You are right, otherwise every lock would have to be drilled out when the owner doesn't return. There's always lies behind this stuff.Edit: Watch YT:" New twist in case of deposit box theft" (spoiler- its a bank crime)

I worked for a nationwide bank for 20 years. The customer gets 2 keys when they rent the box. The bank does not have any customer keys. The bank has guard keys that have to be used in conjunction with the customer's key. Some banks have gone to 1 key opening. The customer key will open the lock, no guard key needed.

I had a strange experience with my bank almost 20 years ago. I had a safety deposit box there and paid the fee in February for the year. I took the receipt with me. Sometime later, I got a notice saying my fee had not been paid, and my box would be drilled. I took my receipt back to the bank, and they made a copy and said it was all taken care of. Later on, I got another letter. I took that receipt to the bank 4 times to prove the fee had been paid. After the 4th time, they promised me their records were accurate and everything was fine with my box. About a month later, I got another letter telling me my box had been drilled and the contents moved to the downtown branch. To say I was mad was an understatement! I went downtown and picked up my stuff. It had all been inventoried, and everything I remembered appeared to be there. I took my things with me, and on the way out closed out my accounts with that bank for good! To this day I wonder what they were looking for.

Disgusting behaviour by your 1st bank experience. They did not inform the record’s department of head office. Then again it does sound shonky of banks not to guarantee the contents of the boxes. You may as well left it at a police station safe lock-up or in your garden for they have more security than banks do.

They may record 24/7/365 but unfortunately footage is only kept for 30 to 60 days. Have you ever tried to watch footage? It's a bitch to find what you're looking for if you don't know when it happened. Regardless, the bank should offer insurance to everyone "included" in the rental price.

It has to be someone really high up. It can't be opened without both the customer and banks key. Someone who has access to the keys the customer is giving had to of made a copy of the keys and had time to put them back. It shouldn't be to hard to figure out who has access to those restricted keys. A standard bank teller can't just go and grab those keys. A bank manager comes with you and unlocks it then leaves the room to give you privacy. There's only a few people in the bank who can pull this off.

How difficult would it be to place an inconspicuous camera in the area where the customer opens the box, angled to give a view of its contents? If linked to a phone app, it would be armchair shopping for an inside thief. Also there are automatic lockpicks used by law enforcement and government agents that have been around for decades. You just insert, pull a trigger, and the device cycles through a sequence of notch positions until the lock opens in a few seconds. No skills required. You only need to drill if you're replacing the entire lockset. Opening a lock is easy.

Brian West my point is a family member could do all of the things you mentioned and have access to the the key negating the need to pick a lock. Secondly we are assuming that this bank actually supervised those visiting the safety deposit boxes. If they’re indemnified from all liability for theft then it doesn’t really matter if they do a good job or not because they can’t be sued. Being that this story was aired on TV had there been a rash of thefts we probably would have heard about it. Most importantly a thief doesn’t want family photos, hence why were they also missing.

You can show ID and get a replacement key. The lock isn’t replaced; there are dupes of all the keys at the bank. They give you a new one and then order a spare to keep on hand. So, 1 fake ID later, and boom, you're in. Could've been a fam member years ago when IDs were easier to fake. The bank can also move your stuff to a new box. Our small hometown bank was acquired by a big corp bank, and they 'upgraded' all the safety deposit boxes. (Read, inventoried contents and made the standard size smaller so they could rent more boxes in the same amount of space.) We got a letter that you could come in by a certain date, or they'd do it on their own. We went in of course. But if another box holder found this woman's stuff mixed in with her own, someone f'd up big time.

Me, personally, I've received CHECKS...RECENTLY ...even EONS LATER....small checks from old deposits....even an OLD card insurance policy from 20 YEARS AGO.. old refunds and stuff. I typed my name for MY STATE....UNCLAIMED PROPERTY....AND THEY HAD IT !! The key question is, was anyone else robbed? Can the victim actually prove she had the money in the box? If no one saw her putting the stuff in there, how can we trust what she's saying is true?
@JamieVegas
@JamieVegas 4 жыл бұрын
Those locks are lever locks, which are super hard to casually pick. Plus, wouldn't more customers report the same issue? I can't imagine a bank employee targeted this one woman's box, especially since the bank doesn't keep a record of the contents for this very reason.

The bigger question is, why would you pay to rent a box to store 67k in cash? Even the worst savings account would pay you interest to put that money in there. Better yet, invest it and at least have your savings keep pace with the market. Hearing about someone keeping that kind of cash under the radar raises all kinds of alarm bells for tax evasion or some sort of criminal activity

For privacy. The government can always easily find out how much one has in any account by contacting the bank. For a safe deposit box, it will require them to go through additional steps to open the box. Furthermore, with today's pitiful interest rates, it makes little sense keeping money in a bank when inflation will just erode purchasing power.

There's a follow up video. The woman's stuff was found in the lockbox directly below hers. An apparent explanation is that both inner trays were removed at the same time and they put them back in the wrong boxes. The woman only recovered $20,000. It's unclear if she was mistaken about how much money she had or if there's another explanation.

A month after my grandpa died in 1985 his bank sent him a letter saying his box was past due and if it wasn't paid in 30 days it would be drilled. so my grandma went down to pay it and they refused to take the money. they said only my grandpa could pay it in person. she had his DC and all his ID stuff plus their marriage certified. they still refused to let her pay. She got a lawyer the next day and he filed a suit to stop them from drilling the box. A judge agreed but the bank said they drilled it already " 3 weeks before it was to be drilled". they gave my grandma the stuff they said was init but was missing most of the stuff that was listed in an inventory sheet my grandpa left in it that was done by him and the bank manager. All of his medals from WWII were gone, a pocket watched that belong to his grandfather,, and gold coins he got in Germany off a dead German officer " that is a very long story". My grandmother never got any of the stuff back

I used to work for a bank. It’s true that the bank needs the customer key in order to open the box. If the customer loses their key then the only option is the customer pays a fee and the bank calls a company like Stanley to come out and drill open the box to retrieve the contents. And it’s also true that the safe deposit boxes are not insured.

It has to almost certainly be an inside job. Some bank employee got a look at the stack of cash and somehow stole it. It does take two keys to open the box. A general key the bank has and an individual key for the renter of the box. But I can imagine an employee having duplicates made before the box was rented, and just bides their time until it looks like there is something really valuable in a box. Also there is the possibility that the renter does not turn their key in the lock properly, fails to lock their lock, and the bank employee observes this and waits for the opportunity to loot the box. You can get insurance from an insurance company, but then the contents are known, and probably only insured if the vault is physically entered illegally.

I did that in the bottom of the top drawer of my dad‘s filing cabinet after my brother asked me four times in the same conversation what time I would be showing up the day of his funeral. It was a tossup whether he would be able to pretend he never saw it because he told on himself (to me) for trying to declare our dad non compos mentis. About three weeks later when I finally read it expecting just to see a bunch of formality about disposition of property and no inequal treatment of any sibling I found not just the favoritism that you might think would make him the guy in no hurry to go through all that stuff (until that moment I really did believe that I’d been advantaged with a better mother and all sorts of other stuff that justified a lifetime of cutting slack I never wanted to believe was favoritism for my brother) but also he raised the idea (of declaring him unfit) a month after Dad executed said will favoring my brother. Execuhole had to tell him incompetence invalidates recently-executed wills. No shit. If I was making up fiction I would make it up easier to believe. He’s a half brother nine years younger who I evidently should’ve strangled in his crib but I was instead never anything but stupid enough to be protective toward. He hadn’t even stayed until the old fucker drew his last breath so if that’s who Dad wanted for a favorite they definitely deserved one another.

Every safe deposit box I have ever seen require two keys to open. One held only by the bank and a second one given to the customer. The only people who would ever have copies of both keys are the bank. If the box was not damaged, that can only mean it was an inside job. That means a bank employee stole the contents of that box. That means the bank is responsible for that theft, insured or not.

Safe deposit boxes normally have 2 keys, a guard key (the banks), and a customer key. The guard key is used first, then the customer's key is used to finish the opening. Some banks have gone to one key, the customer's key only. You show your key, sign a log, and go open your box. Most likely, someone had a copy of her key and forged her name. She needs to look at her own family.

Assuming she even put the money in there. How do we know that for a fact? You are put alone in a small room to open and close your box. Neither she nor the bank has any proof the money was in there.
