Rather than becoming mainstream, I would rather people just didn't care. Here in France (I'm English), it's seen as rude to ask about or openly display your religion because religion is seen as something personal and no one else's business.

@AmandaJuneHagarty2 ай бұрын
I initiated myself as a solitary Witch in the mid 1980s when I was 15. From my perspective, Witchcraft has become more mainstream. And that hasn't diminished it, only changed the way people practice and especially young and new Witches. When something becomes really mainstream it becomes codified, and that is when something turns into religion. But I don't see that ever happening for witchcraft. When I first noticed Witchcraft getting more popular online I had a slight reaction, as if someone was trying to change or redefine everything that I knew about my culture and my practice. It made me actually appreciate the concept of close practices more. But instead of feeling like witchcraft should be a close practice that the newbies couldn't change I realized that the fundamental essence of witchcraft is flexibility, fluidity, and tolerance. No matter how you define it, how you practice, that is the one thing that stays the same. And so I will be betraying my own craft to tell someone else that they shouldn't be changing things or that they are doing it "wrong". So I've kept myself open and I've learned some interesting things and had some interesting aha moments in my own brain because the truth is we never finish learning about witchcraft or what witchcraft could be to us.

I also think the upsurge is a reaction to the disillusionment in Abrahamic religions. Like most of us I guess. I’m an old lady so my strict Catholic Italian mother changed me at an early age. Maybe popular culture and social media is another influence for today’s practitioners. Whatever it takes. Like you I constantly strive for the truth, joy and connection with the divine, to see the unseen, nature of reality and never limit my self to one thought. I really hope we all evolve. Cause things gotta change. Bless
@th-ck9vlАй бұрын
I like the idea of something more concrete. I dislike cluster fuck spiritualities, and I know I'm pretty alone in that. I mean it does sound nice, everything fluid and open to change, but I want more roots, you know? I want to build something that will be around for ages with a clear name and a clear path. I don't think there's anything wrong with religion. I think people just got traumatized over how pushy abrahamic religions can be, but religion doesn't have to be pushy. I would enjoy at least one branch of witchcraft that has a solid foundation and way of doing things that I could learn, rather than floundering on the internet at all the contradictory shit I read. I want something like "This means this, this means that, this specific type of witchcraft is for people who believe xyz, and if you don't like that or believe this, this group is not for you." But I think even that would offend people. They'd call it a cult and many would want to come in just for the title and try to change it back into a big ol cluster fuck of "nothing means anything so everything means nothing." People love joining a group because they want the label for some reason and then realizing they don't agree with any of it. Then rather than leaving and finding something better, they instead try to tear it to shreds until that foundation is gone and it's unrecognizable. I crave routine and certainty, having something laid out that I can read and decide yes, this is for me or no it's not. Others crave flow and change and weaving different cultures into one. That's fine. But I dislike how rude witches are to people who want something different.

I belong to a group of women and we come together each month to shore up our power and to do what we refer to as community action. I have been a practitioner for over 40yrs. what we have found is there are several of young adult and teens that dabble in magic, they cast a circle, invite the energies but then just walk away and don't shut down a ritual correctly and not shut the doors they open and hence things come in and start to make trouble. My group will spend an entire day, just working on scoot these energies out of here and closing doors. We find that the news reports a rise and fall of these energies.

I love how you really do your research and always mention that everything is nuanced when it comes to historical events. A lot of practitioners I see online generalize certain things vastly, because it's easier and flashier to say "Christianity destroyed everything that had to do with nature" than actually going in depth and explaining how paganism and Christianity merged, how there were people burned but also people respected for their gifts with healing plants (also Christian monks doing a great amount of work towards modern medicine by having large herb gardens). You are one of the only witches online I don't feel the need to fact check everything because your statements always seem well rounded and backed up by science.

I was raised in a mixture of Catholicism and Evangelism, and have soooooo much religious trauma. I haven’t truly believed or considered myself a part of any of that for a very long time, but am only in the last few years actually deconstructing and trying to destroy the harmful things that were planted in my brain. I’ll always have OCD and PTSD as leftovers, but I’m finally getting rid of the existential FEAR of everything. I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while now even though I’m not any variation of a witch - you’re just so easy to listen to and are so knowledgeable. You’ve probably contributed to my journey on a subconscious level because you are so antithetical to what I grew up believing about witches. I’ve still got a lot of anger about religion (and can’t even discuss it because all my family still is in it hardcore) but I’m leaning into learning about the aspects of my Irish and German ancestry that were swept under the rug. I’m learning Irish and German, I’m dipping my toes into modern Druidry, learning some of both cultures folklore, and just trying to find out about where I came from historically now that I’m not terrified of accidentally inviting demons into my soul by asking questions lol. Sorry that was long, like I said I can’t talk about any of this in real life. But all that to say - thanks for doing what you do, and being such a cool person!

Many spanning across the globe are connected in someway. Most sharing same beliefs and practices just under different names. Most of my studies have been fairly easy. Until witchcraft. It is so diverse. I was surprised to see such a young woman so well informed. You have made this part of the journey alot easier to understand. I suffered a TBI many moons ago. And I agree 💯 and OMG, never blow cinnamon or pepper etc outside away from yourself. Not only are you sending it the wrong direction, but a gust of wind could come along and blow it in your eyes and nose! Regarding the witch hunts and trials...i watched a documentary on a woman who went to Germany to uncover what happened back then, because she had an ancestor who was killed for it. Apparently, middle aged widows and even younger ones were targeted because they'd had property left to them from their husband who died. Older women also often had skin tags and moles so that made it a witch's teat that demons and familiars would nurse from. Also targeted were herbalists and midwives. Apparently there was also a Swiss village that ended up with almost no women left because of this insanity. 😢

@ouroborosjormungandr5615. I was banging my head on my desktop when I heard that, Brother/Sister. 🤕I've met many Norse Pagans and/or Witches over the years, and none, so far, have ever referred to themself as atheist. (I used to be part of an Asatru group in the West Midlands, England.)
@citrinedragonfly2 ай бұрын
I was puzzled by that assertion, too. My wife identifies as Heathen, while I identify as Wiccan - both of us are solitary practitioners. Her books don't mention atheist as a Norse word. Far as I know, it's based on Greek - theos for god, and the a for none/not - so no gods. My brother is an atheist, and that's the definition he uses - no belief in gods or afterlife.

Well I had just finished watching the documentary referenced here when right afterward, your review popped up. Perfect timing. Your reactions were precisely mine. Starting with the cinnamon spell and throughout. But I especially want to react to your comment at the 49-50 minute mark. Totally agree with your term "watered down". To make it "acceptable" to the masses would indeed mean a watering down. In doing that, it would lose a part of the mysterious magickal side and I feel this is part of the power or energy with the Craft. It is not for everyone and I feel it should not be marketed for the masses. It is called occult for a reason. And this mystery is a trait that greatly attracts me. Your are wonderful and I am never disappointed with the content you put out. Thank you for who and what you are. John Paul

I love this! Thank you for covering this and the differing perspectives. I agree with you on the whole. I myself am an eclectic witch and came into my witchy-ness late in life. It was one of those things where I knew I was different but didn't know why or what it could be until my late 40's...better late than never. I did learn something today with the cinnamon. My take on this and what I learned years ago was to write my desire or wish on a piece of paper. I say my mantra or prayer, set intention, ignite the piece of paper on fire, placing into a fireproof offering bowl, then sprinkle with cinnamon to "charge" or boost my wish. Once the fire goes out and only the ash is left I take it to my front door and blow the cinnamon ash out my front door and release it to the universe. The cinnamon acts as the carrier of my wishes and/or desires out into the universe to work it's magick.

I personally enjoy more of the secrecy and mystery and the workings being about the individual seeking out the path more than the idea of it becoming mainstream. There is a tendency for standardizing what everything should be and this is not good. It should not be about what is trending at all. It is more sacred than that...as a matter of fact whatever you choose should be sacred and personal to you. This includes any path. It's okay to share (sometimes) but it should remain personal or shared as needed.

Once things go mainstream there isn't a lot of room left for improvement and pushing the boundries. Even in the chaos magic community there is a sense of dogma surrounding the early literature, especially of Peter Carroll and Phile Hine. Of course, we are still 'f***ing around and finding out,' but mainlining the underground always leads us astray and towards being watered down. Punk rock for example, but I won't get in to that here!

Excellent !! There is so much to digest in this weeks episode. I feel I will have to watch it at least 2 more times to absorb 1/2 of the information shared here. I found it to very informative and educational shedding some light on questions I have been asking myself for awhile now. You inspire many of us with your mannerism and clarity of the topics being discussed as you never speak that someone is wrong, just your points of view.

She read "blow the cinnamon FROM outside" so she's the one who didn't understand what she read and did it incorrectly. I havent watched your channel in a while (or any witchy channels because Ive discovered I can manifest by intention alone without the tools & rituals) and I gotta say you look great!!!

I 100% agree with the woman in a video who said it's time to start talking about something new, that the common stereotypes and questions are getting old and boring. We are almost 30 some odd years out from the big blow up of the 90s with Charmed and Practical Magic and Hocus pocus (not that those weren't great shows and movies!) and now I think documentaries should stop focusing on the same old boring information that's already been gone over a dozen times and start looking at the everyday life of a modern witch or the community work that witches are involved in, maybe follow along for the celebration of a sabbat other than Samhain! My hope for the future is that witchcraft stops being so capitalized. "Buy this course!" "Pay this amount each month to join our online coven". Bleh. I would love to see a bigger community web, whether it be a newspaper or newsletter, some way to network and find people and join groups/covens, learn from one another instead of paying for it like college tuition.

I realized I was a witch during the 2020 pandemic, and my practice has continued to evolve as I learn more. In a life filled with internal chaos of the mind, it has been an empowering experience that I will always follow.

Any other norse pagans/heathens/asatru as confused as I am about the elder saying we call ourselves atheists?? Been practing norse traditions for 10+ years and NEVER heard that before!

Last year, I finally claimed the label of “witch”-in my mind, someone who is in touch with my surroundings, with myself, and confident in my power and self-worth. It was a few months after that, that I felt Brigid tap me on the shoulder, and heard like the old Verizon Wireless commercials: “Can you hear me now? CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?!” All I could do was laugh and apologize. I didn’t know anything about her until I was reading about the Irish pantheon.

Words create, one of the things I do with energy is when I go into town and need a car park, I sit in my car and ask spirit to have a space available for me to park my car at a specific place and there is always a space there. As a witch for me it is all about energy and I live by the creed of, 'and harm thee none'. I love using energy for good and yes I have lots of crystals and using the craft is what it is all about.

I had one funny dialogue with a Christian. Him: So, you're a witch. You worship devil? Me: I don't even believe in one. Him: But you still do animal sacrifices? Me: I'm actually vegan. And no, I do no harm to animals. Him: So you just curse people and stuff? Me: No, I don't. I do herbal remedies to help. The guy still said I'm gonna burn in hell for witchcraft. Not sure if this dialogue is funny or sad😂

Intrigued by the person who said you can be a Christian and be a witch. Think that is a topic worth diving more into as I also believe many who identify as Christians may or may not realize that they are also practicing witchcraft. There are a lot of overlap between the two in the modern world.

Thank you for saying “actually some do work with the devil/demons” and “actually some do curse”. I remember being a baby witch and hearing people say that witches don’t worship devil/don’t curse . Then along the way years later, discovering other witches that did do those things and being like “hey wait a minute.” I feel like if I’d known some do at the time, and mentioned it, those older witches would have thought I was the most intolerant bigot in the worrrllddddd. But truthfully, once you do come across witches who do those things, you’re generally far along enough in your witchcraft journey to understand why they’d say that to beginners.
