Nice video. One thing I would add is that if you are replacing an older motor with a new ulterra, make sure that you have a properly sized circuit breaker. Found on my boat that the previous owner had a 40a breaker installed and the 24v ulterra calls for a 60a. This most certainly caused my random shut offs under heavy load and most likely the one stow error I had.

This video was extremely helpful and informative. I have had my Ulterra for 3 years. Last season it started having problems deploying and would stop and show motor error. I brought it to the Minnkota service Centre in my area. I was told just to clean the shaft with armor all wipes. I asked about preventative maintenance etc. After paying the $100 bill for them to wipe it down it has continued to give me problems frustrating me on the water without my trolling motor. I just completed everything you mentioned from the tension of the belt to the lubrication. It is now deploying and stowing without issue. Many thanks.

Good video, I too have been running the Ulterra for about 4 years now. I hear people comment to me while I am at the ramp or on the water that there is to many moving parts and the motor will someday leave me abandoned on the water. Well it hasn’t happened yet, and I love this motor. Thanks for the tips on maintenance. Hopefully it will lead to those naysayers reevaluating their resistance to a magnificent machine.

Had one on order but read the terrible reviews on the Minn Kota web site and promptly canceled it. If they offer a 5 year warranty i might purchase one in the future. $3500 after taxes is way to too much for this unit that gets 50% bad reviews. I'll just keep rebuilding my terrova for now.

I appreciate your video and have watched it a number of times. I'm currently working on a step-by-step tutorial video on how I launch my boat with the Ulterra. One KZbin tip I can share with you... take your first zero off the time stamps you put in your description and KZbin will auto-generate actual cut-to positions for your video. You have 00:37 and then 1:01 and 03:25, etc. If you only have 0:00 to start, then 1:01 and 3:25 and that same format after, it will recognize it. Great video and great information, though! Thanks again for the video!

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. I bought my Minn Kota Ulterra 8 months ago and was used very little the first 4 months. It was great until 2 weeks ago and would not stow. I had noticed that it sounded louder while deploy and stow process over the past 6 weeks. It was repaired under warranty by authorized service dealer and he replaced the trim assembly and told me it was caused by water in the head. I asked why head is not sealed to keep water out, but he said water will get in the head. He suggested to deploy and stow after wash down to drain the head. I do wash down the unit each time I come in from salt water but have never raised unit to drain head. I am also going to get some 100% silicone spray to try your tips.and hope this keeps me away from the service dealer. I had the Terrova I pilot before getting this unit last October and really like the I Pilot, but now I am thinking I should have stayed with the manual deploy and stow from all the problems I am hearing about the Ulterra.

I've not been so lucky with my Ulterra Riptide. First one was in the shop more days than days on the water. Factory replaced my nearly 2 year old motor with a new one. It's lasted most of the summer before quitting. It's going to the repair shop tomorrow. Use in salt water is much harder on equipment than fresh water. Fantastic when they work, a pain when they don't.

Strangely enough, my Ulterra quit deploying yesterday while on the lake. Took it to Brian at Sartin’s today. Problem was that the main shaft and the ramps where the motor reaches the stow position needed cleaning and lubricating. I’ve had it since Sept. and don’t get to go that much but when I watched this clip I made a mental note about needing to schedule the lube maintenance routine. Just waited one trip too long. I am Riptide Ulterra user. Just to note for everyone about the top of the steering bucket there is 2 connection for the trim module, both positive and negative connection, you need to know the silicon spring under the connector is in good condition = had good elasticity. If your Ulterra getting some of the electrical noise when you deploying the motor, that is the symptom. You can also notice an electrical spark between the trim module and the steering bucket at dark or at night when this occurred. I found this may be the reason why I failed my mainboard :(

Minn Kota confirmed to me they recommend ‘Pledge or Bow Wax’ for lubricants on the shaft and belt. Both are used because they don’t attract dust/dirt. The worm/screw drive light coat with ‘marine grease’. I would recommend a 100% synthetic grease for same reason, I have heard it does mot attract dirt like a petroleum based grease for my firearm cleaning and lubrications.

Yeah, just had to add this as there is NO response from anyone, all the brains and service options are on holidays xmas/New year 4 two months both Aus/NZ . MK is dead and I've no way of overriding computer to get MK ulterra to function? Done a manual stow/deploy, then did computer managed deploy/stow only to have power head(thrustmotor) rotate 90 degrees and jam in housing base. Reset option from pause to deploy just convinces the computer to detect an overload....and locks up any other options (safety issue... I guess?) Have removed unit from bow and now 2x12 volt batteries to bench test. Can MK Ulterra unit be side-mounted on bench , hooked up to batteries for bench test?? No room low ceiling room or bench height to allow vertical deploy/stow option. There's no other way to release the stow tension....just asking someone?

Your video is the best I have seen so far. Here is my issue. I have the 36v ulterra rip tide and had stow issues last year and they replaced the mother board due to issues. I have put about 5 hours on the new mother board. yesterday the motor stopped 6" vertically during the "stow" function. The shaft is clean, belt is tight and I still had good power left on my batteries. The motor will still trim up/down but will not complete the stow function. I have done the 3 fast push of the power button reset. My unit still will not stow 100"% to the horizontal position from 6" from power head placement. Do you have any suggestions as I am on vacation and still have 4 days left to fish. Thank you, Jeff

His widow sold it without knowing where any of the manuals were, and also the remote for the motor is missing. It came with the 2017 ulterra i pilot link with universal sonar, (no side or down imaging). Also a helix 9 chirp SI GPS G2N at the console with the transducer at the stern. Also a helix 10 sonar GPS ( no "N") at the bow connected to the ulterra transducer. The two units are connected with an ether cable but the i pilot link 8 pin cable is not attached. It is laying under the cover plate at the bow coiled up with a zip tie. Can you explain what I need to do to get where both units can deploy and stow the ulterra and hopefully use the other features that it is designed to do? I hope you can explain it to where a 65 year old country feller that's not too savvy with technology can get it working. thanks

Chad what bracket are you using if any so you can take it off the boat or is it secured directly to the boat

Thanks for video. I have used my motor for 2 years without issue. It will not deploy. Power comes and stays on motor and pedal. When hitting deploy on pedal will not deploy then beeps. Tried power off and on holding power button in goes to green when pressing power 3 times does blink red. Took both sides off no wire pinching. Any suggestions for fixing?

Hey Chad, My ulterra wants to droop when it comes back in to stow and even got caught on the storage lip once and gave me the motor error. Does tightening the belt tighten the entire prop unit? It seems to slip when it pulls up (because of weight).

@@Catfishedge How far away can you be with the hand held remote and still have it function the trolling motor while the boat is sitting in the lake after launching

Great info. However, my brand new Ulterra spot lock fails randomly and I have to press the anchor button again. My neighbor just bought a new one for his new boat and his also stops spinning and the spot lock button has to be pressed agaon. Surely we can't be the only ones with this issue. Batteries are charged fully and on trickle charge for days...
