For the audio book you're reading(which is now one of my favorite trilogies ever), like half(ish) of the book is soooo slow and it took me like a whole month to get through half of the book, but once you understand the world the author created and kind of get to know the characters, it's really good and I read the next two books in like one week. my thoughts on city of brass: i listened to the audiobook earlier this year, and i also started out not feeling it: the characters felt like they were mainly just doing things because the author needed them to do/feel things to progress certain plot points, yet the start of the book also felt like it severely lacked a proper plot. however, towards the later half of the book you really get a larger sense of the politics and every character's role in those politics which i found very interesting. i think this book really succeeds at creating an interesting and nuanced political landscape, which also made the world building feel a lot more convincing. i've since read book 2 as well and none of the political conflict has felt easy to solve or black and white to me, which i think is the main charm of these books. i do however still feel like the characters are mostly developed surrounding "achieving plot points" rather than them having their own personality drive their decisions, which is resulting into me not really caring much about the characters. it frustrates me a bit, because i feel like the characters in these books hold so much potential (they all have their interesting backgrounds and different world views/experiences), but then the book forces them to act naïve to allow a plot point to develop a certain way, or they suddenly act more emotional than i would believe from them, simply to ramp up the tension, and it's been making me feel disconnected from the characters so my overal opinion: the politics get very interesting (which adds a lot to overal world-building) and this is enough reason for me to want to continue with the series, but the series definitely has consistent flaws when it comes to the characters, and that's something you might not care to stick around for.

Regarding The City of Brass: what got me hooked in the first book was not the plot or the characters but the setting. I'm studying to be a mediaeval historian and the middle/west Asian setting of the book is something i have been studying for years. So to read a fantasy set in a world so different from other fantasies I've read and yet so familiar was amazing. Later on in the series, i got really caught up in the intricate politics of this world and the role each character plays in it. Ali became one of my favourite characters. So I would really suggest sticking with it till the second book at least.

A delightful video, Emma, and full of cosy happy comfort! I have a special delight for your spring videos; the sunshine and nature and the way you capture things always put a smile on my face! I hope your summer semester goes well. It's so wonderful you got to spend time with your besties too, just having a fun day - so worth it! So ironically, I actually picked up The City of Brass today and it's been ages since I've read a lighter fantasy (after all the heavy lit reading for my thesis) and so far I'm loving it, and I just started Ali's perspective and I'm intrigued (about 60 pages in). I know what you mean about the info dump - it is not particularly elegant or sophisticated writing, and definitely reads like YA, but I love the setting (as an Egyptian girl myself, there is a certain delight in encountering historical representation of my culture within the fantasy genre). I selfishly hope you don't DNF it - just a thought, but maybe the audiobook is not doing the book the greatest service? :D.

Great vlog as always 💖 So, about "The City of Brass", I've read the first book and was like: okay, it's good but nothing special. But then I've read the second book and this series became one of the best fantasy series I've read recently! In the second book there is a lot of political intrigue and I love that the characters aren't simple. They are complex characters and you can't just classify them as good or bad persons. The second book is longer but I've read it very fast. It's very engaging. In the series there is a lot of plot twists and the atmosphere of this world is amazing. Maybe you will like the second book more, same as me 😊 I can't wait to read the third book! But it must wait till the end of my term.

It would be a great topic for a video as I am sure a lot of readers also knit! I know that I have struggled with it over the years. I love all of the plants in your apartment! I would love to have more literally hanging around. I have been considering putting bookshelves high up near the ceiling down my hall to have more space to put books. In my living room I keep a full sized day bed which fits a large container underneath which will work for storing books. Plus there is more room for another large container. I love seeing my books but my living room has a lot of stuff in it now. Got to do what I can for storage.

I have struggled with emetaphobia my whole life and have some traumas (like anyone) but I do not have PTSD. My girlfriend has PTSD and this book is just clarifying so much for the two of us. I thought it would be more general than it is but it truly seems to be focusing on PTSD as a disorder and not trauma as a general thing, which I am now learning are two very different things. I actually picked up the book when you said you were going to start soon so we are kinding of reading it together apart lol. I wish you lots of warmth while you read it.
