The Queen (Judi Dench) saves Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) from arrest and Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow) from being outed as a woman.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) is on a cold streak. Not only is he writing for Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush), owner of "The Rose," a theatre whose doors are about to be closed by sadistic creditors, but he's got a nasty case of writer's block. Shakespeare hasn't written a hit in years. In fact, he hasn't written much of anything recently. Thus, the Bard finds himself in quite a bind when Henslowe, desperate to stave off another round of hot-coals-to-feet application, stakes The Rose's solvency on Shakespeare's new comedy, "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter." The problem is, "Romeo" is safely "locked away" in Shakespeare's head, which is to say that not a word of it is written. Meanwhile, the lovely Lady Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow) is an ardent theatre-goer -- scandalous for a woman of her breeding -- who especially admires Shakespeare's plays and, not incidentally, Bill himself. Alas, she's about to be sold as property into a loveless marriage by her mercenary father and shipped off to a Virginia tobacco plantation. But not before dressing up as a young man and winning the part of Romeo in the embryonic play. Shakespeare soon discovers the deception and goes along with it, using the blossoming love affair to ignite his muse. As William and Viola's romance grows in intensity and spirals towards its inevitable culmination, so, too, does the farcical comedy about Romeo and pirates transform into the timeless tragedy that is Romeo and Juliet.

Oh, man. The way she delivers those lines at 1:49 always makes me reflect. Deep resolve, profound pride, a bit of regret, and an unrelenting burden are all there at once! Brilliant. For a brief moment, it makes me imagine that I could understand the depths of Queen Elizabeth I's challenges. Stellar acting. One of my favorites moments in film.

0:53 - It is a testament to what an epic actress Judi Dench is the magnificent elegance with which she made her appearance. Every head bowed and every knee bent when they realized the Queen herself was there. She looked every square inch the dignified grace and authority of Elizabeth herself and commanded the poise and presence of that legendary English monarch masterfully. Say what you will. Judi Dench WAS Queen Elizabeth I in this performance. Brilliantly done!

He never wanted his daughter, Elizabeth, to become queen. Henri VIII thought that only a strong King would keep his kingdom together. Little he knew that Elizabeth would become the greatest English monarch.

He was studious, engaged in political theory from a young age, and he was pious, but not to a fault.. He was a kind and generous person, and had a loving relationship with his family, especially his much older sisters.. No guarantees, of course, but it would be interesting if history changed and he lived to sit on the throne..

Leland Wood A lot of people talk about how beautiful Cate Blanchett was as Elizabeth I (and she certainly was and nonetheless made a great performance). But at the same time, Judi Dench as Elizabeth I in general was a bit more accurate than Blanchett's portrayal.

some have complained that Judi Dench should not have gotten the Best Supporting Oscar that year because she was in the film for under 10 minutes (I think). I say that her delivery of those two lines deserved the award. She conveyed the entire history of Elizabeth's life and reign up to that point in those few words. Amazing.

Judy Dench is drenched in glory and greatness in this scene, majestic as this scene is and amazingly wonderful and hauntingly accurate as her performance in this scene was, as she NAILED IT PERFECTLY, BEAUTIFULLY AND SEAMLESSLY. In hindsight, we all know why Gwyneth won the Oscar. With all due respect to her performance here, which is very decent by any standard, her win at the Oscars was almost certainly politically engineered. Cate Blanchett is one of the most prolific and talented actresses of all time, and certainly the best of her generation. If she had won, which she should have in terms of artistic quality, the same character, Queen Elizabeth I, would have been portrayed in two Oscar-winning performances in the same year, which would have been quite remarkable (Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro won Oscars for their portrayal of Vito Corleone in two different editions). But, as Cate once famously said to Charlie Rose, this defeat and frustration propelled her to keep going and seek to improve herself, since success and complacency only cause stagnation, but in her case her persistence in trying to avenge herself of this unmerited defeat led to her subsequent magnificent performances (of which there have been many indeed) which made her into the phenomenal actress that she is today. If necessity is the father of success, failure must be its mother.
