A Week in the Life of a Mature Student

I'm Hannah, a 29 year old 'mature student' studying on the Foundation Engineering and Physical Sciences degree at the University of Nottingham.

For a long time now, I've wanted to retrain as a physicist. Even while I was doing my first degree in 2008, it was something I had started thinking about more and more. Last September, I decided to throw caution to the wind in order to follow my passion.
Before I took the first step, I spent many years trying to find stories of people who had made similar changes, but there wasn't all that much to go on. I had so many questions that I couldn't find answers to, so I decided that when I began studying I would make videos to try and answer some of those questions. So that's what I'm doing! Oh and it can't hurt to brush up on my speaking and presenting skills while I'm at it.

I know you uploaded this like 2 years ago but I just found this video and found it very reassuring and inspiring. I’m 23 and already have an undergrad degree in English lit (because when I was 16/17 and applying for uni all I wanted to do was write and be creative 😂), but now I want to go back and retrain as a zoologist because animals have been my passion since I was a tot really but I was so nervous about whether going back for a second undergrad was weird and I haven’t seen many people doing it. ANYWAY, long story short, I think like you I want to throw caution to the wind and go back next year to study. Thanks for this!!

You are very welcome, I'm glad you found the video useful. I haven't regretted my decision for one second since going back to uni. It's tough, but I've loved every second. I also love writing - I almost did English and Creative Writing for my first degree. Good luck with whatever you decided to do!

I am beyond a failure in every way but am trying to improve myself but how can I ever prevail when everyone else, including yourself, can multitask and achieve so much, whilst I struggle to do one basic thing ie pass a gcse that my much younger peers have easily done already!

Hi! Don't give up on the GCSEs. It's always easier to compare yourself to others and just think you'll never do as well, but it's rarely ever true. My GCSEs aren't great. I had to retake my maths to get a C so I could go to college. Wishing you the best of luck!

I am really struggling to just concentrate, get started and do something and I am an adult student still at GCSE level! It's 2019 for goodness sake and I time is ticking! I am determined but getting nothing done! I would love to be able to focus, be successful and move forward but I need to sort out these foundations first ie basic GCSEs . Please help!

@@jamesstewartwilliams Beyond shit. Trust me you don't know the half of it. Mate just thank God or whatever you believe in that you're not me. I am sat here suffering evn further for absolutely nothing. People walking past my house in their skimpy clothing whilst I rot away with skin disease and chronic illnesses including unbearable pains (neglected by the NHS, government and all authorities and even though I thoroughly look after myself ) are pissing me off to no end. And in regards to the studying I never even started and I never will. I'm unemployed, uneducated, unloved, hated, cursed and wasting away. But since you so kindly asked I genuinely send best wishes to yourself and family in kickdown and beyond.

@@zv54 have you looked at functional skills if you haven't got GCSE I think they are free these are equivalent to GCSE level and then you could do Access course which will gain you entry to University, i work in a uni and it is never too late, and there are many ways to get in, theres also so much help and support for students with health issues worth having a look at your local coleges. DON'T give up!!!

Hi Hannah, as a 29 year old I'm going to assume that you do not live with your parents. How do you support yourself while going to uni full time? Thanks

Hi Kristina. Thanks for the question. I was only full-time on the foundation year, and that was really, really tricky. I worked part-time (about 8 hours a week), worked over the holidays to boost my bank balance a little, had very low rent living with my partner and basically only spent money on food shopping. I also had a bursary of £2000 from the university. Now I'm part-time, it's a little easier as I have a tuition fee loan, have a very flexible part-time job, and can get assistance through things like housing benefit if I need it...

Thanks for your comment. The Irish system is different to the British system, but as with most universities, you will need to contact them directly :)
