The problem with indie shows is not that the games can't be good, in fact there are often games that are very good shown at these events but we only really know what the good ones are in retrospective the trailers are usually kind of not great and they often make the games seem more boring than they actually are

Tribeca was alright, in 2021 we got Signalis, Twelve Minutes, Kena, and Lost in Random. I like indie showcases but it's almost entirely around the niche ones like EEK3 because every game has a demo available, someone makes a 'digital horror convention' you can play through... and a handful of those games might not actually come out ever lol

Let's also not forget that Blizzard were the first company to have a game that had both a box price, a subscription and an in-game shop with WoW, hell they pioneered paid services like server transfers and name changes - all of this they have been heavily criticised for since paid services became a thing in TBC (if I remember correctly) same with the shop in cata (which probably existed outside of the game already in wotlk, in-game shop came later though).

Its likely the money grubbing part of the industry is heading towards a crash as they approach the collective attention span limit. As straightforward good games become a rarity, the market for them will become more clearly defined.

Diablo 4's cinematics excellent as usual, sound design and voice acting excellent, graphically looks great and I love how gory they made things this time around. As for the story and main campaign it was okay so far, had some ? moments but overall I enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of the endgame loop it just feels whatever... seasonal content might fix this so I guess we'll see.

There will be no hype around this iteration of Cyberpunk, ever. People who already own the base game may bother with the DLC, and some may buy a bundle from a proper sale someday in the future. Before launch it was the next big thing, after launch it became just another poorly executed AAA release among many. And as such it will stay, regardless of the amount of bandaids.

I used to like Ubisoft games. Like I enjoyed the assassin's creed games up until like black flag and I kind of still fucked with unity even though it was broken, but I have zero interest now, it's insane. Same with far cry, I enjoyed far cry 4 and then lost all interest

-To add to Cohh's 'Asheron's Call' explanation, I think it's worth adding that during the beta phase someone posted online the exact recipes to every spell, utterly negating the incentivizing system the developers had made to keep it all secret. I think that this, along with lessons from Ultima Online, taught future developers that some gamers have far more interest in publicizing game info than in maintaining any secret.

49:00 Hitbox is not banned in competition. What is banned was the old SOCD (Simultaneous Opposing Cardinal Directions) firmware that turned down + up into up. For a long time games were really bad about implementing SOCD into the game logic so Hitbox could do things like walking Sonic Booms or block both directions at once because the game just interpreted both left and right as legitimate actions. Hitbox decided to handle the logic themselves. Now Street Fighter 6 actually does handle SOCD correctly and doesn't want players having different SOCD inputs depending on hardware, so they made a rule change standardizing it.

I think Zeke has a point about the hobby model and Diablo 4's monetization, but I think there's an important distinction to make between the 'traditional' buy and play model or a basic subscription model: gaming used to be the hobby, as in, the games you play all together. These live service monetization models are making an individual game the hobby. If they're big and long lasting enough, maybe there's some merit to that, but I do think it's a fundamental shift that we've seen and that is definitely here to stay.
