Minn Kota simply carriess them on their site. Sold that motor last season and I'll never buy another one. Thanks for helping your customer.

I thought hard about the Ulterra when I was rigging my new bay boat, thinking that would be sweet when in the ocean, not having to go on the front deck to deploy the TM. Ran Riptide on my skiff for years with no issues so felt good about the Riptide. After talking to the owner of boat dealership and him telling me how many Ulterra he had to repair and send to get repaired, I decided to go with another Riptide and glad I did with some of the stories I've heard. Been running Minn Kota TM's for 25 years, only upgraded when I upgraded boats. Thinking about getting a new bay boat next year, leaning toward trying the Power Pole trolling motor. But $5k stings! End up with $10k in a trolling motor and set of blades!

Been running 36V 112 60" shaft Ulterra since 2016. ONE issue in 8 years. Due to battery voltage drop. Batteries were 5 years old. Replaced 12v batteries and no issues since. I carry spare remote batteries as well. Best TM I've owned so far ( boat owner since 1980s). I've heard of some issues but thankfully I've not experienced them

Ulterra definitely comes with a foot pedal. Also, you can purchase a micro remote for about $100 which is also a better remote for its simplicity imo. It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made for fishing and any boat I ever own will have an ulterra, but yes, most boats will need a longer shaft than 48”.

Ulterra are great but you want the 36V with a 60” shaft, no matter what. The 60” shaft is non negotiable if you fish anything other than a bass boat. And even still, you can adjust the height/depth of the motor so it doesn’t smash the bottom when you’re in shallow water. The remotes are rechargeable now I’m pretty sure. Ours have been anyhow. The older models weren’t. The older models also had temperamental issues with their technology. Power pole deploy and stow signals used to interfere with the two of them and you can have one deploy at random. Which is not great when you’re on the interstate, or on plane going across the lake. But the new models have that worked out now. That was nearly 10 years ago.

I had Ulterra 24v 60 inch shaft and did have foot pedal for two years, the do not like cold weather, it broke three different times on me, thankfully under warranty, I sold it and got the Terrova , miss the fancy features of the Ulterra but would never go back, Terrova is a tank and cold weather doesn’t effect it!

I run five different boats during a year of multi species fishing. I quit Motorguide because of poor warranty service. The factory refused warranty service on the one on my bass boat, but at a tournament on Lake Mead, a factory tech fixed the problem no charge. I switched all 5 boats to Minn Kota and had good look for the past 20 years. I always sent my few problem motors to the factory and received prompt excellent service. That stopped recently and now Minnkota refuses to receive their Motors for repair at the factory. That is very disappointing and I guess that means going back to Motor Guide.

Ulterra comes with foot control and a strap for manual storing…additionally you can use an app on your phone in case your remote batteries die. An additional thought you might consider, I always keep an older extra battery and jumper cables in my boat fully charged to have power if my starting motor or trolling motor batteries go dead for some reason. It’s a little extra weight in the boat but a weight that is lifted off of your mind.

My trolling motor, a 112lb Ulterra 36v has had deploying issues since I purchased it about 5 years ago. It would not deploy what felt like 3 or 4 times out of 5. Took it to KC to have it worked on by an authorized dealer and they replaced the worm drive motor and a bracket and it still didnt fix it. Minn Kota said they would fix it but I would have to pay to get it shipped to them, which was more of a pain in the butt than pulling the gear each time so I decided not to go that option. So far this season, it has deployed flawlessly but now it is a pain in the butt to stow. It will give me the dreaded beep beep and stop stowing but a couple of deployed and stows and it will work, I will take it, its easier than the manual deploy feature. I run mine without the right side cover because it makes it easier to disassemble to get it to deploy, only takes a couple of minutes once you get the steps down. It is real fun in 35 degree weather at night. Little screws and frozen fingers, an absolute joy. I do use a split clip clamp tractor pin to replace the C Clamp that holds the worm gear to the shaft, I have it tied onto the unit with 100lb braid so I can remove it quickly and there is no risk of losing the split clamp The unit does have a foot control pedal. You can also connect it to your Humminbird Sonar, Solix allows for control through the screen. You can even pair it to your phone and control it through blue tooth that way for an added back up remote. I use all three methods on a daily basis when I am out. Having it paired to head unit or phone will protect you in case the remote battery dies. There is a feature on the unit that will auto stow if voltage is getting low, if I recall correctly.

I was recently in the market for a new TM. I highly considered the Ulterra, to the point of having it in my online shopping cart but never actually hitting "purchase". I just couldn't get past the fact that you have to basically disassemble the side of the motor to get it to stow if the remote stops working. I ended up with the Terrova with the i-pilot remote and I'm really happy with it so far.

Being that you have a Baron, you absolutely 100% should get a 72 inch shaft without lift assist. I have a 18.5 foot Lund and got the 72 inch. Also, get the newer version that runs off of Minnkotas new gps system not I-Pilot, they will be stopping support with I-Pilot at some point (I called Minnkota to research before buying my new Terrova). Minnkota does not even offer lift assist on new Terrovas because they pop out of the water at times. Anyways, hope that helps and have a nice day!

The biggest mistake Minn Kota did with the Ulterra was to not add the trim and deploy/stow feature to the cellphone app. There is a way to stow it if its stuck deployed. You take the side off and then a screw off a little plastic thing (only need a Phillips screwdriver). If the trolling motor lost is position you can reset it: In the deployed position turn it off, turn it on, and then hit the power button 3 times. It will go all the way down then all the way back up to its proper position (max up trim). Melton Hill Bill's remote fried on him while we were at the King Kat tournament yesterday. We had to plug it into his fish finder to stow it (only other way to stow if its working). We had to reset it too as it lost its place due to the remote issue. The moving parts can be an issue over time. Its always good to have a reputable repair shop nearby (we have Swafford's).

I’ve had terrova and ulterra. Love my ulterras. Only problem I’ve had is when I forgot to unhook trolling motor stabilizer. Quick reset and on my way. I keep up recommend maintenance and spray shaft with pledge. My three friends who have ulterra haven’t had a problem. I have heard of ulterra problems and most people I’ve helped have been operator error. The second is they have to have good power and are sensitive to voltage drop. When my batteries were going bad, the ulterra would beep when it had low voltage. It would not turn but would still stow. New batteries and no problem since. I’m freezing conditions, I trim motor out of water and let drain. That cuts down on freezing it down. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. going on the 4th year this year.

My son bought one second hand and I'm sure the guy that sold it knows he was unloading a pos. It routinely shuts off and needs reset. Or shuts off by itself and refuses to power up. Batteries are lithium and 2 years old and have 26.6 vac at the motor. Next step will be to hook the multimeter in to save the min voltage level just to be sure the wiring is solid but I can't see anything wrong and the batteries and wires worked great on out cable steer. Looks like a $$300 us board is in the future. Though the one shop I talked to said it would be unlikely to work again. It can run between 20 mins and 2 seconds.

Ulterras like clean good power!!!, keep em clean!!! read the owners manual !! ulterras come with a foot pedal and a storage strap , I'm sorry this video sounds like you didnt read up or was user error! You have a wiring issue, them big lunds need a min 72inch for optimum for performance
@DieterMelhorn
@DieterMelhorn Ай бұрын
Clean consistent voltage, CHECK, got that. The motor never lost power during the lock-up, and had the proper voltage and amperage upon return. So, with that in mind, what wiring changes would need to be made?

Didn't even know the ultera came in a 48 inc shaft, too short for a deep v boat. I have a 72 in terrova on my lund 1875 Pro V for rough water operation and having the extra length on top makes it easier to break over when lifting it up.
@DieterMelhorn

Yes, this one needs a longer shaft for this style boat....

Minn Kota makes an app that you can download onto your phone. My remote batteries and run out on me twice and both times I was able to use my phone app and completely control the trolling motor without difficulty

The terrova is a no brainier, it's a workhorse. Not a lot that can go wrong with It. You do have to deploy it manually, that's the only downside, if you can call it that.

From the sound of the size of your boat you would probably have needed a 112 pond 36 volt 60" shaft. Not being a smart ass, I have a 175 tracker deep V with the 60" shaft 80 pound thrust and it the cats meow.. Had it now for 4 years and never had a single problem

great job disseminating bad info. First they come with a foot control. This video is full of user-caused red flags. Just shows the problem with this TM is the uninformed user. Read the manual!!! If you are going to complain about this motor you should be looking at yourself. I never heard any comments on maintenance and that is the root of most problems with the Ulterra. Because it is more mechanically complicated than the Terrova. It needs MK recommended routine maintenance. Read the manual people. jeeeez!!!
@DieterMelhorn
@DieterMelhorn Ай бұрын
None of that changes the fact that the motor a)just stopped working, no amount of maintenance can change that, b)the manual stow is a poor design, and c)this model has been plagued by problems that none of the other Minn Kota motors have.
@bart1896
@bart1896 Ай бұрын
@@DieterMelhorn given your comments in the video it is pretty clear that you have not put the work into the functioning of the Ulterra, wouldn't surprise me if there is something problematic with the power supply or wiring going to the TM given your lack of maintenance of the Ulterra

I bought a new ulterra for my boat year ago. The second time I had it out it worked at first then it would stop deploying. It connected to my Humminbird because it had a built in transducer. After much frustration and lost fishing time I found that if I grab it and shake it in anger it would work again for a while. I sold that boat but kept the motor and Humminbird monitor which are in storage. I bought another used boat with an Ultrex and it works fine. I do miss that auto deploy.
