A Wolf and the Vet!
I get asked all the time if I bring Honey to the vet. The answer is yes. I'll probably never film a vet visit because she's not a big fan of the vets, and I need to make sure I'm fully present. She's had all her vaccinations except for the lepto vaccine. The reason being, in wolves and high content wolfdogs, the side effects from the vaccine are worse than the actual disease. Also, before getting a wolf or high content wolfdog, make sure you have a vet picked out that you've spoken to because most vets won't treat them. Also, be sure to ask if they'll give them vaccines because this might be a problem, too. 🐺 ❤️ 🐾

They sure are lol! I don't own wolves but I have studied about them a lot, in ways that I could. A lot of people think that wolves are these killing beasts and will just outright attack a human for no reason, but actually that's not true at all. And it's not true because wolves are so terrified of people that they will more than likely run away if they see or smell or hear you. Wolves only attack people if their brain was formed differently, if you're near the den, or if you're in their territory. Wolves even do this with other animals though. In the wild, wolves have a lot of enemies to worry about. As a lone, dispersal wolf(a wolf who left their birth pack to start their own pack) rival wolves are a big thing since whenever wolves disperse that's when they are finding a mate. Although, it's most prominent in Fall but some wolves will still disperse over the years if they haven't found a mate yet or if they are ready for it. Some wolves don't find mates in time to have puppies with, so that's usually what also happens. But whenever a pairing of two wolves have a litter of pups they have to worry about a lot of predators. Rival wolf packs, coyotes, and stray dogs see wolf pups as competition so they'll kill them to decrease enemies. And then male bears, golden eagles(or hawks, any bird of prey that hunts their own food excluding bald eagles), and cougars hunt wolf pups because they make a valuable snack for them. Because of this it causes wolves to be very weary of strangers.

I feel like I need to talk about Bravecto, too. I had heard bad things about it when it first came out. I even warned my daughter about it, but she forgot. She gave it to Jake, and it nearly killed him. He broke out in giant boils all over his body, and he could hardly move. It was super scary. We brought him back to the vets, and they said there was nothing they could do and the medication would have to run its course. I thank God he pulled through, but it took over a month before he was back to his usual self. I know some dogs do just fine with it, but that really put the fear of god into me.❤️ 🐾

All my dogs from the beginning of time have had the Lepto vaccine and never had a side effect so I’m not sure where this is coming from. But my sisters dog had heart worms from not having the lepto vaccine and to see what heart worm does to your dog is horrible. So what she said is a lie, they lose weight, the dog can be in a lot of pain, I watched my sisters dog go insane from the medication they have to give the dog for heart worm, literally it tried to bite her so she had to put it down, because of the meds for heart worm. So please do not tell people the Lepto vaccine is worse then the Heart Worm the dog gets because again I’ve seen what happens first hand !!

@@BabyGirlRaven That is so incredibly sad, I'm really sorry it happened. I'm from Poland and the lepto vaccine isn't required nor recommended by the vets there. In fact I only found out about it once I started preparing my pup to move abroad with me and reading all the travelling rules and regulations before getting his passport. My guess is maybe @bobandthewolfdogs was talking about how lepto vaccine affects wolfdogs, not dogs in general.

If your dogs are anything like mine, they love all the smells in the parking lot. They love the waiting room, but once they get back to that little room and are closed in, the panic starts. I've never experienced an animal like Honey at the vets. It takes the vet, the assistant, Bob the human, and myself to hold her down just so he can listen to her heart. I think it traumatizes me, too. I don't like doing that to her, but we still do her regular checkups. ❤️ 🐾

Advice for the future would be to make periodic visits without it actually being a visit to be poked. Lets an animal know every visit isnt for treatment.

Thank you, and that's great advice! 😃 I did do a little of that, but not as much as I should have. I should have been doing it weekly, especially when she was younger. But there's no time like the present to try again. 😃 The vets are great and give out lots of treats. She'll gobble them up when I bring her along when Jake and Bob are seen, but if she's being seen, she refuses to take them. ❤️ 🐾

Our dog was too smart for that. The vet's place was on his walkies route, so we'd stop in when they were open and weigh him on their scale in the waiting room. He'd reluctantly go in, stand on the scale for a millisecond and bail. If anybody stayed any longer, like to just chat up the receptionist, he'd make it known that he didn't want to be here.

Okay, almost expected to hear that no, Honey doesn’t go to the vet as she eats the vets for poking her with a needle. 😂 I never thought about vets turning away wolf dogs. That’s damn sad to hear. Glad to hear that you have got one for her! 👍🎉❤ I imagine that it’s hard to keep har healthy given her proclivities concerning kitchen cupboards and the frig. Having chocolate in the house must be something of a rare thing. She’s a rascal as we’ve seen in past videos! 😂❤

If I'd let her, I think she just might, lol. 😃 He's a really nice guy, too. I worry most about rats. Any that dare enter our property are goners. Last month, she had a 3-inch gash on her front leg. I had no idea why, she came in with it. I cleaned it and put antibacterial ointment on it and went out back to see what could have caused it. Low and behold, there was a dead rat. He must have given her a big fight. All I could think was no! We're gonna have to go to the vet. Thank God I washed it out in time. I'm still checking it daily for infection. ❤️ 🐾

She's a smart wolf, to me. Many procedures veterinarians do are harmful & unnecessary. Sharing a different perspective: my personal observation is that the best animal breeders & veterinarians I've met have completely let go of *all* vaccines & the entire vaccine paradigm itself. Total respect for everyone's different practices here, just sharing that there are many animal professionals who have a completely different view & practice. I truly feel confident that the whole vaccine paradigm will be let go *eventually* by all mainstream doctors/veterinarians/medical industries - as more and more awareness is raised. Medical sciences often let go of practices when they upgrade their knowledge base... the concepts/views/practices of "diseases" are completely changing under the hood while we may be seeing the peak climax end of the immunization/vaccine world view and paradigm. I think its important to reach out to vets/breeders that have a different perspective on this. Always learning. ❤

We had a tough time finding a vet that would take a wolfdog....but we did find a local animal hospital that would and they are even much less expensive than a vet. They also do boarding, which Kota hates...but because she doesn't bark, she never comes home with kennel cough... :)

Bob's 100% dog, all malamute. 😃 Jake is 40% Mckenzie Valley Wolf or a low content wolfdog. And Honey's an F-1 high content hybrid. She's got 7% German shepherd in her, but the rest is gray-wolf. That 7% is what allows me to legally have her but makes next to zero difference behaviorally. She's a full-time job. She's a little mischievous, passionate girl that loves to cause drama. I think she might thrive on it. ❤️ 🐾

I can understand Honey not liking to be touched by strangers. Wolves are leery of humans and will avoid them in the wild. People have the misconception that wolves are blood-thirsty killing machines. Folklore and nursery rhymes haven’t helped their image. They are apex predators and vital for a healthy ecosystem. Besides, how could anyone look at Honey’s beautiful face and be frightened? Hugs to Honey and Bob from Tennessee? Btw, I’m glad you found a vet that will treat Honey. Many years ago I found a fox that had been hit by a car. My Mom and I took her to our vet, but they refused to treat it. We took her to the University of Tennessee Veterinary Clinic. Unfortunately she didn’t survive. 🥲

I can soo relate to that! I had to be 100% present at the vet with my dog too. He hated it soo much and whatever I could administer at home I did. The vet showed me exactly how to do it and at home done by me, it was easy, he let it happen patiently but even the vet building Rex wouldn‘t enter without hesitation, resistance.. So I fully understand that you won‘t film your vet visits with Honey!! You don‘t have to film everything anyway. That is your and your dogs‘ choice!!

Lol 😆 You know she has seen me inject myself. I decided to try a new weight loss drug called ozempic, and she'd watch me plunge the needle in once a week for about 6 weeks. I developed an allergic reaction to it just last week. I look like I've got the chickenpox. I was so worried everyone would see the awful rash on my hands on my last video when I was booping Honey and Bob. But it would have been interesting to have the vet inject me and then inject Honey. ❤️ 🐾

Did you try to take her to the vet, just to say hello, get some treats n cuddles and then go home? Like once in a week, at the beginning? It does take some effort but it can make the difference between nerve wrecking and easy-peasy - *for you AND for her!* So after a while (maybe after you trained that with her at home in case she does not like it in general) the vet can start with visual and only slightly touching check-ups like eyes, later teeth, ears - then measuring the heartbeat, temperature and so on. Everything of course payed with treats and praising. And *always* end with a positive impression. Getting injections can be pretty easy: when you, or the vet alone, share cuddles which are getting a bit pinching. *Cos that is the moment: pinching here, injection there and then CUDDLES!* It is about being touched by "the one stranger" but also to understand it is not too bad doing all this stuff. Dogs are domesticated for about 15,000 years. They are bred to team up with humans. Wolves are wild. But I guess you know that better than me 😉 although your littly lady is pretty well adapting and behaving ❤ but still and fortunately a wolf 🤩

She's okay with just sitting there with the vet, but the minute he tries to touch her is when it goes wrong. Even just a wellness check with no shots freaks her out. The vet is a real, nice, calm energy man, too. We had another vet we used to bring her to. He had large exam rooms, and I think that made her more comfortable. She was good with him but unfortunately he passed away last year. But you're right. There's no time like the present to start bringing her and being more consistent with her. ❤️ 🐾

@@bobandthewolfdogs Oh yeah, the size of a room can have a huge impact on the stress level! But it is great and a big win that Honey seems to like the vet as a person 😊 Maybe you could bring a toy after a few "treat-sit-ins" - with no touching first, just Honey deciding to take the treats of the doctor's hands - which the vet can then throw, so that she starts to properly move around the room and acclimates to it's size. I am glad you like my suggestion and all fingers crossed that it will work out! 🤞💖 Feel free to keep me (the community) posted 😉

It's the leptospira vaccine. I was told by a breeder that wolves and high content wolfdogs have a bad reaction to it. I've also heard that breeders for other dogs have issues with it as well. In some cases, the side effects of the vaccine can be worse than the actual disease. I think it really depends on where you live and if leptospirosis is common or an epidemic in your area. It's something worth talking to your vet about. My vet was very understanding and agreed with me, but that could just be for Honey. Although we didn't give it to Jake either. One thing that wolves and wolfdogs have horrible reactions to is bravecto. It's an oral flea and tick medication. We unknowingly gave it to Jake and almost killed him. We're lucky and don't have ticks where I live, but we do have fleas. I have no idea what I'll do if they ever get them. ❤️ 🐾

There's a lot that won't. It's because these vaccines weren't tested on wolves or wolfdogs, and because of that, they believe they're not effective in them. You may find one that will do it on the side. Our vet was willing to do it. The rabies vaccine is in huge debate right now for wolfdogs. If a wolfdog bites a human, even if the wolfdog has been vaccinated, they'll put it down. Not because it bit someone but because they can't be sure it doesn't have rabies. It's pretty nuts, in my opinion. I've been reading all kinds of horror stories. ❤️ 🐾

I find it rediculous that so many vets refuse to vaccinate wolves and wolfdogs simply because they aren’t proven to be effective for them clinically, yet they'll admister vaccines that have high chances of severe side-effects to dogs without a second thought. In my opinion, all vaccinations should be available to purchase to administer yourself at your own discretion, particularly ones that are required like rabies. Too many vets nowadays don’t know what they're doing.

Rabies vaccine was formulated and data is based on dogs, not wolves. This is a huge reason why wolves are not good pets.

That's so sad that the side effects of a vaccine meant to prevent a disease that occurs in Canines actually be worse than the disease itself afflicting said Canines if they are highly genetically Wolves in their genetic make-up. I really hope that whatever this disease is that it's not very seveyabs has a high survivability rate amongst Canines who are mostly wolf like or Wolves themselves. And if not then I hope an improvement upon the vaccine or some other treatment is discovered and made soon. This is exactly why I want to be a Veterinarian Technician who specializes in Canines and Felines especially wild ones like wolves. These are living creatures who feel emotions and can feel pain and thus as the dominant species of this planet it is our duty and obligation to give them the care and loving support they need to help them. No matter what it takes us wherever it takes us. The thought of losing a single one when they can be saved is unbarable.
