Seeing your son whine about having to finish his chore was so nice. I know it sounds strange, but sometimes I feel like I’m doing something wrong when my daughter does that because people tend to hide that part of family life. So thanks for including that.

I have a plot neighbor at my community plot who told me once "plants don't dig holes for their seeds, they just drop them" and dang it if that hasn't rung in my brain every time I sow a seed. I actually think about nature and embracing that. She's a 90 year old mandarian woman who is so so wise.

Furminators are AMAZING!!!!! I bought one for my husky girl. Worth every penny. I have a friend who is a cosmetologist, and before she moved, I would take a bag with me every time I went there, and I would empty her hair bin into the bag. I used it to keep the deer away from my baby fruit trees. It worked!

The dog hair trick TOTALLY works! We built a little garden on the front of a house we were renting because it was about all we could do. No fence and loads of rabbits and squirrels in the area. They kept coming and either eating the plants or digging holes in these little beds. I brushed my dog and worked the hair into the soil, especially around all of the edges and we didn't have any more trouble, even the neighbors cat stopped using it as a litter box!! Bonus!! 😄

I just have to say a huge thank you to Jess, I always failed at growing food when I was a young person. I never wanted to try again. I watched her grow lettuce in a bag of soil and thought I could try that method and grow radishes. Well, I failed, they grew but never bulbed up. Did I quit? NO!!! I tried again, with actual lettuce and it grew all fall and over winter (in my laundry room when it got too cold), we had enough to put on sandwiches and tacos. This spring, I put in 16x4 foot bed, I am growing herbs, onions, radishes, and transplanted my happy little lettuce plants and they are all doing so well, I planted in the garden almost 3 weeks before my last frost date (I am in zone 7B too) and when we had a few cold nights, I went on line and figured out how to protect my precious garden and they all pulled through. I am having so much fun, I am not afraid to fail in the garden any more. I had one little onion start peter out so I pulled it and put in a new little onion start, not a failure, just a little bump in the road, my Cilantro didn't come up, I put in a few more seeds, we shall see what happens. I just measured out were I will put my next beds in, I am super excited. Who knew this was so much fun, oh, I guess all of you did, but now I do too. Grow on fellow gardeners.

My aunt had a collie (looked like a fat lassie lol) it was so laid back that it would nap in the garden and let birds take the fur clumps off her! She also let chicks crawl all over her too. You'd go out and she would wag tail but not get up. She would have several chicks snuggled up to her to stay warm. I still miss that big old dog.

I’m 51 years old and I remember, when I was a child, we still had seasonal fruits and vegetables. If you wanted watermelon, you had it in July. Apples were a fall fruit. Zucchini and tomatoes were Summer foods. I kind of miss that. I definitely miss my Granny’s vegetable garden and the soup she made from it. I, also, let my dog hair fly. If there is a lot at once (she has two coats as well) I put it and/or dryer lint in a suet cake holder and hang it in the carport. It stays dry and my birds love it! 💜 I am trying a container garden this year, I’m so excited! Thanks for sharing!

aww Jess, and to all of you guys out there: you have inspired me to learn to garden. I have been watching Roots&Refuge for about 2 or 3 years now and when I started watching all I had was a couple cactus plants I had managed to keep alive for more than a year, lol. Now yesterday, I harvested carrots for the first time ever, I grew reg carrots and some Cosmic purple carrots from baker creek that I ordered. I have learned how to grow the most delicious tomatoes and greens and peas, now I'm learning about herbs and medicines. At first it was far fetched but now it doesnt seem so scary to me. So, in short, I agree Jess, all we have to do is just try. Its a huge inspiration to me to learn about the way it was done back in the day! It's simple, and we lack that sort of flavor in todays age.. All my love to you guys,

We had frost 5 weeks after our last frost date this year. A lot falls through the cracks here. I "fail forward" a lot, but a lot of successes comes through too. I love that freedom. I'm thankful for that freedom because we never know when we may not have that. Some places and people don't have that freedom and need to feed their family. I'm very grateful I'm in a place that I have the time and grace for space to learn. You encourage me so much. We were encouraged to try during the lockdown. Our 8x10 foot deck has an herb wall, three green bean towers, two tubs of carrots, three tubs of ginger, lemongrass, tumeric, a beet tub, a radish tub and a patio tomato. I get a full salad several times a week and enough greens for morning juice smoothies! I had not tried any of those things on my deck until last year. Watering is a little tricky 😊. I forgot the two elephant ears (edible roots) and cana lilies (edible tubers and flowers).

I couldn't resist putting a 4 thing of red bell pepper plants along with yellow bell peppers, green bell peppers and jalapenos. I got a few other things as well. When I went to pay I told the lady I'd been watching a KZbin gardening site for at least a year and then asked her "Is it too early to plant pepper plants?" You trained us well Jess! She said yes, it was too early, the low temperatures should be 50 and above before you plant peppers in the garden or pots or whatever. I put the pepper plants back. But I knew enough to ask the question😀 Thank you Jess!!!

I so love your pep talks Jess. It reminds me of the stories I have heard about the great depression and how the people who fared best were the farmers. Yes, the dust bowl areas not so much but people who were able to keep growing food could feed their families. My husband's grandfather was killed in a workplace accident and his wife was left with a bunch of kids to raise on her own. How did she feed them - a huge backyard garden - she grew up growing food so it wasn't something new to her but it was essential in order to feed her kids. And also during the two world wars - same thing. The people who grew food not only fed their families but also the larger community. Taking care of each other - food is love. I do a lot of hand watering in my garden - what I like about it is that I use that opportunity to do some serious bonding with my plants - and take a good look at how they are doing and ways in which I can help them. Thanks again for all that you and Miah do.

Miah is so funny. Wise words. Wise man! 😁 Yes!! I cut my hubs hair and sprinkle his hair on my strawberry bushes to keep critters away. Works great! And the birds definitely appreciate the hair for nests.Bear dog is sooo handsome! 💜 I love your rebel ways. I like too, that stumbling across your channel all those many months ago, IG night Ed my hearts fire for gardening. Ve learned so much in just 2 short years! I’ve become better, and a more knowledgeable gardener. And one who actually does the things I plan. It’s like you gave me permission to try again! I was a black thumb for years! I’ve even killed cactuses!! But with your tutorials and vlogs, you’ve taught me so much!! 💜

The fact that you talk about your failures as well as your successes is great because it is a fact of gardening. Not everything works for everyone all the time. All gardeners have occasional failures and every year is like a new experiment because temperatures and rain amounts vary. I used your tip about the saliva for stuck seeds and this morning I was able to remove the 3 that were stuck on my tomatoes. Thank you!

I grew up in my Grandmothers Garden and my Mothers Garden, I can't live without a garden, The garden is in my blood, so much has been lost it is nice to have you cheering others on. I have never thought of garden failure, just a missed calculation in growing. Bless you and your family.

Mmmm I needed that reminder. Sometimes we get in our own way because we're afraid of failure or not doing things right to the experts, but sometimes we just gotta see for ourselves what we can do by trying. Thanks for that, Jess :)

Thank you so much for your pep talk! :) Last year was my first garden! My dad had gardens when I was a kid and we loved that time together and my mom was the queen of canning! Last year, my son and I grew gardens and competed for who grew the most edible food in pounds. But this is what the best part was: it built our relationship even though he is 7 hours away. He recently told me that he didn't think I would be able to grow anything because I had even killed cacti in the past! Secondly, I was able to feed my family, some neighbors, and even can tomatoes and salsa for us to use in the winter! I could not wait to see what sprouted every morning! This year, we are at it again and my husband and I just built two more makeshift garden boxes which will work perfectly in our small garden. Thank you so much for your talks! I look forward to your VLOG each day.

Y’all stay safe today. Having our “tornado safe spot” ready helps give me peace of mind, but I always worry about my garden, too, on days like today. I have to remind myself that these plants have been around way longer than I have, and surrender my worries to nature to allow the peace to replace it.

My Pappy and Grandma had more than half their yard in a garden. They both worked on it together and canned a lot: beets, green beans, corn, and more. They also had a grape vine and had the most wonderful canned grape juice. When my dad was a kid in the 50's they also had chickens. This was on Second St in a small town, not way out in the country. My Pappy was also a fantastic Baker, making his own bread and recently my son has started doing the same; I think he has inherited the skill from my Pappy.

Just try...love it! I see garden groups where people are told everything not to do rather than just try it. Although the advice is meant in the best intentions, I find that sometimes just trying and seeing a little bit of success is all one truely needs. To firstly keep going and keep growing, but also to know from first hand experience that every garden is different and to adapt to your own garden not someone elses.🥰 loving the words of wisdom Jess!

Thank you so much Jess for endorsing freedom from failure! I planted out some early brassicas for my zone and yes, most died. But one didn't!! And they were all extra seedlings just waiting for a little lesson in my "backyard classroom". I loved the time spent in the dirt and the freedom to fail forward ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so much for all your positive messages. I'm about to start a new garden for the first time in 15 years. My sister already shot down the idea saying it's not worth it. Too much effort , not financially viable etc. I told her its definitely worth a try. I've been surrounded by so much negative attitude my whole life which doesn't help. Watching this channel is kind of like 'watering' the growing gardener 😆

Totally agree about the furmenator brush! We rescued a White German Shepherd and I never realized all the hair a German Shepherd has, lol good thing she’s such a good dog! I had heard to place hair in hose or vented type bag and tie around your garden to leave the scent to scare off deer or other unwanted animals. Not a garden tip but I highly recommend a Roomba for the house to help keep the hair in check. Thanks for all your teaching. I think you have your next T-Shirt - “Just try”. With a garden growing up all around it! 🌼

Wow! Double coated... we had a Great Pyrenees/ German shepherd mix... I’ve never seen so much hair on a dog. She would get so hot in the summer we finally started having her shaved to help cool her down. She was the best dog 🐕 one day she just disappeared, just like she came... no idea where she came from but thankful for the time we had with her. Miss you Lucy girl 😢

I love the statement "Just try". I think outside the box and love to "Just try" things sometimes for self satisfaction of knowing for myself if it will work. Then I tweak it and try again if it didn't but i think that is how i learn the most sometimes. Thanks for being so inspiring and encouraging ❤
